According to the Native Vegetation Forest Inventory of 2010 for São Paulo State the remanescents of natural vegetation (RVN) represent 17.5% of the original native vegetation estimated as being 4,343,000 ha. The RNV are important refuges for animal wildlife and they also function as pockets to moderate temperature and humidity. For society they can be used as parks and also serve as an excellent natural laboratory for environmental education. In 2007, the State Government of São Paulo started a project named "Município Verde Azul? to promote environmental sustainability in municipalities of São Paulo State in which the RVN should be protected. This study aims to monitor areas of anthropogenic changes in RVN of 37 municipalities of São Paulo State that were... |

The unavoidable diet change in emerging countries, projected for the coming years, will significantly increase the global consumption of animal protein. It is expected that Brazilian livestock production, responsible for close to 15% of global production, be prepared to answer to the increasing demand of beef. Consequently, the evaluation of pasture quality at regional scale is important to inform public policies towards a rational land use strategy directed to improve livestock productivity in the country. Our hypothesis is that MODIS images can be used to evaluate the processes of degradation, restoration and renovation of tropical pastures. To test this hypothesis, two field campaigns were performed covering a route of approximately 40,000 km through... |

The potential for Brazilian sugarcane ethanol production and exportation is linked, among others, to environmental sustainability and certification. The objective of this work was to present the major activities carried out within the context of the Canasat Project that can contribute to the compliance of some certification guidelines for sustainable sugarcane ethanol production. The microregion of Auriflama in the State of São Paulo, Brazil was selected as study area. Remote sensing images from TM, AWiFS, CCD and HRC sensors were used to: 1) map sugarcane crop for crop year 2009/10; 2) map sugarcane harvest practice (with and without straw burning) during crop year 2009/10; 3) sugarcane cultivation in permanent protected areas (APP) by law; 4) land use... |
