Variations in the near-bottom flow speed of Iceland-Scotland Overflow Water (ISOW) are documented in a 230-year-long deep-sea sediment record from the eastern flank of Reykjanes Ridge in the subpolar North Atlantic at (sub) decadal time scales. For recent decades, the ISOW palaeocurrent reconstructions show similarities with observational hydrographic data. Furthermore, recent ISOW flow changes fall mostly within the range of its variability of the past 230 years. The record also reveals a hitherto unrecognized coupling of deep flow speeds in the subpolar North Atlantic with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index, with more (less) vigorous ISOW flow during negative (positive) phases of the NAO. Composition of freshwater in the spring of 2014 on the southern Labrador shelf and slope ArchiMer

The Labrador Current is an important conduit of freshwater from the Arctic to the interior North Atlantic subpolar gyre. Here, we investigate the spatial variability of the freshwater sources over the southern Labrador shelf and slope during May-June 2014. Using measurements of seawater properties such as temperature, salinity, nutrients and oxygen isotopic composition, we estimate the respective contributions of saline water of Atlantic and Pacific origins, of brines released during sea ice formation, and of freshwater from sea ice melt and meteoric water origins. Sources and distribution of fresh water around Cape Farewell in 2014 ArchiMer

We investigate the origin of freshwater on the shelves near Cape Farewell (south Greenland) using sections of three hydrographic cruises in May (HUD2014007) and June 2014 (JR302 and Geovide) 2014. We partition the freshwater between meteoric water sources and sea ice melt or brine formation using the δ18O of sea water. The sections illustrate the presence of the East Greenland Coastal Current (EGCC) close to shore east of Cape Farewell. West of Cape Farewell, it partially joins the shelf break, with a weaker near‐surface remnant of the EGCC observed on the shelf southwest and west of Cape Farewell.
