Oviposition behavior of Zabrotes subfasciatus females (Coleoptera, Bruchidae) under conditions of host deprivation Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Sperandio,Luzia Aparecida A.; Zucoloto,Fernando Sérgio.
Oviposition of Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman, 1833) on Phaseolus vulgaris (Linnaeus, 1753) was studied immediately after emergence of the adults throughout the females life and in situations of host deprivation lasting for 1 to 10 days. The number of eggs laid daily, longevity, duration of oviposition and distribution of eggs per grain were studied. The number of eggs laid per day varied significantly, with the oviposition peak in the presence of the host (control group) occurring between day 2 and day 5 of oviposition. In the absence of the host, a shift in the oviposition peak to the first day after deprivation was observed, except for the group deprived for one day which showed a peak between days 1 and 4 after introduction of the host. The...

Influence of quantities of brewer yeast on the performance of Anastrepha obliqua wild females (Diptera, Tephritidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Cresoni-Pereira,Carla; Zucoloto,Fernando Sérgio.
Using artificial solid diets, experiments were performed with Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart, 1835) wild females in order to verify the influence of different quantities of brewer yeast on the performance and compensation behavior to unbalanced diets ingestion. The observed parameters were egg production, ingestion, diet efficiency and survival in the reproductive phase. Results indicated that there was no compensatory ingestion to different quantities of yeast and that the diet with 12.5g of yeast provided the best performance. The absence of compensatory ingestion is discussed based on the yeast phagostimulation and on the costs involved in solid diets ingestion. The relation between the analyzed parameters and the protein quantities in the diet were...

Effects of intraspecific competition and food deprivation on the immature phase of Ascia monuste orseis (Lepidoptera, Pieridae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Barros-Bellanda,Helen C. H.; Zucoloto,Fernando Sérgio.
The effect of intraspecific competition for food on larvae and of food deprivation for 24 h on 2nd and 4th instars of Ascia monuste orseis (Godart, 1819) was investigated. Intraspecific competition for food during the immature phase leads to long pupation time, high larval mortality, reduced adult weight, and reduced number of eggs per female. In food deprivation experiments, the major differences in A. monuste orseis performance were long pupation time in the group that was deprived during the 2nd instar; and a negative effect on reproduction in the group that was deprived during the 4th instar, with reduced adult weight. Both food deprived periods tested are critical, and deprivation during the 2nd instar seems to have an effect as drastic as during the...

Influence of male nutritional conditions on the performance and alimentary selection of wild females of Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart)(Diptera, Tephritidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Cresoni-Pereira,Carla; Zucoloto,Fernando Sérgio.
Influence of male nutritional conditions on the performance and alimentary selection of wild females of Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) (Diptera, Tephritidae). The behavior of A. obliqua females is regulated by endogenous and exogenous factors and among these the presence of males. Experiments were carried out to investigate whether the presence of males and their nutritional condition may affect the behavior of self-selection feeding and the performance of A. obliqua females. Females were sorted in groups containing yeast-deprived females and males, and non-yeast-deprived females and males. The females were maintained apart from the males by a transparent plastic screen. Several yeast and sucrose combinations were offered to the females in a single diet...

Oviposition behavior and performance aspects of Ascia monuste (Godart, 1919) (Lepidoptera, Pieridae) on kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Catta-Preta,Patrícia Diniz; Zucoloto,Fernando Sérgio.
Host part selection by ovipositing females of Ascia monuste (Godart, 1919) (Lepidoptera, Pieridae) on kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) was determined in greenhouse and field. Performance of offspring (larval period, efficiency of food utilization, number of eggs/female and others) was investigated under laboratory conditions. In the field, the number of A. monuste egg clutches on the apical and medium parts of kale leaves was greater than on the basal part. In greenhouse, A. monuste exhibited a strong preference for the apical part of kale leaves for ovipositing. The best results on food utilization indices, pupal mass and female wing size were obtained with the leaf apical part. This part of kale leaves exhibited the highest nitrogen and protein...

Estudos de alguns aspectos da alimentação em Ascia monuste Godart (Lepidoptera, Pieridae) Zoologia
Felipe,Maria Cecília; Zucoloto,Fernando Sérgio.
Six kinds of crucifer (broccoli, cabbage, califlower, kale, mustard and rugula) were tested, as food, for larvae od Ascia monuste. The best results were obtained eith califlower, broccoli, rugula and kale. Four sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose and maltose) were tested to know their influence on the number of oviposition in female of Ascia monuste. The best results were obtained with fructose, glucose and sucrose.

Oviposition preference and larval performance in Ceratitis capitata (Díptera, Tephritidae) Zoologia
Joachim-Bravo,Iara Sordi; Zucoloto,Fernando Sérgio.
Experiments concerning oviposition preference were carried out on Ceratitis capitata to determine whether females are able to preferentially oviposit on natural hosts in which the larvae develop better. The results indicated that the females do not preferentially oviposit on hosts of better nutritive value for the larvae.

Efeitos das misturas de alguns alimentos na produção de óvulos em Anastrepha obliqua (Diptera, Tephritidae) Zoologia
Message,Creusa Maria; Zucoloto,Fernando Sérgio.
Effect of mixtures of some foods on egg production in the fruit fly Anastrepha obliqua. Several diets based on mixtures of different foods (brewer's yeast Boneg, wheat germ Boneg and gevral Lederle) were tested for their effect on egg production in Anastrepha obliqua. The best results were obtained with the mixture of brewer's yeast and wheat germ.

Nutritive value of diets with different carbohydrates for adult Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) (Diptera, Tephritidae) Zoologia
Fontellas,Tânia Mara de Lima; Zucoloto,Fernando Sérgio.
Adult Tephritidae, especially of the genus Anastrepha (Schiner, 1868), have been observed to feed on a wide variety of natural diets. The fruit on which they feed, in general, are rich in sugar content, chiefly glucose, frutose and sucrose, which are also the sugars that those insects utilise better. Neither the behavioural mechanisms, nor the physiological ones, that control food selection by insects, are well known. Because some of those aspects are not known for the species Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart, 1835) either, and in order to understand their biology better, three experiments were conducted. In the first experiment, it was checked whether there was a difference in metabolic profit by those insects, when fed the carbohydrates more frequently found...

Obtenção de uma dieta artificial para Bradysia hygida (Diptera, Sciaridae) Zoologia
Francisco,Angelo de Lima; Zucoloto,Fernando Sérgio.
Some artificial diets were tested and their efficiency assessed from percentage of pupation and emergence, time to emergence, pupal weight, ovary development and maintenance of generation. The best results were obtained with a yeast and starch basal diet. The other products tested were: wheat germ, soybean, fish flour, blood flour and meat flour.
