Identifizierung von Bio-Milchviehbetriebstypen sowie deren Betriebs-, Herden- und Managementcharakteristika Organic Eprints
Ivemeyer, Silvia; Brinkmann, Jan; March, Solveig; Simantke, Christel; Winckler, Christoph; Knierim, Ute.
Organic dairy milk production is a growing sector in Germany. The sector varies between regions and individual farms due to topographical and structural differences, but very little statistical information is available in Germany about this variation. The aim of this study was to identify typical major farm types (MFT) of German organic dairy farms and to describe their farm, herd and management characteristics. Based on data from 204 organic dairy farms from previous studies with representative samples, four MFT were identified by cluster analysis and expert opinions. Cluster criteria were herd size, milk yield, region and housing system. 10-11 farms per MFT, in total 41 farms were interviewed with respect to their management by phone or during a farm...

Eutergesundheit in der ökologischen Milchviehhaltung – Einfluss von Laktatonsstadium und Laktationszahl auf die Behandlungsinzidenz klinischer Masttiden Organic Eprints
Brinkmann, Jan; March, Solveig; Höller, Barbara; Winckler, Christoph.
Mastitis is one of the most important diseases in organic dairy farming. Therefore, it was the aim of this study to investigate the influence of stage of lactation and parity on mastitis risk in organic dairy cows. 43 German organic farms with German Holstein cows were selected via a questionnaire. These farms are being visited approximately every three months since 2005. Minimum herd size is 30 cows, and annual milk yield averages 6,277 kg/cow (min=3,175; max=9,653). During the farm visits, mastitis cases and treatments were extracted from farm records and data were processed using InterHerd©. The mean mastitis (treatment) incidence was 22 cases/100 cow years, which is comparable to incidences in organic farms reported elsewhere. 19 mastitis cases/100 cow...

Lahmheitsprävalenz und deren Risikofaktoren bei ökologisch gehaltenen Zuchtsauen in Haltungsverfahren mit Auslauf Organic Eprints
March, Solveig; Brinkmann, Jan; Schwalm, Anja; Weißmann, Friedrich; Dippel, Sabine; Leeb, Christine; Winckler, Christoph.

Good animal health and welfare is an explicit goal of organic livestock farming, and will need continuous development and adjustment on the farms. Furthermore, the very different conditions in different regions of Europe calls for models that can be integrated into local practice and be relevant for each type of farming context. A European project with participants from seven countries have been established with the aim of developing principles for animal health and welfare planning in organic dairy farming, based on a process where knowledge about the status within a given herd will be included as background for taking decisions and planning future improvements. An important part of the planning process is communication with other farmers as well as...

Ökologische Legehennenhaltung in großen Herden: Spezifische Auslaufnutzung und Nährstoffeintrag Organic Eprints
Elbe, Ulrike; Roß, Antje; Steffens, Günter; Van den Weghe, Herman; Winckler, Christoph.
The aim of this study was to examine the excrement load in outdoor ranges due to the outdoor run use of free-range laying hens (organic farming system) to quantify the accumulation of nutrients in the soil. The number of hens using the run (flock of 4,500 hens) were recorded (digital photographs; scan sampling interval 10 min, 5 hours/d, 23 d; 7 to 10/2003) and sward protection grids, positioned at different distances (2 , 6, 17 m) from the barn were used to get the amount of excreta (number and weight of droppings). On average 9.8 % of the hens used the range out of which 69 % preferred the area close to the barn (0-17 m). Excretion rates per hen amounted to 12,4 g*hour, thus accounting for a share of 5 % of the total excrements of the flock. The...

Dairy health in German organic farming - an intervention study on lameness and the implementation of herd health plans Organic Eprints
March, Solveig; Brinkmann, Jan; Winckler, Christoph.
A pilot study carried out in 2002/2003 (50 farms) revealed that production diseases such as mastitis, lameness and metabolic disorders play a considerable role in german organic dairy farming. In a follow-up project, an intervention study on lameness is currrently being carried out in 43 cubicle housed Holstein Friesian herds. Farms are monitored at 3-months intervals for two years. The average baseline lameness prevalence was 26%. Preliminary findings suggest a beneficial effect of access to pasture during summer and improvements due to intervention measures (housing, management) taken in approximately half of the farms. In a third step, herd health plans with regard to mastitis, lameness, metabolic disorders, reproductive disorders and calf diseases will...

