Ivemeyer, Silvia; Werne, Steffen; Heil, Fritz; Maeschli, Ariane; Notz, Christophe; Schneider, Claudia; Staehli, Pamela; Walkenhorst, Michael; Klocke, Peter.
Mastitis in dairy cows is a multi-causal disease. Animal husbandry is one of the important factors influencing herd udder health. In our study, skin lesion scores and cleanness scores are used as animal-based indicators for husbandry problems. We investigated the impact of husbandry on the prevalence of skin lesions and the correlation between skin lesions, cleanness and udder health in 67 herds joining the Swiss udder health project “pro-Q”. 62.8% of all examined cows had at least one skin lesion. 13% of all cows were seriously dirty. Housing factors, such as dimension and design of the lying area influenced the prevalence of skin lesions significantly. Hard surface, rubber mats, narrow dimensions of lying place, horns, as well as stanchion barns...

Sainfoin - new data on anthelmintic effects and production in sheep and goats Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix; Werne, Steffen; Maurer, Veronika; Perler, Erika; Amsler, Zivile; Probst, Johanna; Zaugg, Cornelia; Krenmeyr, Ilse.
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are one of the most important problems affecting health and therefore performance and welfare in small ruminant husbandry. The control of these parasites in the past strongly relied on the repeated use of anthelmintic drugs. This has led to nematode populations which are resistant to most of the currently available anthelmintics. Furthermore customer’s demands for organic and residue free animal products are increasing. The aforementioned problems have given a strong impetus for the development of new non-chemical strategies to control GIN. Previous research has pointed out the anthelmintic potential of sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia, cv. Visnovsky) and other tanniferous (CT) feed sources in goats and lambs infected with...

Untersuchungen zur präventiven Magen-Darm-Strongyliden- Kontrolle bei Milchziegen mittels Esparsettenpellets Organic Eprints
Werne, Steffen; Lèbre, Amélie; Arnold, N.; Schwery, Moritz; Volken, Herbert; Heckendorn, Felix.
Dairy goats, naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes, were fed 700g sainfoin- or alfalfa-pellets per day, additionally to a non-tanniferous basic diet. The effect of the feeding on the parasite egg excretion per gramm faeces (EPG) was monitored over a period of 7 weeks. The trial was conducted in parallel at two sites; in France and in Switzerland. At both sites the same quality of sainfoin- and alfalfapellets were used. Compared to the alfalfa group the EPG of the sainfoin fed goats were reduced by 12% in France andby 18% in Switzerland. A repeated measurement analysis revealed no significant difference between the feeding groups at neither site. As it is very likely that the effect of condensed tannins on gastrointestinal nematodes is dose...

Knowledge synthesis: Animal health and welfare in organic pig production - Final Report COREPIG Organic Eprints
Früh, Barbara; Bochicchio, David; Edwards, Sandra; Hegelund, Lene; Leeb, Christine; Heinonen, Mari; Maupertuis, F.; Sundrum, Albert; Werne, Steffen; Wiberg, Sophia; Mejer, Helena; Prunier, Armelle; Roepstorff, Allan; Lubac, Stanislas; Bonde, Marianne; Rousing, Tine; Sundrum, Albert; Lindgren, Kristina.
This report reviews the available information on the welfare of pigs when maintained according to organic standards in Europe. It begins by overviewing the populations of organic pigs in different countries at the time of writing (2007), the organic standards which govern their management and the systems in which they are typically kept. It then reviews for each stage in the production cycle (sows, suckling piglets, weaned pigs and fattening pigs) the available literature on health and welfare problems which might be experienced by the animals and the hazards which might give rise to these problems. Finally the report reviews the methods current available for the measurement of pig health and welfare and the extent to which monitoring systems currently...

Distribution of infection with gastro-intestinal nematodes in different groups of dairy goats in Switzerland and its influence on milk production Organic Eprints
Grohmann, Markus; Winckler, Christoph; Perler, Erika; Isensee, Anne; Christ, Benedikt; Amsler, Zivile; Werne, Steffen; Maurer, Veronika; Heckendorn, Felix.
The aim of this field study was to investigate interactions between gastro-intestinal nematode (GIN) infection, milk performance and age in goats in order to identify animal groups with higher susceptibility to GIN. On 3 farms (farm A: n = 29, farm B: n = 33, farm C: n = 117 milking goats) fecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) were performed in summer. All 179 milking goats were enrolled in FECRT and individual milk performance was recorded before and after FEC for FECRT. Furthermore, in early summer and autumn bulk fecal samples were cultured for every farm and GIN genera were determined.

