Global demand for feed, especially cereal feed, is expected to increase in the decades to come. At the global level, demand for cereal feed will be met by the supply. There are, however, disparities between regions. As a result of strong livestock industry development, the Asian region as a whole will have a shortage of cereal feed and will become a major cereal feed importer. This paper examines existing projections of feed demand and supply in the Asian region. It also sheds light on the implications of the feed demand and the livestock industry development in the Asian region for the Australian rural industries. |

The idea of food security has been circulating for a long time and the right to adequate food and to be free from hunger has been repeatedly affirmed and reaffirmed in a number of documents adopted by the United Nations. Despite the enormous efforts in the past decades by various international organisations, government and non-government organisations, unfortunately, today there are still more than 800 million people throughout the world, most of them in developing countries, who do not have enough food to meet their basic nutritional needs. Among the 800 million, more than 30 percent are from India and China. It is these poor people who have great difficulty in obtaining an adequate food for basic human requirements and who need to be helped by the public... |

The livestock industry in China has undergone massive changes since the liberalisation of markets started in 1985. The beef sector is no exception to this transition with production and consumption increasing faster than all other meats in the last two decades. The number of cattle has nearly doubled since 1980 to be around 141.6 million in 2005 and beef production has increased at a much faster rate than the cattle inventory. As the third largest beef producing country in the world, China exports and imports beef cattle. The emerging Chinese market has generally been seen as an opportunity for the Australian red meat industry. However, given the rate of increase in output, China may also provide a threat. With this in mind, understanding the current beef... |

Demand for livestock products in the past three decades has increased rapidly, especially in developing countries. This increase has resulted in, and will continue to cause, increased demand for livestock feed. This paper examines existing projections of global feed demand and supply with an emphasis on China. It first presents the emerging trends in demand for feed and food, followed by global perspectives of feed demand and supply. It then highlights the challenges facing future farming in its endeavour to meet the increasing demand for feed. Finally, the paper sheds light on whether the livestock revolution will offer much opportunity to farmers, especially small farmers in the developing countries and those at home in Australia. |

In the 1980s and early 1990s, wheat imports accounted for about four-fifths of China's import of cereals, and imported wheat accounts for about 30 percent of wheat supply. As a result of the many recent developments in Chinese government’s policy on wheat production and marketing as well as China’s WTO accession negotiations, how the Chinese wheat market will evolve presents an interesting and important area for policy makers and major wheat trading companies both within and outside China. In this paper, we highlight recent changes in China's wheat production and consumption patterns and marketing arrangements. We then, by taking into account of likely government policy scenarios, analyse implications of such changes on wheat market development in China... |
