Extending Theil's Inequality Index: Addressing Dynamic Convergence in the OECD AgEcon
Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Seale, James L., Jr.; Moss, Charles B..
Theil’s inequality index is used to measure convergence in 14 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries in terms of per capita income, per capita government and investment expenditures, and industrial employment. Results indicate that all four variables have converged over the sample period, 1950-1988. Next, the indices of the four variables are made dynamic by using pairwise cointegration and Johansen’s I(2) multi-cointegration tests. These tests indicate that the four inequalities are cointegrated; that is, there exists a long-run equilibrium between the four inequalities of the 14 OECD countries. However, the inequality in per capita government expenditure has no effect on the G-7 equilibrium when analyzed without the...

The Development of the GDPs of the G-7 Countries, 1950-1988 AgEcon
Gao, Xiaoming; Moss, Charles B.; Theil, Henri; Weatherspoon, Dave D..
Data from the International Comparison Project are used to analyze the development of the real gross domestic products (GDPs) of the G-7 countries from 1950-1988. For the group as a whole, per capita GDP increased almost threefold in this period, whereas the inequality among the seven countries decreased dramatically.

The Effects of Biotechnology Policy on Trade and Growth AgEcon
Oehmke, James F.; Maredia, Mywish K.; Weatherspoon, Dave D..
Despite the clear influence of European Union biotechnology restrictions on trade patterns, very little work has been done to model these influences or their long-run effects. This paper presents an economic trade theory model of biotechnology, biotechnology research and development (R&D), and biotechnology regulation. The model analyzes the impact of European Union consumer preferences on production and consumption of biotechnology products, the level and national origin of biotechnology R&D, trade patterns, and growth. The results indicate that developing countries may become the major producers of biotechnology agricultural products if they can establish the necessary legal infrastructure; and that European biotechnology regulations effectively...

NORTH-NORTH-SOUTH AG-BIOTECH POLICY: IMPLICATIONS FOR GROWTH AND TRADE AgEcon
Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Oehmke, James F.; Wolf, Christopher A.; Naseem, Anwar; Maredia, Mywish K.; Hightower, Amie L..
This paper examines the impact of European Union policy on genetically modified organisms on trade flows and economic growth. Restrictive European Union policies on biotech production and consumption result in: an effective export subsidy of capital to the South; new trade flows; North America being the dominant producer of biotech research and development; the South being a dominant producer of biotech products; and the European Union being the dominant producer of traditional agricultural products.

CYCLICAL CONCENTRATION AND BIOTECH R&D ACTIVITY: A NEO-SCHUMPETERIAN MODEL AgEcon
Oehmke, James F.; Wolf, Christopher A.; Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Naseem, Anwar; Maredia, Mywish K.; Raper, Kellie Curry; Hightower, Amie L..
Several characteristics of biotech industry structure follow cyclical patterns. Mergers and acquisitions activity shows cyclical behavior, with peaks from 1988-92 and 1996-97 and a valley from 1993-95. The ratio of large-firm to small-firm field trials, and the Herfindahl-Hirshmann concentration index, move pro-cyclically with M&A activity. This paper develops a formal, dynamic, neo-Schumpeterian model of endogenous R&D and innovation. The model generalizes and extends the literature on biotech industry concentration. For specified parameter values, the out-of-steady-state dynamics are examined, and shown to generate model behavior which is consistent with empirical descriptions of biotech concentration and R&D-activity cycles.

EMERGING BUSINESSES: THE SOUTH AFRICAN WINE INDUSTRY CASE AgEcon
Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Alade, Julius A.; Danley, Cheryl.
Emerging economies such as South Africa, only a few years out of apartheid, have been feeling the strains of socio-political change. While South Africa has experienced political reform, economic reform and access are slow to come. Currently, South Africa is the 7th largest producer of wine in the world. Although this industry is impressive, the apartheid era production practices have caused primarily the European consumers and media to be vocal about this issue. However, this concern has spread to other regions. The South African government and wine industry must respond to the external and internal market pressures and minimize transaction costs. Both entities want to increase wine exports and expand market share, however, given the socio-economic...

Small Farmer Organizations and Transformed Markets in Southern Africa AgEcon
Neven, David; Hopkins, Rose; Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Reardon, Thomas.
There are many interesting illustrations of the strong economic impact of commercial farmers in Southern Africa. For example, over just the last five years, tobacco production in Zimbabwe dropped dramatically from 240 to 60 million while at the same time in Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique tobacco production increased to record highs and spurred the development of tobacco processing infrastructure (The Economist 2004). The main driving force behind this change are the hundreds of (white) commercial farmers who lost their farms due to Zimbabwe's radical land policy but found facilitating governments in neighboring countries. Using the case of South Africa, this paper addresses the question of how commercial farmers, as a key economic resource, can play a key...

