Última LEGISLATIVE AND INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK FOR THE FOOD SAFETY CONTROL OF LIVE ANIMALS IN CHINA AgEcon Zhang, Xiaoyong; van den Roest, Joop. In 2002, both China and the EU suffered from a trade dispute over animal products. The aim of the report is to document this framework, in order to make a constructive contribution towards bridging the gap of understanding and accessibility of the countries' procedures in particular and of their trade relations in general. This report illustrates how the Chinese legal and institutional system differs from that in the EU. Laws, administrative documents and regulations are all part of the Chinese legal system and have an equally binding force. The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and the General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) are the two most important institutions monitoring food safety in China. This study describes how governance mechanisms were formed that link small-scale apple farmers in China with export markets. These institutional innovations have improved the efficiency of price transmission and generated higher profit margins for various actors in the supply chain, in particular for small-scale farmers. Chinese apple exports are highly coordinated through ongoing long term loyal network relationships and vertical integration. Relevant policy implications and further challenges are discussed in the conclusion. This study identified and validated key constructs underlying supply chain management research: contract, trust and environment. In total, 22 items were retained to measure six dimensions for the three core concepts. Using data from a sample of Chinese vegetable and fruit farmers, we found empirical support for a complementary relationships between contract and trust. Moreover, our results also indicated a positive relationship between environmental uncertainty and the degree of using contracts.
