Today, consumer awareness on the healthiness of their foodstuff increases. The main focus is on secondary metabolites and antioxidants. Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. convar. botrytis Alef. var. italica Plenck) has many compounds beneficial for human health, like Vitamin C, Carotionoids or Anthocyanins. To investigate these compounds two techniques are used in this study which are non-destructive sensor measurements (Multiplex®) to determine the value of anthocyanins (ANTH_RG) and flavonols (FLAV) and measurements of the antioxidant potential (water- (ACW) and lipid- (ACL) soluble antioxidants) on the basis of chemoluminescence. Agrophotovoltaik – Auswirkungen auf Mikroklima und landwirtschaftliche Erträge Organic Eprints

Agrophotovoltaik (APV) ermöglicht die simultane Produktion von Nahrungsmitteln und Strom auf derselben Fläche, indem die Solarmodule etwa sechs Meter über der landwirtschaftlichen Fläche montiert sind. In der vorliegenden Studie wurden die Auswirkungen von APV auf die ökologische Produktion von Kleegras und Winterweizen sowie verschiedene mikroklimatische Parameter untersucht. Infolge veränderter mikroklimatischer Bedingungen und einer Reduktion der photosynthetisch aktiven Strahlung, kam es zu einer Abnahme der landwirtschaftlichen Erträge.

Entwicklung samenfester Brokkoli-Genotypen (Brassica oleracea convar. Botrytis var. Italica): Vergleich physikalischer und sensorischer Merkmalsausprägungen Organic Eprints

This study compared physical and sensory quality traits of three breeding lines and one hybrid of organic broccoli to find suitable open pollinating variety with high potential for marketability. An Instron texture analyzer was used to measure the firmness of the texture. Descriptive and hedonic tests were done to assess sensory quality. The evaluation of the genotypes by the panelists showed a trend to rank the lines as “good” in respect to their sensory properties and their outer appearance. CHE-MIC-31 was the firmest open pollinating genotype. Results of this study showed that this breeding line has the potential for marketability because of it’s superior physical and sensory attributes.

Open Pollinated Broccoli Genotypes: Agronomic Parameters and Sensory Attributes Organic Eprints

Breeding of open pollinated (OP) varieties for organic farming gains further importance as varieties created by breeding techniques like CMS-hybridisation and cell fusion are no longer accepted by several organic farming associations. For broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica), the availability of OP varieties is very limited and the ones available are often not suitable for commercial crop production. Screening von Senf-Genotypen zur Körnernutzung im ökologischen Anbau in Mitteleuropa Organic Eprints

Information is rare about mustard (Sinapis alba, Brassica nigra, B. juncea) varieties and their characteristics for a suitable performance under organic conditions. 30 accessions were grown at the organic Research Station Kleinhohenheim in SW Germany in the year 2011. Highest grain yield was obtained by S. alba (10.5 g/plant) which was about four times the yield of B. nigra, and ten times the yield of B. juncea, mainly because of higher thousand kernel mass and high number of pods. B nigra and B. juncea were heavily damaged by pests so that only S. alba seems a suitable mustard species for German organic farming at the moment.

