Background: This study investigated the extent of traditional knowledge and use of homemade herbal remedies for livestock by farmers in 3 Swiss cantons (Aargau, Zurich, Schaffhausen). The study focused on organic farms. Methods: At 21 farms, 24 farmers aged 36–83 years were interviewed with a semi-structured, detailed questionnaire. For each homemade herbal remedy, the plant species, mode of preparation, source of knowledge, and application were gathered. Satisfaction of the farmers with the application was estimated with the aid of a visual analogue scale. Results: Information on a total of 165 homemade remedies was collected of which 123 contained a single plant species only (homemade mono-species herbal remedies, HMHR). The 123 HMHR were selected for... |

On 25 Swiss and German organic dairy farms all fresh cows (a total of 283 cows between 5 and 50 days in milk) were tested weekly for blood- -hydroxybutyrate (BBHB), 121 exceeded the threshold of 1.0 mmol/l BBHB. A total of 84 cows were randomly assigned to three treatments which were given daily, diluted in 700ml fluid divided to two oral administrations for 4 days: placebo (PL), 240g sodium propionate per day (SP) and 240g sodium propionate combined with an extract of seven herbs (27g drug equivalent). Milk acetone (MAC) and BBHB were observed during the administration period and thereafter, in total for two weeks. A reduction of ketone bodies was measured in all three treatment groups. No significant differences between SP and PL arose regarding the... |

A randomized placebo controlled trial investigates an herbal mixture containing mainly Urtica dioica L. (herba), Trigonella foenum-greacum L. (semen), Silybum marianum (L.) Gaert. (fructus) and Achillea millefolium L. (herba). The herbal mixture was fed daily (50g per cow) about 60d from dry off to calving date. 63 dairy cows (32 in the herb-(h)- and 31 in the placebo-(p)-group) of one organic farm were included in the study. Cows were differentiated depending on their lactation number: 19 first lactating cows (L1; h: n=10, p: n=9), 23 cows of second to fourth lactation (L2-4; h: n=11, p: n=12) and 21 cows with more than four lactations (L>4; h: n=11, p: n=10). The herbal group showed the following significant differences (p<0.05) compared to... |

A reduction of medicine use (udder treatments, metabolic treatments and total number of treatments) in organic dairy herds was achieved within a time period of one year under different conditions across seven European countries. At the same time an improvement of udder health (SCS) and a stable situation in other health areas (metabolic disorders, fertility) was found, however regardless of the focus area in the AHWP. The AHWP process which was implemented on the farms may therefore be regarded a feasible approach to minimise medicine use without impairment of health, longevity and productivity under most European organic dairy farming conditions. However, further long-term studies are necessary to investigate effects of specific advice included in herd... |

Background: Very few ethnoveterinary surveys have been conducted in central Europe. However, traditional knowledge on the use of medicinal plants might be an option for future concepts in treatment of livestock diseases. Therefore the aim of this study was to document and analyse the traditional knowledge and use of homemade herbal remedies for livestock by farmers in four Swiss cantons. Methods: Research was conducted in 2012. Fifty farmers on 38 farms were interviewed with the aid of semistructured interviews. Detailed information about the plants used and their mode of preparation were documented as well as dosage, route of administration, category of use, origin of knowledge, frequency of use, and satisfaction with the treatment. Results: In... |
