Taxonomical and ecological description of a species complex of zooplanktivorous and insectivorous cichlids from Lake Victoria Naturalis
Oijen, M.J.P. van; Witte, F..
The zooplanktivorous Haplochromis tanaos spec. nov., and the morphologically very similar but insectivorous Haplochromis thereuterion spec. nov., from Lake Victoria (East Africa) are described and compared to Haplochromis diplotaenia Regan & Trewavas, 1928, a similar species which is known only from the holotype. Intraspecific variation is described for both new species. Ecological data of the new species are compared to those of known zooplanktivores and insectivores from the Mwanza Gulf area. Both new species disappeared concurrently with the Nile perch (Lates) upsurge early in the 1980's. The recent occurrence of individuals closely resembling the new species, in a different habitat close to the original one, is analysed.

A redescription of Haplochromis labriformus (Nichols & LaMonte, 1938) Naturalis
Oijen, M.J.P. van; Witte, F..
The single cichlid fish from Lake Victoria on which Nichols & LaMonte (1938) based their new species Tilapia labriforma was re-examined. It turned out to be a haplochromine cichlid. The specimen is redescribed and compared to similar species from Lake Victoria.

Seven new species of detritivorous and phytoplanktivorous haplochromines from Lake Victoria Naturalis
Zeeuw, M.P. de; Mietes, M.; Niemantsverdriet, P.; Huurne, S. ter; Witte, F..
Seven new species of haplochromine cichlids from Lake Victoria are described. They comprise four detritivorous and three phytoplanktivorous species. Their affinities to other Lake Victoria haplochromines are discussed.

Taxonomy, ecology and fishery of Lake Victoria haplochromine trophic groups Naturalis
Witte, F.; Oijen, M.J.P van.
Based on ecological and morphological features, the 300 or more haplochromine cichlid species of Lake Victoria are classified into fifteen (sub)trophic groups. A key to the trophic groups, mainly based on external morphological characters, is presented. Of each trophic group a description is given comprising data on taxonomy, ecology and fishery. As far as possible data from the period before the Nile perch upsurge and from the present situation are compared. A list of described species classified into trophic groups is added.
