EMPIRICAL TAXONOMY OF ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICAL ARCHETYPES AgEcon
Grimsrud, Kristine M.; Wandschneider, Philip R..
Economists usually assume that the private ethical system of individuals is Utilitarian. However, one finds a much broader range of ethical positions in the environmental ethics literature. Moreover, environmental policy debates seem to elicit alternative ethical systems. It would therefore seem prudent to increase our understanding of the role played by alternative environmental ethical systems. In this study we follow some descriptive ethical studies in examining the empirical ethical position of people based on a broad cross section of the American public. We review some taxonomic literature in environmental ethics and develop a conceptual model of the formation of environmental values. We then use canonical correlation to investigate the existence of...

Perceived Water Prices and Estimated Water Demand in the Residential Sector of Windhoek, Namibia. An Analysis of the Different Water Market Segments AgEcon
Kavezeri-Karuaihe, Selma T.; Wandschneider, Philip R.; Yoder, Jonathan K..
We develop a demand model for the water market of Windhoek, Namibia, and segment the market by income. The model uses the perceived price concept developed by Shin (1985). Results confirm the Shin hypotheses that consumers don’t know actual prices, but respond to perceived prices. The average price and covariates have the expected signs. However, marginal price (MP) coefficient is positive. Shin’s perception parameter (k) is negative in two of three income segments. In the Shin model, this implies that consumers respond to MP (through perceived prices). Ambiguities about prices warrant further investigation.

Valuing Attributes of Fluid Milk Using Choice-Based Conjoint Experimental Design AgEcon
Bai, Junfei; Wahl, Thomas I.; Wandschneider, Philip R..
A choice-based conjoint (CBC) experiment was employed to analyze Chinese consumers’ preferences for fluid milk defined by four choice attributes: production processing method, fat content level, taste, and price. The results from two analysis approaches (counting and multinomial logit models) indicated that Chinese consumers are willing to pay a premium for pasteurized, low fat content, and natural tasting milk, but that they require a discount for choosing ultra high temperature (UHT), high fat content, and flavored milk. In addition, this study estimated the trade-offs among attributes’ levels and simulated the effects of income on the probabilities of choosing attribute-specified milk.

U.S. Grass-Fed Beef: Marketing Health Benefits AgEcon
McCluskey, Jill J.; Wahl, Thomas I.; Li, Quan; Wandschneider, Philip R..
Grass-fed beef is a product with health benefits that may appeal to health-conscious consumers. This article analyzes the results of a choice experiment to explore the importance of health benefits in the marketing of grass fed beef. Both price and fat and calories have a negative effect on the choice of the product, and higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids have a positive effect. Price is the most important attribute to respondents (39.5%), a low level of fat and calories is the second most important attribute (36.9%), and the level of omega-3 fatty acids is the least important of these factors (23.6%).

INVESTING IN FARM WORKER HOUSING: A MULTI-SEASON PEAK-LOAD ANALYSIS OF WASHINGTON STATE DATA AgEcon
Qenani-Petrela, Eivis; Wandschneider, Philip R.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; McCluskey, Jill J..
This paper develops cost effective investment rules for farm worker housing and applies the model to farm worker housing in the state of Washington. The state must meet varying seasonal farm worker housing needs at minimum expense. In this study we examine investment rules to choose among different housing technologies in order to minimize the total costs of housing consistent with achieving welfare goals. The research extends existing peak-load models to the multi-season planning cycle case and applies the approach empirically to a new subject area.

Permanent Housing for Seasonal Workers? A Generalized Peak Load Investment Model for Farm Worker Housing AgEcon
Qenani-Petrela, Eivis; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Wandschneider, Philip R..
Many seasonal workers are housed in transitory accommodations, including tents and vehicles. In this study, we analyze the supply side of this problem by assuming that a public agent must house the workers through direct public investment. A peak load model is adapted to develop investment rules for the least-cost provision of seasonal worker housing, adding an interacting multi-season component to existing models. Based on this model and the data from three prototype projects, the majority of the least-cost investment would be in permanent, but seasonally occupied, housing.

SELF-SUFFICIENCY AND PRODUCTIVITY IN CHINESE AGRICULTURE: IMPLICATIONS FOR CHINA'S WTO ACCESSION AgEcon
Felloni, Fabrizio; Gilbert, John; Wahl, Thomas I.; Wandschneider, Philip R..
In the past twenty years the growth of China's economy and agriculture has been extraordinary. However it seems unlikely that, without substantial interventions, China will attain self-sufficiency in agriculture by 2005. We build a CGE model to examine the main trade policy options available to Chinese policy makers. We compare the welfare effects of each policy and explore the potential of biotechnology for agricultural productivity increase.

Incentives for Ex Ante wildfire risk mitigation in the wildland-urban interface: The relationship between contingent wildfire insurance and fuel management subsidies AgEcon
Lankoande, Mariam D.; Yoder, Jonathan K.; Wandschneider, Philip R..
Contingent wildfire insurance and fuel management cost-sharing programs are becoming more prevalent in western states. This paper develops a model to examine the incentive effects of these two mechanisms for private investment in wildfire risk mitigation. The model shows that contingent insurance contracts strengthen incentives for risk mitigation relative to pooled contracts and subsidies induce more risk mitigation effort by reducing margin private costs of mitigation. With pooled insurance contracts, individuals in low-risk areas subsidize the premiums of individuals living in high-risk areas, inducing too much development in high-risk areas. Subsidies can improve incentives for risk mitigation, but they also may induce excessive development in...