CorePig - Prävention ausgewählter Erkrankungen und Parasiten in biologischen Schweinebetrieben durch ein HACCP basiertes Management- und Überwachungssystem Organic Eprints
Dippel, Sabine; Leeb, Christine; Hagmüller, Werner; Winckler, Christoph.
The overall objective of the project CorePig is to promote animal health and welfare in organic pig herds in Europe. The variation in pig health between organic herds is likely to be caused by different management routines in the herds. To improve animal welfare it is therefore important to investigate the correlation between management and parasite/disease occurrence, and based on this, to develop a disease management tool applicable on farm. This will be achieved by carrying out the following three components: • To conduct an international knowledge synthesis for identifying needs for future research into disease and parasite prevention in organic pig production • To estimate risk factors for selected diseases and parasites in pigs in European organic...

Organic production is perceived by consumers as being superior in animal welfare and sustainability and the demand for organic pork products is slowly increasing. Within the past ten years a variety of husbandry and management systems have been developed across the EU, ranging from farms with pigs outdoors all year round using local breeds to farms with housed pigs having concrete outside runs and using conventional breeds (CorePIG, Rousing et al, 2011). So far, mainly clinical parameters have been used to describe the health situation on organic pig farms, identifying some key problems, such as weaning diarrhoea and piglet mortality. Organic pig production is - amongst others - characterised through a holistic approach based on the EU Regulation (EC) No...

Tiergesundheitspläne und Tiergesundheitsindikatoren aus Sicht ökologisch wirtschaftender MilchviehhalterInnen - erste Ergebnisse einer Pilotstudie in Deutschland Organic Eprints
Solveig, March; Brinkmann, Jan; Winckler, Christoph; Goeritz, Mareike; Oppermann, Rainer; Rahmann, Gerold.
In a pilot study on the implementation of herd health plans in organic dairy farms in Germany, 43 organic milk producers were interviewed about their opinion about this management tool to improve animal health. Preliminary results show that the farmers have nearly the same target values for indicators of animal health like experts and advisors. By contrast, on-farm data collection reveals discrepancies between these goals and the actual situation. Thus a systematic procedure by using herd health plans and a straightforward implementation of measures could improve animal health. However, it is important for the farmers to adjust the herd health plan and the advised measures individually.

IMPROVEMENT OF ANIMAL HEALTH INDICATORS IN GERMAN ORGANIC DAIRY FARMS THROUGH 'STABLE SCHOOLS' Organic Eprints
March, Solveig; Brinkmann, Jan; Winckler, Christoph.
It was the aim of a pilot study on the implementation of ‘stable schools’ in Germany (1) to initiate 4 regional stable schools focusing on animal health with in total 19 German organic dairy farms and to assess the farm health status using animal-based indicators as basic information for the stable schools, (2) to evaluate the implementation of measures and improvements of herd health within the three year project period and, (3) to assess the farmers’ perceptions regarding the stable school concept. A modified approach was used by providing the farmers with objectively assessed information on the health status of each participating farm. This paper reports on the implementation of measures as well as the improvement achieved due to the stable schools...

Welchen Einfluss hat der Weidegang auf die Gesundheit von Milchkühen? Erste Ergebnisse von Auswertungen umfangreicher Praxiserhebungen in der ökologischen Milchviehhaltung Organic Eprints
March, Solveig; Brinkmann, Jan; Müller, J.; Winckler, Christoph.
The effects of grassland management and grazing strategy on cow health in organic dairy farming in Germany have not yet been explored. On the basis of comprehensive data sets of 124 organic dairy farms generated within the Federal Organic Farming Scheme, the aims of this study were 1) to assess grassland management and pasture use, 2) to identify the grazing strategies and, 3) to investigate the effects of grazing on health and other welfare indicators of organic dairy cows in Germany. In this paper, we describe selected animal-based parameters for herd health and compare groups of farms with different grazing strategies. Farms using pasture especially for grazing had a lower lameness prevalence and less cows with dirty hind legs, but grazing strategy had...
