EFFECTS OF FARMERS' RISK ATTITUDES AND PERSONALITY TYPES ON PRODUCTION AND MARKETING DECISIONS AgEcon
Xu, Pei; Alexander, Corinne E.; Patrick, George F.; Musser, Wesley N..
Producers' risk perceptions, as well as their empirical measurement, have been an on-going concern for agricultural economists. Identification and categorization of producers' risk attitudes is important in both research and extension contexts. This study explores some alternative measures of farmers' attitudes and their relationships with observed producer behavior. The effect of farmers' personality types, as derived from the Myers-Briggs personality type indicator test, on marketing behavior is also explored. There were positive and statistically significant correlations of producers' risk attitudes in various areas of the farm business. However, there are also some differences in producers' willingness to risk, especially in the finance area....

The Effectiveness of Facilitated Business-to-Business Word-of Mouth Marketing Strategies on Target Participants’ Information Sharing Behavior AgEcon
Xu, Pei; Fulton, Joan R.; Alexander, Corinne E.; Akridge, Jay T..
This study examines the impact of facilitated business-to-business (B2B) word-of-mouth (WOM) on participants' information transmission decisions. We also examine characteristics of WOM participants and determine the types of participants who spread information. For an expendable crop input, the most important factor in determining whether producers share WOM initiative information with peers is how often they are asked for advice by their peers. In contrast, for an expendable companion animal product the most important factor in determining whether veterinarians share WOM initiative information with peers is whether they...

EFFECTS OF FIRM-SPECIFIC FACTORS ON R&D EXPENDITURES OF AGRIBUSINESS COMPANIES AgEcon
Roucan-Kane, Maud; Ubilava, David; Xu, Pei.
The objective of this paper is to determine how the firm's infrastructure, the financial characteristics of a company (net income, sales), and the organizational structure (number of acquisitions, age of establishment of the firm) affect R&D investments in the agricultural sector. We use data for companies under the SIC codes for agricultural chemicals, and crop planning and protection. The results based on analysis of 69 observations of 12 firms revealed that firm's financial and organizational infrastructure does affect its R&D expenditures. Older and larger firms tend to spend more on R&D. During the last 17 years the R&D expenditures with respect to the sales of the company have been reduced. Finally, contrary to the expectations,...