IS AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH STILL A PUBLIC GOOD? AgEcon
Oehmke, James F.; Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Wolf, Christopher A.; Naseem, Anwar; Maredia, Mywish K.; Hightower, Amie L..
The nature of public agricultural research changed in 1980 when the Bayh-Dole Act allowed universities to retain title to inventions that were created with Federal funds, and the court case Diamond v. Chakrabarty allowed patenting of living tissue and eventually other bio-engineered products. In 1997, over 2,300 new licenses and options were executed on academic life-sciences property. This raises the questions agricultural research still be a public good? This paper is a critical first step in understanding how increasingly private ownership of intellectual property affects the agribusiness environment and the evolving role of public agricultural research institutions. The innovative step in this paper is the development of a formal economic model...

What Adds Value in Specialty Coffee? Managerial Implications from Hedonic Price Analysis of Central and South American E-Auctions AgEcon
Donnet, M. Laura; Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Hoehn, John P..
We analyze price and quality information at the procurement level in the specialty coffee supply chain using data from small and large volume e-auctions. Hedonic price equations reveal that the Cup of Excellence auction is a more differentiated market disclosing more information about coffee values associated with ratings, rankings, quantities available, and country reputations whereas information in the Q auction is more limited and tends to be remunerated to a lesser extent. These results indicate that there are different business models and valuation of product characteristics within the specialty coffee industry. Management implications are drawn for specialty coffee producers and roasters.

CONVERGENCE OF THE G-7: A COINTEGRATION APPROACH AgEcon
Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Seale, James L., Jr.; Moss, Charles B..
Income convergence among the G-7 countries was demonstrated using Theil's inequality (entropy) index. G-7 convergence was also found for three potential factors of influence on economic growth: government expenditure, investment expenditure, and industrial employment. Pairwise cointegration tests indicated that income inequality was cointegrated with the other three inequality measures for the time period of 1950-88. Finally, Johansen's I(2) multi-cointegration tests indicated that three of the four inequality measures (i.e. income, investment expenditure, and industrial employment) were cointegrated suggesting that there exists a long-run equilibrium between the inequality in income, investment expenditure, and industrial employment.

THE ROLE OF SCIENTIFIC AND BUSINESS INTEGRITY IN THE FUTURE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY: A SCENARIO ANALYSIS AgEcon
Peterson, H. Christopher; Weatherspoon, Dave D..
The emergence of biotechnology in crop and livestock applications has been an issue of great controversy. Proponents argue that the potential benefits are dramatic while opponents have raised many concerns about the technology's risks. The Starlink debacle is a prime example of the undesirable outcomes which the debate has created. Given the controversy, what is the future of biotechnology for food uses? This paper is designed to address this question with a focus on the feasible range of alternative futures (scenarios) that could emerge. As a major variable in this analysis, the integrity of the scientific and business communities plays a critically important role. The paper begins with a description of three key uncertainties-food security,...

ALTERNATIVE ITALIAN AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVE SYSTEMS IN THE CHANGING EU FOOD SYSTEM AgEcon
Russo, Carlo; Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Peterson, H. Christopher.
The European food system is undergoing significant change driven both by global competitive forces and local conditions. Market globalization and technological innovation are interacting with the reform of EU's agricultural policies (CAP) and a renewed interest by the European society in the social and environmental functions of agriculture. These factors have created a new and challenging economic environment both for farmers and the food industry across Europe (Tarditi, 1997).

Price Determinants in Top Quality E-Auctioned Specialty Coffees AgEcon
Donnet, M. Laura; Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Hoehn, John P..
The US specialty coffee industry has grown from $1 billion in 1990 to $11 billion in 2006 and is expected to continue to grow into the foreseeable future. This growth particularly depends on prices coordinating the specialty coffee supply chain through two-way information exchange between roasters and producers. We analyze the determinants of specialty coffee prices by estimating a hedonic price function for specialty Central and South American coffees traded at e-auctions. We hypothesize that since specialty coffee is a differentiated product, prices will be determined by both sensory and reputation attributes. The results show that prices are influenced by the quality rating, which is a sensory variable, and by the quality rankings established in the...

EFFECTS OF MANAGERS' POWER ON CAPITAL STRUCTURE: A STUDY OF ITALIAN AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVES AgEcon
Russo, Carlo; Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Peterson, H. Christopher; Sabbatini, Massimo.
Excessive leverage is one of the most important problems facing Italian agricultural cooperatives as the competition in the EU intensifies. An empirical study of 500 agricultural cooperatives supports the hypothesis that cooperatives characterized as having "powerful managers" have a capital structure that is significantly different from the "nonpowerful manager" cooperatives. Powerful manager cooperatives were less leveraged and had a long term strategy that focused on minimizing financial risk by increasing their equity/asset ratio. The result of this strategy is an increased probability of long term international competitiveness.
