Long-term organic crop rotation experiments for cereal production – yield development and dynamics Organic Eprints
Askegaard, Margrethe; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Rasmussen, Ilse A..
A crop rotation experiment was established in 1996/97 at three locations representing different soil types and climates. Three factors were tested: i) crop rotation with different proportions of N2-fixing crops, ii) with and without a catch crop, and iii) with and without animal manure. A green manure crop increased yields in the following cereal crops, but at the rotational level, total yields were larger in crop rotations without a green manure crop. There were positive effects of animal manure and catch crops on yield. However, except for the coarse sandy soil, the yield effects of catch crops and animal manure decreased over time when a grass-clover green manure was included in the rotation. It appeared that the buffering effect of clover can...

ØKOLOGISKE SÆDSKIFTER TIL PRODUKTION AF KORN Organic Eprints
Askegaard, Margrethe; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Driessen, Eugene; Nielsen, Erling; Thomsen, Henning C.; Bak, Holger; Lindberg, Julie F..

Nitrate leaching from organic arable crop rotations is mostly determined by autumn field management Organic Eprints
Askegaard, Margrethe; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Kristensen, Kristian.
Two main challenges facing organic arable farming are the supply of nitrogen (N) to the crop and the control of perennial weeds. Nitrate leaching from different organic arable crop rotations was investigated over three consecutive four-year crop rotations in a field experiment at three locations in Denmark (12 years in total). The experimental treatments were: i) crop rotation, ii) catch crop and iii) animal manure. Nitrate leaching was estimated from measured soil nitrate concentation in ceramic suction cells and modelled drainage. There were significant effects on annual N leaching of location (coarse sand > loamy sand > sandy loam) and catch crops (without > with). Including a grass-clover green manure on 25% of the area did not increase N...

Resultater med efterafgrøder i økologiske forsøg – hvordan kan disse resultater udnyttes på økologiske og konventionelle bedrifter Organic Eprints
Askegaard, Margrethe; Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Olesen, Jørgen E..

Exchanging knowledge to improve organic arable farming: An evaluation of knowledge exchange tools with farmer groups across Europe Organic Eprints
Bliss, Katie; Padel, Susanne; Cullen, Beth; Ducottet, Charline; Mullender, Samantha; Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Moeskops, Bram.
Organic farming is knowledge intensive. To support farmers in improve yields and organic agriculture systems, there is a need to improve how knowledge is shared. There is an established culture of sharing ideas, successes and failures in farming. The internet and information technologies open-up new opportunities for knowledge exchange involving farmers, researchers, advisors and other practitioners. The OK-Net Arable brought together practitioners from regional Farmer Innovation Groups across Europe in a multi-actor project to explore how online knowledge exchange could be improved. Feedback from the groups was obtained for 36 'tools', defined as end-user materials, such as technical guides, videos on websites informing about practices in organic...

Tolerance to weed harrowing in four spring barley varieties Organic Eprints
Hansen, Preben Klarskov; Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Holst, Niels; Andreasen, Christian.
The aim of this study was to investigate possible interactions between a preventive and a curativ method (combination of one pre and one post-emergence weed harrowing). We estimated the damages by weed harrowing in four pure varieties of spring barley, and analysed if there were differences in resistance and tolerance to weed harrowing between the varieties. As organic growing conditions are characterised by greater differences in nutrient levels, we further examined if there was any interactions between harrowing resistance and tolerance of the varieties and two nutrient level. Tolerance to weed harrowing was measured as an immediate effect (Resistance=how much of the plant is covered with soil after weed harrowing), a short-term effect (growth rate...

Tolerance of four spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) varieties to weed harrowing Organic Eprints
Hansen, Preben Klarskov; Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Holst, Niels; Andreasen, Christian.
We investigated the tolerance to weed harrowing of four spring barley varieties and examined the possible interactions between varietal weed suppressive ability and two nutrient levels. Tolerance was defined as the combined effect of crop resistance (ability to resist soil covering) and crop recovery (the ability to recover in terms of yield). The weed harrowing strategy was a combination of one pre- and one post-emergence weed harrowing. In terms of yield, the four varieties responded significantly differently to weed harrowing and the response depended on nutrient level. At the lower nutrient level, weed harrowing caused an increase in yield of 4.4 hkg ha-1 for a strong competitor (cv. Otira), while there was no effect on yield at the higher nutrient...

Cirsium arvense responses to stubble cultivation and catch crops in organic cropping systems Organic Eprints
Holst, Niels; Melander, Bo; Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Hansen, Preben Klarskov.
Field studies on perennial weeds, such as Cirsium arvense, are necessary to study the systemic effects of weed control. In this study we analyse the responses in above-ground C. arvense biomass and crop yield from results obtained in two organic field experiments, both combining stubble cultivation with post-harvest catch crops. A range of catch crops was investigated, varying in both species mixture and method of establishment, yet stubble cultivation was the only treatment found to reduce C. arvense density. The effect was even seen only in one year when a harsh winter acted synergistically with soil tillage. C. arvense exhibited density-dependent growth, in terms of above-ground biomass at harvest, with an estimated max. exponential growth rate of...

A physiologically-based model of Cirsium arvense and Tussilago farfara growth and control Organic Eprints
Holst, Niels; Riemens, Marleen; Rasmussen, Ilse A..
Perennial herbs can be difficult to manage because of their underground storage organs which live sheltered from observation and control. In this paper, we describe the development of a population dynamics model for two perennial weeds, Cirsium arvense and Tussilago farfara. The model is physiologically based and includes plant growth and development, and mowing as a control option. Model performance was compared with field data from monospecific stands of C. arvense in Denmark and Netherlands and of T. farfara in Denmark. Finally, optimal mowing strategies were explored with the model.

The dynamics of Cirsium arvense and Elytrigia repens in long-termed organic crop rotation experiments Organic Eprints
Melander, Bo; Rasmussen, Ilse A..
Cirsium arvense and Elytrigia repens are perennial weeds prevalent in organic cropping systems in Scandinavia. This study analysed the population dynamics of both species in long-termed crop rotation experiments conducted at three sites (coarse sand, silt and sandy loam) in Denmark from 1997-2009. The purpose was to gain insights into the factors influencing perennial weeds population changes over time, especially those important for outbreaks of C. arvense and E. repens infestations. Data were obtained from three cycles of four-year crop rotations with various cash crops and annual grass-clover subjected to four treatment combinations: with and without animal manure and with and without catch crops. The perennials were controlled by different tillage and...
