THE CYCLICAL NATURE OF THE U.S. SHEEP INDUSTRY AgEcon
Van Tassell, Larry W.; Whipple, Glen D..
The cyclical nature of numbers and prices of sheep and lambs was examined from 1924 through 1993. Tests for structural change also were conducted utilizing the minimization of Akaike's information criterion (MAIC). Results indicate that cyclical length in both stock sheep numbers and lamb prices has decreased over time, with a current 10- and 27-year cycle in stock sheep numbers and nine- and 27-year cycle lamb prices. Structural changes occurred in 1951 and 1968 for stock sheep number and in 1952 and 1972 for lamb prices.

IMPACT OF CHANGING CONSUMER PREFERENCES ON WILLINGNESS-TO-PAY FOR BEEF STEAKS IN ALTERNATIVE RETAIL PACKAGING AgEcon
Schmitz, John D.; Menkhaus, Dale J.; Whipple, Glen D.; Hoffman, Elizabeth; Field, Ray A..
The purpose of this study was to identify how consumer perceptions of selected attributes of beef steaks, individual consumer demographics and perceived changes in purchases of substitute meats affect willingness-to-pay for beef rib-eye steaks in the traditional overwrapped styrofoam tray and vacuum skin packages. A laboratory auction was used to obtain willingness-to-pay data. The results suggest that health related factors, particularly the concern regarding cholesterol, reduced the willingness-to-pay for beef rib-eye steaks, regardless of package type. For the vacuum skin package to be successful, information about the package is necessary, along with providing a consistent and quality product, particularly with respect to trim.

AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF SELECTED U.S. DAIRY PROGRAM CHANGES AgEcon
Whipple, Glen D.; Powe, Charles; Gray, Morgan D..
An interregional reactive programming model of the United States dairy industry is used to test the welfare implications of several dairy program changes on milk producers, milk consumers, and taxpayers. The results showed that each of the tested alternatives (price support reduction, price support reduction with frozen minimum Class I price, assessments, and production quotas) could reduce price support expenditures substantially. However, assessments reduced expenditures most effectively in terms of cost to milk producers for the United States generally while the price support reduction with frozen minimum Class I price was most efficacious in terms of cost to Southeast producers.

REVEALED COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE AND THE MEASUREMENT OF INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS FOR AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF WOOL EXPORTERS AgEcon
Leishman, David; Menkhaus, Dale J.; Whipple, Glen D..
Trade liberalization and laissez-faire economics are altering the structure of agricultural production and trade. The principle of comparative advantage, a classic tenet of economics, is a useful tool for understanding the future of world agriculture. This study employs a "Revealed Comparative Advantage" approach to investigate patterns of comparative advantage among six major wool exporting countries.

THE INFLUENCE OF CONSUMER CONCERNS AND DEMOGRAPHIC FACTORS ON PURCHASING PATTERNS FOR BEEF AgEcon
Menkhaus, Dale J.; Pingetzer, Robert L.; Whipple, Glen D.; Field, Ray A..
The results of a cross-tabulation analysis indicate that health-related concerns for roasts, steaks and ground beef are expressed significantly more frequently by survey participants eating less beef as compared to those who report the same amount in beef usage. The results generally suggest that chicken is served more frequently by those eating less beef than by those who have not changed their beef-eating habits or are eating more beef. Expense was identified as a concern for both roasts and steaks. Those eating less beef are typically older than those indicating more or the same beef usage.

WELFARE IMPLICATIONS OF THE WOOL ACT AgEcon
Whipple, Glen D.; Menkhaus, Dale J..
A model of the U.S. sheep industry is estimated and simulated to determine the impact of the wool incentive program on actors in U.S. sheep product markets. The simulation analysis indicates that U.S. sheep producers and lamb and wool consumers are the program’s gainers while lamb and wool exporters and taxpayers are its losers. Net societal losses averaged $26.4 million per year during the 1980-85 period, considering U.S. as well as exporter interests. This loss is about 2.5% of average U.S. consumer expenditures on lamb and wool over the period.

AN EMPIRICAL APPLICATION OF LABORATORY EXPERIMENTAL AUCTIONS IN MARKETING RESEARCH AgEcon
Menkhaus, Dale J.; Borden, George W.; Whipple, Glen D.; Hoffman, Elizabeth; Field, Ray A..
A laboratory experimental auction was used to determine factors influencing the relative value consumers place on alternative retail beef packaging. Results indicate information is very important for the successful introduction and marketing of the vacuum skin package. Physical appearance of the beef plays a major role in purchasing decisions by consumers, with fat and shape significantly decreasing the value of beef in the vacuum skin package relative to beef in the overwrapped styrofoam tray package. Experimental economics procedures, when combined with traditional marketing research techniques, can provide useful information for marketing decisions and economic analyses.
