Indo-Pacific coral species belonging to the subfamily Montastreinae Vaughan & Wells, 1943 (Scleractinea-Coelenterata) Part II. The genera Cyphastrea, Leptastrea, Echinopora and Diploastrea Naturalis
Wijsman-Best, M..
INTRODUCTION In the first part of the study on the Montastreinae (Wijsman-Best, 1977) I have dealt with the genera Montrastrea and Plesiastrea on the basis of material from a wide range of localities in the Indo-Pacific ocean. In the present paper dealing with the remaining genera of the Montastreinae the geographical approach has been extended. This study is based upon collections from Hawaii, Enewetak (Marshall Islands), New Caledonia, Eastern Australia, Indonesia, Western Thailand, the Mascarenes, the Seychelles and the Red Sea (Gulf of Aqaba). In most of these areas locally available collections have been examined as well as material collected by myself, with ecological data. Material from Western Thailand has kindly been given to me on a loan by H....

Biological results of the Snellius the expedition : XXV. Faviidae collected by Snellius expedition. I. The genus Favia Naturalis
Wijsman-Best, M..
Introduction The expedition of H.M. "Willebrord Snellius,, in the eastern Indonesian seas (1929-1930) brought home a large collection of corals. The biologist on board, Dr. H. Boschma, as well as the geologist Dr. Ph. H. Kuenen collected these specimens during low tide on the reefs or by way of dredging and diving. The greater part of the material comes from shallow waters (depths of 0.5 to 5 m). The use of diving apparatus allowed collecting at a depth of 2 to 15 m. Sometimes corals were dredged from depths of 30 m or more. The total coral material consists of more than 10.000 samples, about half of which are specimens of the genus Acropora. Although the material was sorted out and generally identified as to the genus, so far no study was made of any...

Biological results of the snellius expedition : XXVII. Faviidae collected by the snellius expedition. II. The genera favites, Goniastrea, Platygyra, Oulophyllia, Leptoria, Hydnophora and Caulastrea Naturalis
Wijsman-Best, M..
INTRODUCTION This paper forms the second part of the report dealing with the Faviidae collected during the Snellius Expedition. For the general introduction I refer to part I (Wijsman-Best, 1974). The genera dealt with in the present article, Favites, Goniastrea, Platygyra, Oulophyllia, Leptoria, Hydnophora and Caulastrea were with three exceptions collected at the same localities as the specimens of Favia. For the explanations of localities 1-17 I refer to article I. The additional three localities are (see map fig. 1): 18. Amboina (18 May 1830). By reef and shore collecting on 6th May some material was obtained at Wainitoe. From 2-8 May the mantri Erie accompanied Dr. P. H. Kuenen on his trip to the neighbouring island Haroekoe and collected animals on...

Indo-pacific coral species belonging to the subfamily Montastreinae Vaughan & Wells, 1943 (Scleractinea-Coelenterata) : Part I. The genera Montastrea and Plesiastrea Naturalis
Wijsman-Best, M..
INTRODUCTION The results of this study are based on several collections mainly from the Pacific Ocean (New Caledonia, Great Barrier Reef, Australia) but also from the Indian Ocean (Indonesian Archipelago, Seychelles, Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands) and the Red Sea. Apart from this material with the ecological data essentional in corals for a modern taxonomic approach, several other collections in different museums were examined in addition to the different type specimens as comparative material. Apart from the material from the Rijksmuseum of Natural History (RMNH) in Leiden and the Institute of Taxonomic Zoology (ITZ) in Amsterdam, specimens from the following museums and institutes were studied. British Museum of Natural History (BMNH), London;...