Description of organic pig production in Europe Organic Eprints
Früh, Barbara; Bochicchio, Davide; Edwards, Sandra; Hegelund, Lene; Leeb, Christine; Sundrum, Albert; Werne, Steffen; Wiberg, Sophia; Prunier, Armelle.
With the aim to identify health and welfare strategies in organic pig production, a description of the different organic production systems was realized in eight European countries (Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and UK). This description was based on the following features: numbers of organic farms and organic pigs, market shares, housing and management characteristics, feeding characteristics, main health problems and relevant differences to the EU regulation existing at the time of the project. The results were primarily based on statistics, country-specific regulations as well as on expert and stakeholder interviews. Organic farming and organic pig production are rapidly developing in European countries. The European...

Effects of vegetation type and breed on n-3 and n-6 fatty acid proportions in heart, lung and brain phospholipids of lambs Organic Eprints
Leiber, Florian; Willems, Helen; Werne, Steffen; Ammer, Stefanie; Kreuzer, Michael.
The known influence of forage composition on fatty acid (FA) profiles in ruminants’ meat and milk may be different for other organs. Therefore, in the present study FA profiles of phospholipids in lung tissue, heart muscle and brain (medulla oblongata) were examined in growing Engadine and Valaisian Blacknose sheep grazing 4 pastures of different botanical composition, whereof three were extensively managed natural mountain swards. An intensively managed lowland pasture represented the control. On each pasture type, 6–7 lambs of each breed (54 in total) grazed for 9 weeks and were subsequently slaughtered. Tissue samples were taken at slaughter, homogenized and analyzed for FA profiles after phospholipid extraction. Response to the diets was tissue...

Alternativen zur betäubungslosen Ferkelkastration für Biobetriebe – Umsetzung in der Praxis (Workshop) Organic Eprints
Werne, Steffen.

The genetic basis for the selection of goats resistant to gastrointestinal nematodes Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix; Perler, Erika; Isensee, Anne; Amsler, Zivile; Werne, Steffen; Grohmann, Markus; Uzunoglu, Ferit; Saratsis, Anastasios; Maurer, Veronika; Stricker, Christian.
In Australia and New Zealand the formulation of breeding values for GIN resistance led to large selection programs in sheep successfully improving genetic resistance to GIN. Compared to sheep, the progress with respect to breeding for GIN resistance for various reasons has been much slower in goats. Data on heritabilities of potential auxiliary traits for selection and knowledge about their genetic correlation to production traits is limited. The present Swiss study was designed to fill this gap. A total of 1.500 goats (20 flocks) of the Alpine and Saanen breed were enrolled in the study. They were individually phenotyped twice for faecal egg count (FEC), FEC of Haemonchus (HCFEC; using fluorescin based differentiation of eggs), FAMACHA eye scores and...

PrOPara: Report on helminth parasite control strategies cross organic farms in Europe Organic Eprints
Werne, Steffen; Thüer, Susann; Grovermann, Christian; Moakes, Simon.
In recent years, a number of reports have been published on current practices for helminth control in the EU, but none in organic ruminants. As conventional and organic farms differ in their helminth control strategies, it is essential to record the current control practices for organic farms across EU, identify obstacles that hamper the implementation of innovations and determine farmers’ disposition towards such innovations to facilitate the implementation of appropriate innovations. Within the PrOPara project WP 4.1 was addressing the status quo of nematode control in organic ruminant farms across Europe. This did not only include the helminth management strategies, which are currently implemented, but also farmers’ perception towards nematode control...

Multi-species livestock farming systems: a review Organic Eprints
Martin, Guillaume; Barth, Kerstin; Benoit, Marc; Blanc, Mathilde; Brock, Christopher; Destruel, Marie; Dumont, Bertrand; Hübner, Severin; Magne, Marie-Angélina; Moerman, Marie; Mosnier, Claire; Primi, Riccardo; Ronchi, Bruno; Schanz, Lisa; Steinmetz, Lucille; Werne, Steffen; Winckler, Christoph.
Diversification of farming systems has been proposed as a major mechanism to address the many sustainability issues of modern industrial agriculture. Keeping two or more animal species or breeds (e.g. dairy cattle and beef cattle) simultaneously on the same farm is a diversification option that has received little attention to date. Moreover, most studies of multi-species livestock farming are partial, focus on specific dimensions of farm sustainability and address lower organizational levels, (i.e. within the farm). Thus, holistic assessment of potential benefits of multi-species livestock farming for farm sustainability is lacking. In this context, we synthesized potential benefits and limitations of multi-species livestock farming for farm...
