COMMUNITY-BUSINESS MATCHING: A NEW MODEL FOR RURAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AgEcon
Buescher, Michael; Halbrendt, Catherine K.; Sullivan, Pauline; Zheng, Yi.
Identifying target industry sectors for community economic development is a complex problem. The Community-Business Matching (CBM) Model is a tool that assists in identifying desirable industry sectors for sustainable economic development. The framework of the model is based on two measures, "Desirability" and "Compatibility", between a community and industry sectors. A case study of two Vermont communities will be presented.

IDENTIFYING SUSTAINABLE BUSINESSES FOR COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AgEcon
Halbrendt, Catherine K.; Zheng, Yi; Lucas, Marilyn T..
CBM was used to set economic development priorities and identify sustainable businesses for Enosburg Falls, Vermont. A modified CBM corrected limitations found in the first study. Results show that business in Depository and Non-depository financial institutions, dairy processing, and industrial machinery & equipment sectors are desirable and compatible for Enosburg Falls to target.

CHANGES IN INCOME AND WELFARE DISTRIBUTION IN URBAN CHINA AND IMPLICATIONS FOR FOOD CONSUMPTION AND TRADE AgEcon
Wang, Qingbin; Shi, Guanming; Zheng, Yi.
While China’'s economic reform has brought about significant economic growth, there is a considerable debate about the impact of such market-oriented reform on income and welfare distributions. This paper examines the changes in income and welfare distributions in urban China from 1981 to 1998 and discusses implications for China’'s food consumption patterns and trade behavior. While the Lorenz curves estimated using Kakwani’'s interpolation method indicate that the level of income inequality in urban China has increased significantly since 1981, welfare comparisons based on generalized Lorenz curves suggest that the rise in real average income has more than compensated for the increase in inequality and has therefore brought about continuous improvement...

Semiparametric Estimation of Consumer Demand Systems with Micro Data AgEcon
Sam, Abdoul G.; Zheng, Yi.
This article proposes a semiparametric two-step procedure for estimating a censored consumer demand system with micro data. The semiparametric estimator considered in the first step is suggested by Klein and Spady (1993). This estimator, used as a counterpart of the probit estimator in a conventional two-step model, does not make any distributional assumptions about the disturbances and so is exempt from model misspecification and plausible heteroscedasticity. In the second step, we motivate the choice of the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) as an economic representation of consumers' demand behavior. Implementing our proposed semiparametric two-step procedure as well as Shonkwiler and Yen (1999)'s two-step model to a household meat consumption dataset...
