Methane fluxes from waterlogged and drained Histosols of highland areas Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Rachwal,Marcos Fernando Glück; Zanatta,Josiléia Acordi; Dieckow,Jeferson; Denega,Genuir Luis; Curcio,Gustavo Ribas; Bayer,Cimélio.
Soil can be either source or sink of methane (CH4), depending on the balance between methanogenesis and methanotrophy, which are determined by pedological, climatic and management factors. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of drainage of a highland Haplic Histosol on CH4 fluxes. Field research was carried out in Ponta Grossa (Paraná, Brazil) based on the measurement of CH4 fluxes by the static chamber method in natural and drained Histosol, over one year (17 sampling events). The natural Histosol showed net CH4 eflux, with rates varying from 238 µg m-2 h-1 CH4, in cool/cold periods, to 2,850 µg m-2 h-1 CH4, in warm/hot periods, resulting a cumulative emission of 116 kg ha-1 yr-1 CH4. In the opposite, the drained Histosol showed net...

Postharvest nitrous oxide emissions from a subtropical oxisol as influenced by summer crop residues and their management Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Escobar,Luisa Fernanda; Amado,Telmo Jorge Carneiro; Bayer,Cimélio; Chavez,Luis Fernando; Zanatta,Josiléia Acordi; Fiorin,Jackson Ernani.
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is the most important non-CO2 greenhouse gas and soil management systems should be evaluated for their N2O mitigation potential. This research evaluated a long-term (22 years) experiment testing the effect of soil management systems on N2O emissions in the postharvest period (autumn) from a subtropical Rhodic Hapludox at the research center FUNDACEP, in Cruz Alta, state of Rio Grande do Sul. Three treatments were evaluated, one under conventional tillage with soybean residues (CTsoybean) and two under no-tillage with soybean (NTsoybean) and maize residues (NTmaize). N2O emissions were measured eight times within 24 days (May 2007) using closed static chambers. Gas flows were obtained based on the relations between gas concentrations in...

Mitigation of methane and nitrous oxide emissions from flood-irrigated rice by no incorporation of winter crop residues into the soil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Zschornack,Tiago; Bayer,Cimélio; Zanatta,Josiléia Acordi; Vieira,Frederico Costa Beber; Anghinoni,Ibanor.
Winter cover crops are sources of C and N in flooded rice production systems, but very little is known about the effect of crop residue management and quality on soil methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. This study was conducted in pots in a greenhouse to evaluate the influence of crop residue management (incorporated into the soil or left on the soil surface) and the type of cover-crop residues (ryegrass and serradella) on CH4 and N2O emissions from a flooded Albaqualf soil cultivated with rice (Oryza sativa L.). The closed chamber technique was used for air sampling and the CH4 and N2O concentrations were analyzed by gas chromatography. Soil solution was sampled at two soil depths (2 and 20 cm), simultaneously to air sampling, and the...

Nitrous oxide and methane fluxes in south Brazilian gleysol as affected by nitrogen fertilizers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Zanatta,Josiléia Acordi; Bayer,Cimélio; Vieira,Frederico C.B.; Gomes,Juliana; Tomazi,Michely.
Nitrogen fertilizers increase the nitrous oxide (N2O) emission and can reduce the methane (CH4) oxidation from agricultural soils. However, the magnitude of this effect is unknown in Southern Brazilian edaphoclimatic conditions, as well as the potential of different sources of mineral N fertilizers in such an effect. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different mineral N sources (urea, ammonium sulphate, calcium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, Uran, controlled- release N fertilizer, and urea with urease inhibitor) on N2O and CH4 fluxes from Gleysol in the South of Brazil (Porto Alegre, RS), in comparison to a control treatment without a N application. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block with three replications, and the N...

Carbon indices to assess quality of management systems in a Subtropical Acrisol Scientia Agricola
Zanatta,Josiléia Acordi; Vieira,Frederico Costa Beber; Briedis,Clever; Dieckow,Jeferson; Bayer,Cimélio.
ABSTRACT: Management systems to improve soil quality are essential for agricultural and environmental sustainability. We assessed the quality of soil management systems applied to a subtropical Acrisol in terms of the carbon management index (CMI), the stratification ratio for total organic carbon (SR-TOC) and light fraction of organic matter (SR-LF). In addition, we examined their relationship to chemical, physical and biological soil quality indicators, as well as to maize yield. The study was conducted on a long-term experiment (18 years) in southern Brazil involving two different systems [no tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT)], two cropping systems [black oat/maize (O/M) and black oat + vetch/maize + cowpea (OV/MC)] and two nitrogen fertilizer...
