SURVIVAL AND OWNERSHIP OF INTERNET MARKETPLACES FOR AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Wheatley, W. Parker.
This research develops a theory of how market structure and belief formation drive survival and ownership of marketplaces. This paper explains the process for deriving theoretical predictions about these phenomena and suggests how comparison of theoretical predictions with actual outcomes in the context of agricultural Internet marketplaces provides an empirical test. By providing a sound understanding of the driving forces behind Internet marketplace ownership, a factual basis is introduced relative to concerns about concentration of the ownership of Internet marketplaces in the hands of buyers or sellers in agricultural markets.

EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF HYSTERESIS IN RURAL LABOR MARKETS IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY: THE CASE OF BANGLADESH AgEcon
Wheatley, W. Parker; Liu, Donald J.; del Ninno, Carlo.
This paper empirically investigates the relationship between commodity prices and wages in the rural labor markets of a developing country (i.e., Bangladesh). Given its basis on a theoretical justification for hysteresis, this empirical study provides a more complete method for investigating labor market hysteresis than previous research.

The Effects of the Internet on U.S. Bilateral Trade in Agricultural and Horticultural Commodities AgEcon
Wheatley, W. Parker; Roe, Terry L..
This paper discusses some of the reasons why the Internet might have a positive effect on the international trade in agricultural and horticultural commodities between the United States and its partners. It provides some simple econometric tests which differentiate the export and import effects of Internet infrastructure and cost. It also shows that the effect may be dependent on product heterogeneity/perishability. Given the growth of the Internet over the past decade, coming to terms and measuring these effects is important to both producers and policymakers in considering the competitive impacts of this new technology.

After the Bubble: The Survival and Ownership of Internet Marketplaces for Farmers and Agribusiness AgEcon
Wheatley, W. Parker; Buhr, Brian L..
This paper presents a theory of how industry structure and beliefs about Internet marketplace use have driven choice and ownership of marketplaces. The theory's predictions suggest that surviving Internet marketplaces will be those with strong historical linkages in an industry and those owned by or affiliated with major commodity buyers. Comparisons of these predictions with actual outcomes provide validation of the theory. Where predictions differ from results, observations are made as to the nature of the deviations.
