Fruit thinning in organic apple growing with optimized timing and combinations strategies including (new) natural spray products and mechanical rope-divices Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco P.; Chevillat, Véronique S.; Tschabold, Jean-Luc; Stadler, Walter.
The aim of our study was to find new thinning methods for organic apple production able to fulfil the standards of Bio-Suisse, the main label organisation of the organic food sector in Switzerland. The 14 trials reported were carried out during flowering period in 2003 and 2004 on the cultivars Pinova, Gala, Maigold, Elstar, Golden Delicious and Otava at different sites. The results confirm the good efficiency of mechanical thinning with the rope thinner and the thinning potential of vinasse, a by-product of molasses. Different vinasse products were tested (K-Vinasse, light-vinasse, N-Vinasse) and it was observed that those containing less nitrogen had a minor thinning effect. To avoid phytotoxicity on leaves, the concentration of NVinasse should not...

Experiences with the Swiss (Organic) Method How to Introduce New Apple Varieties Into Retail Market: Flavour Group Concept and Variety Team Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco P.; Leder, Alfred.
The choice of suitable cultivars is of central importance to successful organic fruit production. Because of the limited options for plant protection, organic fruit production places particularly high demands on disease and pest tolerance or resistance. Additionally, management aspects must be considered such as marketing options, available sites, and the desired farm structure.

Effect of Consumption of Organically and Conventionally Produced Apples on Antioxidant Activity and DNA Damage in Humans Organic Eprints
Briviba, Karlis; Stracke, Berenicke A.; Rüfer, Corinna E.; Watzl, Bernhard; Weibel, Franco P.; Bub, Achim.
The present study was performed to compare the effects on antioxidant activity and on DNA damage of organic and conventionally produced apples grown under controlled conditions in human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Six healthy volunteers consumed either organically or conventionally grown apples (Golden Delicious, 1000 g) from two neighboring commercial farms in a double-blinded, randomized, cross-over study. The average content of total identified and quantified polyphenols in the organically and conventionally produced apples was 308 and 321 µg/g fresh weight, respectively. No statistically significant differences in the sum of phenolic compounds or in either of the polyphenol classes were found between the agricultural methods. Consumption of neither...

First results with the Gas Discharge Visualisation (GDV) method (Kirlian photography) to assess the inner Quality of apples Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco P.; Saikov, Aleksander; Bigler, Christoph.
GDV technology can provide useful information for distinguishing healthy and stressed plants and, in some cases, it can provide useful information for distinguishing different varieties and rootstocks. It can also provide information for distinguishing fruits grown using different fertilization treatments. However, in our cases with fruit of very similar standard quality, we were not able to find complementary information to distinguish organically from conventionally grown apple fruit. Currently we are carrying out two larger and refined studies on just that topic with 5 conventional/ organic comparison pairs from harvests of two years.

Successfull Blossom Thinning and Crop Load Regulation for Organic Apple Growing with Potassium-bi-carbonate (Armicarb(R)): Results of Field Experiments over 3 Years and with 11 Cultivars Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco P.; Lemcke, B.; Monzelio, U.; Giordano, I.; Kloss, B..
With field trials over 3 years in a commercial organic orchard in Switzerland we have tested the efficacy of Armicarb® (potassium-bi-carbonate) for flower thinning in organic apple production. Over time, Armicarb was tested on 11 cultivars, at different application periods, in different concentrations, and always in comparison to other agents that are already allowed for thinning in organic fruit production in the European Union as e.g. lime sulphur, molasses, mechanical rope-thinner or combinations of methods. Armicarb proved to be an efficient and reliable thinning agent with an efficacy similar to the now recommended methods with rope device, molasses or lime sulphur but has the advantage to be an environmentally very friendly product. On the other...

Sensory, yield and quality differences between organically and conventionally grown winter wheat Organic Eprints
Arncken, Christine; Mäder, Paul; Mayer, Jochen; Weibel, Franco P..
BACKGROUND: Consumers expect organic produce to have higher environmental, health and sensory related qualities than conventional produce. In order to test sensory differences between bio-dynamically, bio-organically and conventionally grown winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Runal), we performed double-blinded triangle tests with two panels on dry wholemeal flour from the harvest years 2006, 2007 and 2009 and from two field replicates of the ‘DOK’ long-term farming system comparison field trial near Basel, Switzerland. Yield and quality parameters were also assessed. RESULTS: Significant farming system effects were found for yield (up to 42% reduction in the organic system), thousand kernel weight, hectolitre weight and crude protein content across...