After commercial cropping of lentils (Lens culinaris) expired in Germany 50 years ago, a revival was observed on a small regional scale. Several field trials aimed at the development of lentil cropping systems to make lentils a more popular crop in German organic farming. One of the trials was set up to identify suitable companion crops and cropping ratios for lentils in mixed cropping systems. Suitable cropping systems in terms of yield (up to 1.8 t ha-1) were combinations with barley (Hordeum vulgare), wheat (Triticum aestivum) and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) in a ratio of 180 : 60 seeds ha-1 (lentil:companion crop), and with wheat or oats (Avena sativa, 1 : 3) in terms of lodging. Ziel des Projektes war, Zuchtpopulationen bzw. traditionelle, offen blühende Brokkoli-Sorten (keine Hybriden bzw. CMS-Hybriden) speziell für den Ökologischen Landbau zu prüfen. Wichtige Eigenschaften waren dabei Ertragssicherheit, Einheitlichkeit, enges Erntefenster, Festigkeit der Blume sowie hohe Gehalte an sekundären, bioaktiven Inhaltsstoffen, insbesondere von Glucosinolaten. Um eine schnelle und kostengünstige Möglichkeit zum Screening von bioaktiven Inhaltsstoffen zu entwickeln, die für den On-Farm-Einsatz geeignet ist, wurde zudem ein zerstörungsfrei arbeitendes Sensortool getestet. The aim of our research was to compare the N fertilizer value of different clover-grass (CG) based fertilizers. A pot trial was set up with 8 treatments with Lolium perenne: fresh CG, ensiled CG, compost from CG, solid manure and liquid manure from dairy cows fed with CG, biogas digestate, an unfertilized and a mineral fertilizer control. Our hypothesis was that compared to composting, and to other treatments (e.g. silage) biogas digestates allow for a more efficient N fertilization due to a lower C/N ratio and a higher share of NH4 +. Die Dauer von der Pflanzung der Zucchinipflanze (Cucurbita pepo L.) bis zu deren Bildung der ersten pistillaten Blüte und schließlich Frucht variiert je nach Umwelt. In diesem Experiment wurden die Tage von der Pflanzung bis zum Beginn der ersten pistillaten Blüte sowie die Bildung der ersten Frucht von zwei verschiedenen Zucchini-Genotypen unter biologischen Anbaubedingungen ausgewertet. Therefore, meeting crop nutrient demands and maintaining long-term sustainability in these systems is highly challenging. To gain insight in current practices this study assessed fertilization strategies and nutrient flows of ten organic horticultural farms (22 greenhouses and polytunnels) in Southwest Germany belonging to the two organic farming associations Bioland and Demeter (biodynamic) for a cropping period of three years. Rote Beete (Beta vulgaris L. ssp. vulgaris) hat einen hohen Nährwert und gewinnt deshalb immer mehr an Bedeutung in der Lebensmittelindustrie, insbesondere zur Saftherstellung, Farbstoffgewinnung oder auch als vorgekochte Halbfertigware. In dieser Studie wurden vier samenfeste Sorten (Formanova, Bolivar, Robuschka und Ronjana) und eine F1-Hybridsorte (Boro F1) hinsichtlich ihrer Brixwerte, Nitrat- und Betalaingehalte miteinander verglichen. Ökoloogisch wirtschaftende Gartenbaubetriebe wirtschaften nutzen vor allem im geschützen Anbau oft große Mengen an externen Inputs als Grunddünger (Kompost oder Wirtschaftsdeünder) und Ergänzungsdünger (z.B. organische Handelsdünger wie Federmehle oder Produkte aus der Lebensmittelverarbeitung. Der Einsatz dieser Düngemittel ist über die EU-Ökoverordnung(834/2007 und 889/2008) geregelt. Bisher ist wenige über die Düngestrategien ökologischer Gartenbaubetriebe im Unterglasanbau bekannt, es fehlen beispielsweise Informationen zum Einfluss des Düngemamangements auf Nährstoffbilanzen und den Status an pflanzenverfügbaren Nährstoffen im Boden. Fertilizer value and nitrogen transfer efficiencies with clover-grass ley biomass based fertilizers Organic Eprints

In temperate regions, legume-based green manures are a key element of organic rotations. However, specialized farms lack sufficient mobile organic fertilizers. To gain a better understanding of the N flows and the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizer value of different clover-grass-based fertilizers (biogas digestate, compost, silage and fresh clover-grass obtained from clover grass ley biomass), we assessed their fertilizer value. Close seeding of field beans (Vicia faba) has been regarded for several years as an option in organic agriculture for the short-term introduction of nitrogen into production systems. At the same time faba bean potentially supplies nitrogen (N) to crops and soil by N2 fixation and nitrogen release when crop biomass is finally mulched. The main objective of this project was to investigate and develop a method of N-supply to meet the demand of broccoli using organic N-sources. Based on the results it can be stated that yield of broccoli significantly increased in the treatment intensive legume cropping plus fertilizer when compared to an intensive legume cropping without horngrist. Die Umstellung vom Pflug auf eine reduzierte Bodenbearbeitung wird als Möglichkeit zur Minderung des Klimawandels im Zusammenhang mit einer erhöhten Humusanreicherung diskutiert. Ob reduzierte Bodenbearbeitungssysteme im biologischen Landbau zu einer erhöhten Lachgas-Entwicklung (N2O) führen, wurde bisher nur wenig beleuchtet. Im Langzeit-Bodenbearbeitungsversuch des FiBL in Frick wurden daher N2O-Emissionen über zwei Jahre hinweg und die Humusvorräte dreizehn Jahre nach Versuchsbeginn bis in eine Tiefe von 50 cm gemessen und mit weiteren mitteleuropäischen Studien verglichen.
