To date meiobenthic research remained a big white spot in the systematic-ecological work on Antarctic zoobenthos. Therefore the relative importance of the meiofauna (organisms within the size range of 38-1000µm) in the Antarctic benthic community has been assessed by a combined field ecology and experimental approach. This was done in two contrasting conditions, e.g. the deep sea and low subtidal, where as to the depth of the water column the benthic characteristics were, respectively, indirectly or directly related to primary production. Meiofauna from the intertidal zone of five European estuaries (Ems, Westerschelde, Somme, Gironde, Tagus) was investigated. Samples represented a cross section of various benthic habitats from near-freshwater to marine, from pure silts to fine-sandy bottoms. The meiobenthic community comprised everywhere a fauna strongly dominated by nematodes, with meiobenthic density increasing with increasing salinity. The Ems differed from the other estuaries due to the presence of a well developed community of Copepods, Gastrotrichs, large Ciliates and/or soft-shelled Foraminiferans in some sites. The meiobenthic fauna of the Westerschelde, a highly polluted and physically disturbed estuary in the south-west Netherlands, was investigated. Samples were taken in spring from six transects, including the intertidal, subtidal and channel area, and located along the salinity gradient. The samples were subdivided into slices to examine the vertical distribution of meiobenthos. Meiobenthos densities were higher in the intertidal than in most permanently submersed areas; the subtidal sites below 7 salinity were nearly devoid of meiobenthic life. The metazoan meiofauna in the region off Kapp Norvegia, Antarctica (Weddell Sea: 71°S, 12°W), was collected from depths between 211 and 2080m. Total meiofaunal abundance ranged from 815 to 5122 ind. per 10 cm² and total biomass from 126 to 966 µg dwt per 10 cm². Nematodes dominated the samples (range 83 to 97%) followed by harpacticoid copepods, polychaetes and kinorhynchs. A typical skewed length frequency distribution was obtained with most nematodes in the 0.4 to 0.6 mm size-class.
