Warlop, Francois; Andrieu, Camille; Sallaberry, Camille; Filippi, Olivier; Lemoine, Hélène.

Organic farmers’ reality to manage functional agrobiodiversity in European organic apple orchards Organic Eprints
Fernique, Sarah; Penvern, Servane; Cardona, Aurélie; Ahrenfeldt, Erica; Grebeau, D.; Jamar, Laurent; kruzynska, Dorota; Matray, Silvia; Ozoliņa-Pole, Laura; Ralle, Baiba; Sigsgaard, Lene; Steinemann, Beatrice; Świergiel, Weronika; Telfser, Joseph; Warlop, Francois; Herz, Annette.
According to its principles and standards, organic farming particularly rely on natural processes and functional agro-biodiversity (FAB) to benefit from essential ecosystem services. However, these processes are mostly complex, hardly visible and site-specific, thereby making it difficult to assess and manage on-farm. A European survey has been carried out among organic farmers and emphasizes the variability among countries with a diversity of techniques targeting different functional groups according to farming contexts and farmers’ expectations. The different criteria used by farmers to evaluate FABtechniques efficiency and implementation potential clearly illustrate the difficulty to assess the agroecosystem as a whole.

New tools to manage and assess orchard Functional Agrobiodiversity (FAB) Organic Eprints
Sigsgaard, Lene; Warlop, Francois; Pfiffner, Lukas; Herz, Annette.
The EcoOrchard project (2015-18) has produced a handbook on FAB assessment in dialogue with growers and advisors and a technical guideline for FAB orchard management. Orchards are perennial cultures, and, especially in organic fruit production, it is essential to design and manage orchards in a way which favours predators and parasitoids over pests. Increasing plant biodiversity and habitats in such a way that beneficial organisms are favoured is called Functional Agrobiodiversity (FAB). The value of FAB for reducing pesticide use in fruit production is generally acknowledged, and many organic fruit growers try to increase it in spite of a shortage of information on FAB, economical and technical challenges and lack of situation-specific, detailed advice....

Vertical project : designing fruit agroforestry systems for a renewed horticulture Organic Eprints
Castel, Laurie; Warlop, Francois; Ronzon, Julien; Poliakoff, Hélène; Fourrié, Laetitia.
Although it's addressing multiple issues for modern farming, agroforestry mixing fruit trees and annual crops (mainly vegetables) has not been so well documented under temperate climate. One expected amenity of agroforestry is to increase biodiversity and natural pest regulation within the plot. While fruit trees are among the crops that rely most on plant protection products, we made the hypothesis that introduction of annual crops in the perennial system can lead to effective biocontrol and to input reduction, while developing other synergies between crops (shadow beneficial effects, water limitation, ….) or social amenities. On two locations (Durette/TAB) in southern France, with different characteristics (crop rotation, marketing, surface...), the...

RIS, Nicolas; ION-SCOTTA, Michela; AL KHATIB, Fadel; Lambion, Jérôme; Warlop, Francois; Bout, Alexandre.

Control strategies for limiting olive fruit fly (Diptera, Bactrocera oleae) populations Organic Eprints
Poullot, Delphine; Warlop, Francois.
Olive fruit fly remains the key pest in organic olive groves. Growers need quick and efficient answers because alternative methods to sprays (such as mass trapping or biological control) have not yet given satis-factory results. Preliminary laboratory trials were car-ried out with several active ingredients in various dosages. Efficacy was then assessed at 24 hour and 48 hour intervals after application. The article presents the encouraging results of the trials.

How to optimize fruit and berry cultivar selection for organic farmers ? A comparison of European approaches. Organic Eprints

Most of the currently grown commercial fruit cultivars remain unsuitable to low-input or sustainable organic farming systems. The major reason is that they have been developed and selected under high input cultivation, and without sufficient attention to susceptibility to pests and diseases. Some of these cultivars are nevertheless marketed as resistant because they carry genetic markers for major resistance genes but these are unfortunately prone to break-down (most of apple resistant cultivars relay only on the Vf). As a result, new fruit cultivars tend to reveal unexpected and often undesirable traits when grown in commercial organic orchards, and thus fail to bring about the much needed expansion in organic production and market availability. However,...

SMART PROJECT : Agroforestry systems using fruit trees and vegetables in France Organic Eprints
Warlop, Francois.
Agroforestry systems mixing fruit trees and annual crops are very well developed and studied in tropical countries, but they have been forgotten or neglected during the last 40 years in France and Europe. Current trends and challenges in agriculture (land access, periurban agricultural forms, inputs reduction through functional biodiversity and crop diversification) lead small farmers in France to combine annual plants and fruits with the aim to increase their field performance on a multifunctional basis. The SMART project identified about 150 projects (mostly all being organic) and further explored 40 of them, to better understand organization and adoption criteria.

Organic fruit growers often suffer economic losses due to insect damages. The available natural pest control products are not always effective; and most important: many organic fruit growers would prefer not to use any pesticide at all. Growing flowers in order to gain more natural enemies, and hence less pests is a technique called Functional Agro-Biodiversity (FAB). Ongoing research in this CORE Organic Plus project aims to collect existing knowledge and generate new knowledge in order to use FAB successfully in orchards.

Warlop, Francois.
Two-years trials show evident efficacy (usually more than 80%, on most of varieties, and for a 50°C treatment during 2 minutes) of hot water treatments against post-harvest diseases (Monilinia sp. mainly). Growers do hesitate to invest since engines remain expensive, but calculation of the treatment cost shows that the investment is covered after 2 or 3 years, for a medium damage rate.
