MEASUREMENT AND EXPLANATION OF TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY IN MISSOURI HOG PRODUCTION AgEcon
Ben-Belhassen, Boubaker; Womack, Abner W..
The U.S. live hog production has undergone a significant structural change characterized by a trend toward larger operations. Experts argue that there is a cost advantage for larger farms due to industrialization and increased management intensity. One important element in production, mainly for industries with rapid consolidation, is technical efficiency which affects the firm's competitive position directly. This study uses a stochastic production frontier function and farm-level data to measure and explain technical efficiency in Missouri hog production. The study estimates the mean technical efficiency for farms in the sample at about 82 percent, implying that a large proportion of production (18%) is lost due to farm-specific inefficiencies. Further,...

LIVE HOG AND PORK IMPORTS: PAST AND PROJECTED CONSEQUENCES FOR THE U.S. PORK SECTOR AgEcon
Brandt, Jon A.; Young, Robert E., II; Alam, Shamsul; Womack, Abner W..
The U.S. pork sector is modeled to simulate the effects of alternative import levels on prices, production, consumption, farm receipts, and consumer expenditures. Over the 1983-1985 period, producers annually received $600 million less due to increasing imports than if imports had remained at the 1979-1982 average. Farm prices and slaughter were lower by $2.21 per hundredweight and .1 million head annually, respectively. Four simulations reflecting alternative import paths over the period 1986-1992 were examined. With lower imports (relative to current levels), production and farm prices rise significantly in the long run; consumers purchase less and pay more.

The Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) prepares a preliminary agricultural outlook on world agricultural production, consumption, and trade every fall. This is followed by an outside review, re-evaluation of projections, and completion of the final baseline in January. The FAPRI 2000 World Agricultural Outlook presents these final projections for world agricultural markets. A companion volume, the FAPRI 2000 U.S. Agricultural Outlook, presents the U.S. component of the baseline. FAPRI projections assume average weather patterns worldwide, existing policy, and policy commitments under current trade agreements. FAPRI projections do not include conjectures on potential policy changes, such as those resulting from the likely eastward...

Farm Level Comparison of H.R. 2646 and S. 1731 AgEcon
Richardson, James W.; Outlaw, Joe L.; Anderson, David P.; Schumann, Keith D.; Feldman, Paul A.; Sartwelle, James D., III; Gill, Chope; Kaman, Paul; Houston, Christy M.; Womack, Abner W..
The provisions in the House (H.R. 2646) and Senate (S. 1731) farm bills are analyzed with respect to their impacts on 94 representative crop, livestock, and dairy farms. The analysis incorporates both historical price and production risk for the farms so the “safety net” aspects of the bills can be compared. Representative crop livestock and dairy farms for major production regions across the county are analyzed. Information to describe and simulate these farms comes from a panel of farmers in each local area. The farm panels are reconvened frequently to update their farm’s data. The representative farm data base has been used for policy analysis for more than 15 years. The simulation model used for the analysis was developed by AFPC scientists.

SETTING THE STAGE: AMERICAN AGRICULTURE TODAY AND WHAT WE CAN EXPECT OVER THE NEXT 5 TO 10 YEARS AgEcon
Womack, Abner W..
According to estimates made by the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute in March of 1999, there are several macro factors that will significantly impact U.S. and global agriculture over the next decade. Factors leading to near-term price pressure are contrasted with likely implications for the longer term. In general, the longer run estimated consequences for global agriculture are more positive, but with the strong likelihood of low price pressure lingering over the next two to three years.

The FAPRI 2006 U.S. and World Agricultural Outlook presents projections of world agricultural production, consumption, and trade under average weather patterns, existing farm policy, and policy commitments under current trade agreements and custom unions. Despite continued high energy prices, world economic growth is expected to remain strong in the coming decade, above 3% per annum. Other major drivers of the 2006 baseline include new bio-energy policies in several large countries, EU sugar policy reform, sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) shocks in livestock and poultry markets, and movements in the exchange rate.