HOW DO FARMERS WHO ADOPT MULTIPLE CONSERVATION PRACTICES DIFFER FROM THEIR NEIGHBORS? AgEcon
Upadhyay, Bharat Mani; Young, Douglas L.; Wang, H. Holly; Wandschneider, Philip R..
This study analyses three key conservation practices adoption behavior for 266 farmers in eastern Washington. Results revealed (1) that multiple practice adopters contrast more sharply with non-adopters than do adopters of a single practice, and (2) single practice adopters differ more from zero practice adopters than from other farmers.

The Contribution of the Grape and Wine Industry to Idaho’s Economy: Agribusiness and Tourism Impacts AgEcon
Foltz, John C.; Woodall, Stacie; Wandschneider, Philip R.; Taylor, R. Garth.
The impact of Idaho’s wine and grape industry was assessed as an agribusiness and as a tourist industry. Idaho’s grape and wine industry is in its infancy, with wine sales of $15 million from 15 wineries and growers cultivating about 1,000 acres, primarily in southwestern Idaho’s Canyon County. Synthesized output multipliers for wine tourism were virtually identical to the agribusiness output multipliers (1.86 and 2.10 for Canyon County and the state of Idaho, respectively). The wine and grape industry’s agribusiness impact is $15 million in sales and 120 jobs in Idaho, and $23 million and 140 jobs for Canyon County. In contrast, tourism expenditures stimulate other businesses in addition to the agribusiness linkages of grape and wine production. Thus,...

A SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS OF QUALITY OF LIFE INDICES ACROSS COUNTRIES AgEcon
Rahman, Tauhidur; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Wandschneider, Philip R..
This paper attempts to provide a comprehensive analysis of interrelationships among the determinants of the Quality of Life (QOL). We show that various measures of well-being are highly sensitive to domains of QOL that are considered in the construction of comparative indices, and how measurable inputs into the well-being indicators are aggregated and weighted to arrive at composite measures of QOL. We present a picture of conditions among the 43 countries of the world with respect to such interrelated domains of QOL as the relationship with family and friends, emotional well-being, health, work and productivity, material well-being, feeling part of one's community, personal safety, and the quality of environment. On the basis of Borda Rule and the...

The Effects of Transitional Yields on Adverse Selection in Crop Insurance AgEcon
Walters, Cory G.; Shumway, C. Richard; Chouinard, Hayley H.; Wandschneider, Philip R..
Transitional yields based on county average can be used by producers as the basis to obtain crop insurance on fields that have not previously produced the crop. Using field-level crop insurance contract data for several crops in five different growing regions we examine the impact of this asymmetric information on adverse selection. Our results indicate that adverse selection does exist from the use of transitional yields and that it is crop specific but not land-quality specific.

A LATENT VARIABLE MIMIC APPROACH TO INFERRING THE QUALITY OF LIFE AgEcon
Rahman, Tauhidur; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Wandschneider, Philip R..
This paper makes three principal contributions. First, we propose a new estimator for the unobservable variable models with endogenous causes. We show that under factor analysis type of assumptions, Robinson and Ferrara (1977)'’s procedure is not fully efficient, and a more efficient procedure can be obtained by merging Robinson and Ferrara'’ procedure with that in Joreskog and Goldberger (1975) procedure. The asymptotic properties of the new estimator are compared with these two estimators and results indicate that, with our mixture approach, significant efficiency gains can be achieved. Second, we model the Quality of life (QOL) as an unobservable or latent link variable between observable causes and observable effects, which mitigates problem of bias,...

The Demand for Wine Tourism in Canyon County, Idaho AgEcon
Taylor, R. Garth; Woodall, Stacie; Wandschneider, Philip R.; Foltz, John C..
Many commercial wineries produce a dual product: commercial wine and wine tourism. Since Idaho wineries charge no entry price, wine tourism demand can only be ascertained with a shadow price for winery visitation. Demand for wine tourism visits for Canyon County in southern Idaho was estimated using the travel cost method. Trip demand was inelastic (-0.4 to -0.6) with respect to own price. The average value of Canyon County wine tourism ranged from $6 to $12 per person per trip, depending upon the assumed opportunity cost of travel time. Elasticities of tastes and preferences, closely related goods, and income were estimated with a view to understanding the market for Idaho's emerging wine tourism industry.

VALUING IDAHO WINERIES WITH A TRAVEL COST MODEL AgEcon
Woodall, Stacie; Wandschneider, Philip R.; Foltz, John C.; Taylor, R. Garth.
Many commercial wineries produce a dual product; commercial wine and wine tourism. Growth of wine tourism throughout the US has been phenomenal. In contrast to the price of wine, which is reflected in the market, the demand for wine tourism can be only ascertained with a shadow price for winery visitation. The demand for wine tourism visits for Canyon County in southern Idaho was estimated using the Travel Cost Method. The value of wine tourism in Canyon County was estimated to be $5.40 per person per trip and trip demand was highly inelastic at 0.5. Elasticities of other trip demand function variables were estimated and analyzed, with a view to informing the marketing of Idaho's emerging wine tourism industry.
