Food Markets, Policy, and Technology: The Case of Honduran Dry Beans AgEcon
Martel, Pedro V.; Bernsten, Richard H.; Weber, Michael T..
To identify constraints and options to increase bean subsector’s productivity, 239 farmers and 57 city traders were surveyed, and a rapid appraisal of the El Salvadorian market was conducted. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, logistic analysis, and linear regression analysis. This research shows that farmers' socioeconomic characteristics, production environments, and institutional factors all affect the varietal adoption process.

Access to Land, and Poverty Reduction in Rural Zambia: Connecting the Policy Issues AgEcon
Jayne, Thomas S.; Zulu, Ballard; Kajoba, Gear; Weber, Michael T..
It might be considered unlikely that inadequate access to land would be one of the major causes of rural poverty in Zambia. However, evidence presented in this paper shows that economically viable arable land is not in great abundance in Zambia after considering the current situation with respect to access to road infrastructure and access to services and markets. In fact, access to land is already a major problem for large segments of the rural population in Zambia. Moreover, depending of future...

A Diagnostic Perspective Assessment of the Production and Marketing System for Mangoes in the Eastern Caribbean AgEcon
Hrapsky, Alan; Weber, Michael T.; Riley, Harold.
The objective of this research was to provide USAID with a diagnostic-prescriptive assessment of the mango commodity system that would be useful in the design and management of USAID’s project portfolio. A secondary objective was to demonstrate how a market-guided food systems approach could be applied to a particular commodity, thus facilitating coordination of vertical stages in the agricultural production and marketing system. The food systems approach begins with identification of consumer requirements in terms of product specifications and volume flows, examines the production changes necessary to achieve these requirements, then systematically diagnoses constraints at each stage in the production/marketing chain, and prescribes realistic...

Improving Kenya's Domestic Horticultural Production and Marketing System: Current Competitiveness, Forces of Change, and Challenges for the Future (Volume II: Horticultural Marketing) AgEcon
Tschirley, David L.; Muendo, Kavoi Mutuku; Weber, Michael T..
The specific objectives of this Volume are to: estimate the share of domestic FFV production going to international and domestic markets; determine the share of imports from Tanzania and Uganda in Kenya’s horticultural markets; investigate the competitiveness of Kenya’s horticultural produce in local and regional markets; determine the current and likely future share of key marketing channels in Kenya’s domestic FFV marketing system, especially “modern” channels such as supermarkets and more traditional channels such as open air markets and kiosks; and recommend steps that should be taken to place Kenya’s domestic horticulture in a position to compete favorably in local and regional markets.

A Cross-Country Analysis of Household Responses to Adult Mortality in Rural Sub-Saharan Africa: Implications For HIV/AIDS Mitigation And Rural Development Policies. AgEcon
Mather, David; Donovan, Cynthia; Jayne, Thomas S.; Weber, Michael T.; Chapoto, Antony; Mazhangara, Edward; Bailey, Linda; Yoo, Kyeongwon; Yamano, Takashi; Mghenyi, Elliot W..
This paper summarizes and synthesizes across the results of a set of country studies on the effects of prime-age adult mortality on rural households in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Zambia. Each study is based on large representative rural household surveys. These findings have implications for the design of efforts to mitigate some of the most important effects of rural adult mortality, and for key development policies and priorities.

Using Empirical Information in the Era of HIV/AIDS to Inform Mitigation and Rural Development Strategies: Selected Results from African Country Studies AgEcon
Mather, David; Donovan, Cynthia; Jayne, Thomas S.; Weber, Michael T..
This paper summarizes empirical results from a synthesis of a set of country studies undertaken by Michigan State University and partner institutions in five African countries, each of which is based upon large-scale rural household surveys. The results demonstrate that the post-death land/labor ratios and income of rural households directly affected by prime-age adult mortality are more heterogeneous than implied by some of the literature and discussion among development practitioners.

Changements dans l’allocation des terres, la production et la taille des exploitations dans le secteur des petits exploitants rwandais sur la période 1984/1990 à 2002 AgEcon
Mpyisi, Edson; Weber, Michael T.; Shingiro, Emmanuel; Loveridge, Scott.
There have been major shifts/changes in land use patterns in Rwanda over the past twelve years. A few striking observations include: As a percentage of total farmland, cultivated land increased. The increase in cultivated land occurred at the expense of pasture and fallow and woodlot. The share of pasture and fallow decreased from 22% in 1990 to 14% in 2002 and woodlot decreased from 11% in 1990 to 7% in 2002. This trend of increasing cultivated land is apparent from the mid-eighties to today. These observations imply that land is being farmed much more intensively without much time to fallow and allow the soil to rejuvenate. Pasture and woodlot are also being cut down at the expense of cultivation. This has important potential implications for...

SMALLHOLDER INCOME AND LAND DISTRIBUTION IN AFRICA: IMPLICATIONS FOR POVERTY REDUCTION STRATEGIES AgEcon
Jayne, Thomas S.; Yamano, Takashi; Weber, Michael T.; Tschirley, David L.; Benfica, Rui M.S.; Neven, David; Chapoto, Antony; Zulu, Ballard.
This paper provides a micro-level foundation for discussions of income and asset allocation within the smallholder sector in Eastern and Southern Africa, and explores the implications of these findings for rural growth and poverty alleviation strategies in the region. Results are drawn from nationally-representative household surveys in five countries between 1990 and 2000: Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Mozambique, and Zambia. The paper shows that farm sizes in most of Africa are declining over time; that farm sizes are declining at a faster rate for households at the low end of the land size distribution; that Gini coefficient measures indicate that farm sizes within the small-farm sectors are generally more inequitably distributed than in Asia and Latin...

Evaluating the Impact on Market Performance of Investments in Market Information Systems: Methodological Challenges AgEcon
Staatz, John M.; Kizito, Andrew M.; Weber, Michael T.; Dembele, Niama Nango.
Evaluating the impact on market performance of investments in agricultural market information systems (MIS) face several methodological challenges. These fall into two broad categories: (a) defining the dimensions of market performance to measure (which is a function of whom the MIS is designed to serve) and identifying reliable indicators of those performance dimensions, and (b) identifying the causal effects of the MIS. The determination of causal effects in turn requires establishing a credible baseline, measuring “treatment effects” (i.e., the effects on economic behavior of receiving improved information from an MIS), dealing with problems of endogenous placement of treatment, and interpreting the validity of stakeholders’ statements and...
