Developing European operational oceanography for Blue Growth, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and ecosystem-based management ArchiMer
She, Jun; Allen, Icarus; Buch, Erik; Crise, Alessandro; Johannessen, Johnny A.; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Lips, Urmas; Nolan, Glenn; Pinardi, Nadia; Reissmann, Jan H.; Siddorn, John; Stanev, Emil; Wehde, Henning.
Operational approaches have been more and more widely developed and used for providing marine data and information services for different socio-economic sectors of the Blue Growth and to advance knowledge about the marine environment. The objective of operational oceanographic research is to develop and improve the efficiency, timeliness, robustness and product quality of this approach. This white paper aims to address key scientific challenges and research priorities for the development of operational oceanography in Europe for the next 5-10 years. Knowledge gaps and deficiencies are identified in relation to common scientific challenges in four EuroGOOS knowledge areas: European Ocean Observations, Modelling and Forecasting Technology, Coastal...

Real Time Quality Control of temperature and salinity measurements within MyOcean and Copernicus in situ TAC ArchiMer
Von Schuckmann, Karina; Garau, Bartolomé; Wehde, Henning; Gies, Tobias; Durand, Dominique; Reseghetti, Franco.
An important step within the MyOcean project is to uniform existing Real Time Quality Control (RTQC) and quality assurance procedures of the different nations involved. As the MyOcean service is thought to be available at any time and open to anyone, an agreement in good Real Time Quality Control (RTQC) methods and procedures is vital to guarantee high data quality distributed to users via international exchange. The agreement on the implementation of uniform RTQC procedures have the severe potential to overcome the inconsistency within the existing datasets provided actually by the international community. This document is based upon previous experiences and has the following objectives: - “To ensure the data consistency within a single data set and...

Strategy for sustainability of the Joint European Research Infrastructure Network for Coastal Observatories - JERICO ArchiMer
Puillat, Ingrid; Farcy, Patrick; Durand, Dominique; Petihakis, George; Morin, Pascal; Kriegger, Magali; Petersen, Wilhelm; Tintoré, Joaquin; Sorensen, Kai; Sparnocchia, Stefania; Wehde, Henning.
The JERICO European research infrastructure (RI) is integrating several platform types i.e. fixed buoys, piles, moorings, drifters, Ferryboxes, gliders, HF radars, coastal cable observatories and the associated technologies dedicated to the observation and monitoring of the European coastal seas. The infrastructure is to serve both the implementation of European marine policies and the elucidation of key scientific questions through dedicated observation and monitoring plans. It includes observations of the physical, chemical and biological compartments and aims at a better integration of marine biology with physical and chemical oceanology, through specific interactions with other relevant ocean observing systems that provide complementary observations....
