The ICES herring assessment working group (HAWG) met for seven days in March 2019 to assess the state of five herring stocks and three sprat stocks. HAWG also provided advice for seven sandeel stocks but reported on those prior to this meeting in February. The working group conducted update assessments for the five herring stocks. An analytical assessment was performed for the combined North Sea and Division 3.a sprat, and data limited assessments (ICES category 3 and 5) were conducted for English Channel sprat (spr.27.7de) and sprat in the Celtic Sea (spr.27.67a–cf–k). The North Sea autumn spawning herring (her.27.3a47d) SSB in 2018 was estimated at 1.9 mill tonnes while F2–6 in 2018 was estimated at 0.21, which is below FMSY. Fishing mortality on... |

The Workshop on age validation studies of small pelagic species (WKVALPEL) fo-cused on validating ageing criteria for small pelagic species (anchovy, horse macke-rel, chub mackerel, mackerel and sardine). The aim of the workshop was to collate information on existing ageing protocols and to use these to support development of a validated protocol to better standardize age estimates. One of the main sources of error affecting ageing precision is the discrimination bet-ween the false ring and annulus. An ageing process follows a number of typical steps. First, an ageing methodology is established, based on scientific information, to obtain age data for a particular species. Once age results are available, some analysis is re-commended to improve precision... |

The ICES Inter-benchmark protocol for Hake in Division 3a, subareas 4, 6 and 7 and divisions 8a, b, d (Northern stock) (IBPhake 2019) was held by correspondence between December 2018 and February 2019. The meeting was chaired by Michel Bertignac, France, reviewed by Santiago Cerviño, Spain, and attended by three participants from two nations (Spain and Ireland). The ICES Inter-benchmark was conducted to assess the inclusion, in the stock assessment, of hake eggs and larvae data collected during the triennial ICES Mackerel/Horse Mackerel Egg Sur-vey (ICES, 2017) and of discards data from two fleets not yet included: the fleet of gillnetters operating in subareas 7 and 8 and a fleet of bottom trawlers (excluding Spanish trawlers operat-ing in subareas 7 and... |

The ICES Inter-Benchmark Protocol of sole in the Eastern English Channel stock (IBPsol7d) met to investigate the effect of the missing UK beam trawl commercial index (UK-CBT) in 2017 and 2018, that was related to the recent change in the database system in UK. The aim was to inves-tigate the internal consistency of the new UK-CBT and to analyse its influence on the sole in 7d assessment. The model currently used to assess this stock is an extended survival analysis (XSA). No other model was tested. During the IBP, it was decided to revise the Belgium beam trawl commercial index (BE-CBT) to move from a Landing Per Unit of Effort (LPUE) index to a Catch Per Unit of Effort (CPUE). This decision was motivated by the increase of age 2 sole discards in recent... |

The ICES/IOC/IMO Working Group on Ballast and Other Ship Vectors (WGBOSV) met at the NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole, USA, on 15–17 March 2017, including a joint meeting on 15 March with the Working Group on Introductions and Transfers of Marine Organisms (WGITMO). The meeting was hosted by Judy Peder-son (USA) and chaired by Sarah Bailey (Canada). The meeting was attended by 21 scien-tists in person, 3 by web-conference, and 2 by correspondence, representing 10 countries; 5 additional scientists representing 3 additional countries attended on the joint meeting day. The objective of the meeting was to discuss and address the six terms of reference (ToRs) in order to co-ordinate and advance research activities that reduce the risk of... |

The report presents summaries of the national contributions in 2016–2017 and planning for 2017–2018 for the surveys coordinated by the International Bottom Trawl Survey Working Group (IBTSWG). In the North Sea, the surveys are performed in quarters 1 and 3; in the Northeast Atlantic the surveys are conducted in quarters 1, 3, and 4 with a suite of 14 national surveys covering shelf areas from north off Scotland to the Gulf of Cádiz. North Sea Q1, 2017: Seven countries using six different vessels participated and performed 377 valid GOV hauls and 655 valid MIK hauls in the period between 18 January and 24 February. All rectangles were covered by at least 1 GOV haul and only one rectangle was not covered by any MIK haul. Denmark and Sweden both used “DANA”... |

Over the past year, the Stock Identification Methods Working Group (SIMWG) made progress toward addressing our multi-year terms of reference and has contributed to ICES Science Plan priorities. The working group was chaired by Lisa Kerr (USA) dur-ing this period and SIMWG held an in-person meeting in Portland, Maine, USA, 7–8 August 2018 with some members working by correspondence in 2018. SIMWG has continued to provide annual updates on recent applications of stock identifi-cation methods to ICES species and on advances in stock identification methods. SIMWG’s annual reviews on advances in stock identification methods keep ICES mem-bers abreast of best practices in this field of study. SIMWG continues to work on resolving issues of stock identification as... |