Organic Highbush Blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) Production: Long-Term Effect of Cultivation System and pH Regulation on Plant Growth, Yield and Root Distribution and Biomass with Two Cultivars Organic Eprints
Suter, Francisco; Schmid, Andi; Daniel, Claudia; Weibel, Franco P.; Jenny, M..
In recent years, an increasing market for blueberries has developed in Switzerland. Blueberries are well suited for organic production because few disease and insect pests are currently found under Swiss conditions. Soil conditions present the greatest obstacle to blueberry cultivation in that Swiss soils are often too alkaline and have low soil organic matter content. During a nine-year (1998–2006) field experiment on an alkaline soil, we tested the feasibility and plant performance of three peat-free cultivation systems (deep ditch, flat ditch, raised bed) and two acidification methods (sulfur or citric acid versus an untreated control). Cultivars were ‘Bluecrop’ and ‘Reka’. The vegetative growth of the bushes was not significantly affected by the...

SENSORY AND HEALTH-RELATED FRUIT QUALITY OF ORGANIC APPLES. A COMPARATIVE FIELD STUDY OVER THREE YEARS USING CONVENTIONAL AND HOLISTIC METHODS TO ASSESS FRUIT QUALITY Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco P.; Treutter, Dieter; Häseli, Andi; Graf, Ursula.
In a 3 years lasting field study with the ‘Golden Delicious’ cultivar, we compared fruits of 5 pairs of organic/integrated fruit farms. The orchards were similar in microclimate, soil conditions and planting system. To assess inner fruit quality we investigated at the beginning and at the end of cold storage: (i) standard parameters (firmness, sugar, malic acid., mineral content); (ii) sensorial quality by panel tests; (iii) health related components (23 phenolic compounds, nutritional fibres; vitamins); and (v) fruit «vitality quality» by holistic approaches (crystallisation in copper chloride, self degradation tests, feeding preference tests with laboratory rats). The most significant differences were found in year one of the study, and were by...

Present Status of Organic Fruit Growing in Europe Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco P.; Häseli, Andreas; Schmid, Otto; Willer, Helga.
Organic fruit growing in Europe has experienced remarkable growth rates since the mid 1990's. Southern states, especially Italy, Spain and France have the largest land area with organic fruit, are also growing olives, citrus and chestnuts. Mainly increasing interest of supermarket chains is responsible for this buoyancy, but also the availability of better plant protection products e.g. granulosis virus and mating disruption against codling moth, and Neem oil against Rosy Apple Aphid. State subsidies varying from 600 to more than 1600 Euro /ha/y in the EU-countries (15) are less decisive for the conversion of top fruit production. Market share of organic table fruit is only 1 to 2 %, reaching 4 to 5 % in Switzerland. For Switzerland, we estimate a market...

Sustainability assessment of GM crops in a Swiss agricultural context Organic Eprints
Speiser, Bernhard; Stolze, Matthias; Oehen, Bernadette; Gessler, Cesare; Weibel, Franco P.; Bravin, Esther; Kilchenmann, Adeline; Widmer, Albert; Charles, Raffael; Lang, Andreas; Stamm, Christian; Triloff, Peter; Tamm, Lucius.
The aim of this study was to provide an ex ante assessment of the sustainability of genetically modified (GM) crops under the agricultural conditions prevailing in Switzerland. The study addressed the gaps in our knowledge relating to (1) the agronomic risks/benefits in production systems under Swiss conditions (at field and rotation/orchard level), (2) the economic and socio-economic impacts associated with altered farming systems, and (3) the agro-ecological risks/benefits of GM crops (at field and rotation/orchard level). The study was based on an inventory of GM crops and traits which may be available in the next decade, and on realistic scenarios of novel agricultural practices associated with the use of GM crops in conventional, integrated, and...

Lutte contre Gloeosporium (album et perennans) des pommes biologiques Post-Recolte avec des produits oxidants et des eaux électrolytiques,et Pre-Recolte avec differents produits biologiques entre 2001-2004 Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco P.; Hahn, Priska; Lieber, Susanne; Häseli, Andi; Amsler, Thomas; Zingg, Daniel.

Improving the quality and shelf life of fruit from organic production systems Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco P.; Alföldi, Thomas.
Since the mid-1990s important key markets like the EU, USA and Japan have demonstrated a growth in the organic sector of around 20% per year. This strong growth of organics is underpinned by consumer concern over genetic engineering, food safety, health and nutrition (is it safe and healthy to eat?) and greater awareness of environmental issues (Torjusen, and Sangstad, 2004; Granatstein and Kirby, 2006). For farmers this provides an important opportunity in the ‘search for’ and ‘development of’ niche, new and nontraditional premium earning markets. However on-going improvements in conventional food production systems in terms of visible produce quality, but also with respect to environmental criteria, require a clear demonstration of the additional values...
