The evolution of value-added centers at land-grant universities, along with the recent development of numerous Ag Innovation Centers, has been viewed as a sign of a shifting emphasis to value-added agriculture research and technical assistance efforts. The entities that fund these centers, be they state or federal government, have a vested interest in the economic impacts of these centers. However, evaluating the efforts of a public good is not always an easy task. An economic impact study of the Oklahoma Food and Agricultural Products Research and Technology Center was conducted to analyze the impact of the firms the Center has assisted and the impact of services provided by the Center. The economic impact of the firms assisted was calculated using an IMPLAN model.

Entrepreneurial Communities in Rural Oklahoma AgEcon

This paper studies “entrepreneurial communities” using both quantitative and qualitative data from the state of Oklahoma. Household-level survey data and community-specific characteristics are used to determine what factors affect whether a rural community operates in an entrepreneurial manner. Case studies from successful rural communities provide a more qualitative viewpoint of the factors that lead to entrepreneurial activity.

This paper addresses the possible components of a rural/community development Extension program. Issues such as subject matter selection, research base, and linkages with outside organizations are discussed. The role of rural/community development in an agricultural economics academic setting is analyzed. Recommendations for successful efforts are presented.

A Retail Sales / Sales Tax Paradox AgEcon

Small communities experiencing slow to negative growth sometimes increase their local sales tax rate in order to maintain or expand public services. A cross-sectional, time series model is used to investigate possible unintended consequences. Negative elasticities are found for tax rates above the norm, resulting in reduced retail trade.
