A crop rotation experiment was established in 1996/97 at three locations representing different soil types and climates. Three factors were tested: i) crop rotation with different proportions of N2-fixing crops, ii) with and without a catch crop, and iii) with and without animal manure. A green manure crop increased yields in the following cereal crops, but at the rotational level, total yields were larger in crop rotations without a green manure crop. There were positive effects of animal manure and catch crops on yield. However, except for the coarse sandy soil, the yield effects of catch crops and animal manure decreased over time when a grass-clover green manure was included in the rotation. It appeared that the buffering effect of clover can... |

TP Organics is the European Technology Platform for organic food and farming, and for low-input agriculture. Established in 2008, it brings together small and medium-sized enterprises, larger companies, farmers, researchers, consumers and civil society organisations involved in the organic value chain from production, input and supply, to food processing, marketing and consumption. It identifies research and innovation needs and communicates them to policy-makers. The aim is to leverage the organic sector’s contribution to sustainable farming and food production. Since 2013, TP Organics is officially recognised by the European Commission as one of 40 European Technology Platforms (ETPs). TP Organics published its first Strategic Research Agenda in 2009.... |

Organic farming is knowledge intensive. To support farmers in improve yields and organic agriculture systems, there is a need to improve how knowledge is shared. There is an established culture of sharing ideas, successes and failures in farming. The internet and information technologies open-up new opportunities for knowledge exchange involving farmers, researchers, advisors and other practitioners. The OK-Net Arable brought together practitioners from regional Farmer Innovation Groups across Europe in a multi-actor project to explore how online knowledge exchange could be improved. Feedback from the groups was obtained for 36 'tools', defined as end-user materials, such as technical guides, videos on websites informing about practices in organic... |

Field studies on perennial weeds, such as Cirsium arvense, are necessary to study the systemic effects of weed control. In this study we analyse the responses in above-ground C. arvense biomass and crop yield from results obtained in two organic field experiments, both combining stubble cultivation with post-harvest catch crops. A range of catch crops was investigated, varying in both species mixture and method of establishment, yet stubble cultivation was the only treatment found to reduce C. arvense density. The effect was even seen only in one year when a harsh winter acted synergistically with soil tillage. C. arvense exhibited density-dependent growth, in terms of above-ground biomass at harvest, with an estimated max. exponential growth rate of... |

Perennial herbs can be difficult to manage because of their underground storage organs which live sheltered from observation and control. In this paper, we describe the development of a population dynamics model for two perennial weeds, Cirsium arvense and Tussilago farfara. The model is physiologically based and includes plant growth and development, and mowing as a control option. Model performance was compared with field data from monospecific stands of C. arvense in Denmark and Netherlands and of T. farfara in Denmark. Finally, optimal mowing strategies were explored with the model. |

This deliverable is part work package 4 of the OK-Net Arable Horizon 2020 project, which started on 1 March 2015 and finished on 28 February 2018. The aim of OK-Net Arable is to promote and exchange knowledge among farmers, farm advisers and scientists with the objective to increase productivity and quality in organic arable cropping all over Europe. Within the 3-year project, a knowledge platform was created (farmknowledge.org) to provide access to a wide range of tools and resources, that can help to improve organic production. While, the platform was launched in October 2016, it was platform was continuously improved during the course of the project and tools were added until the end of the project. Setting up the farmknowledge platform was a success.... |

A mixed cropping system of rapeseed and 10% turnip rape as trap crop was compared with oilseed rape in pure stand to demonstrate the reduction of infestation by insect pests. Furthermore the application of bio-pesticides like pyrethrum/rape oil (Spruzit Neu), spinosad (SpinTor), diatomeen earth (SiO2) /sunflower-oil and rock powder/water was tased. |

Cirsium arvense and Elytrigia repens are perennial weeds prevalent in organic cropping systems in Scandinavia. This study analysed the population dynamics of both species in long-termed crop rotation experiments conducted at three sites (coarse sand, silt and sandy loam) in Denmark from 1997-2009. The purpose was to gain insights into the factors influencing perennial weeds population changes over time, especially those important for outbreaks of C. arvense and E. repens infestations. Data were obtained from three cycles of four-year crop rotations with various cash crops and annual grass-clover subjected to four treatment combinations: with and without animal manure and with and without catch crops. The perennials were controlled by different tillage and... |
