Samenfeste Sorten oder Hybriden - Anbauvergleich von Möhren unter den Verhältnissen des Ökologischen Landbaus Organic Eprints
Fleck, M.; Sikora, F.; Gränzdörffer, M.; Rohmund, C.; Fölsch, E.; von Fragstein, P.; Heß, J..
A field trial with carrots was carried out in 1998 at two sites in Hesse (North: loamy soil in Neu-Eichenberg; East: sandy soil in Queck) to compare 6 open pollinating and 6 F1 hybrids under an Organic Farming regime. Characteristics of cultivation, harvest, quality, and longevity were measured. Of the parameters of cultivation and harvest the hybrids showed a more intensive foliage growth, higher marketable yields (plus 29 and 25%), and more homogeneous taproots than the open pollinating cultivars. Picture forming methods clearly separated the samples into the two groups of breeding methods. The open pollinating cultivars were characterized by higher degrees of form intensity and ripeness and a stable vitality. The hybrids of the sandy site had a better...

Fleck, M.; von Fragstein, P.; Fleckenstein, J.; Haneklaus, S.; Hagel, I..

DO LIVING MULCH BASED VEGETABLE CROPPING SYSTEMS YIELD SIMILARLY TO THE SOLE ONES? Organic Eprints
Canali, S.; Campanelli, G.; Bavec, F.; von Fragstein, P.; Leteo, F.; Jocop, M.; Kristensen, H.L..
Ecological services may be exploited by use of living mulches in intercropping systems for production of vegetable crops. But may high yields be attained in intercropping systems for production of resource demanding crops such as cauliflower? In the frame of the InterVeg (Core Organic II) project, four field experiments were carried out in IT, SLO, DE and DK in order to study the effect of the living mulch introduction in cauliflower based cropping systems on crop yield and yield quality. The preliminary results, obtained after the first year project, showed yield and produces quality equal to those obtained in the sole cropping system if the system is properly managed (i.e. LM is late sown or its growth is controlled by root pruning).

This volume contains proposals for criteria for evaluation of plant protection products, fertilisers and soil conditioners1 to be used in organic agriculture. These ideas were developed in the course of the European Union (EU) Concerted Action project ‘ORGANIC INPUTS EVALUATION’ (QLK5-CT-2002-02565). For more information on this project see the end of this volume or visit the project website www.organicinputs.org. The documents in this volume are proposals elaborated by the project consortium and external experts. They were discussed with a broader audience at a public conference held in Brussels on October 13, 2005, and have been amended accordingly. Our proposals also include a “criteria matrix”, which is in Microsoft Excel format, and therefore stands...

EFFECT OF LIVING MULCH MANAGEMENT ON NITROGEN DYNAMICS IN THE SOIL – PLANT SYSTEM OF CAULIFLOWER Organic Eprints
Tittarelli, Fabio; Kristensen, H.L.; Campanelli, G.; Bavec , F.; von Fragstein, P.; Testani, E.; Robacer , M.; Canali, S..
Living mulch management may have an effect on production of the crop and nutrient competition between the plant species in the field. In this paper, the amount of soil mineral nitrogen (N) available in the top soil during the cauliflower growing cycle and N uptake of the different components of the system were determined in two experimental sites in Italy and Slovenia where two different systems of living mulch management were compared (early sowed, late sowed) with a system with no living mulch. Moreover, nutritional competition of a hybrid and two open pollinated cultivars against weeds and living mulch was evaluated.
