Public Policies to Be Implemented to Encourage the Use of Renewable Energy Sources in the Rural Area of Paraná BABT
Batista,Alexandre G.; Betini,Roberto C.; Bareta,Maria Luiza E.; Sandim,Álvaro A.; Pepplow,Luiz A..
Abstract Around the world there’s a rising interest in the installation of renewable energy sources due to their ecological, economical, political and social advantages. In this article is studied specifically the case of the incentive towards the installation of these sources in the state of Parana’s rural area, where they wouldn’t just be ecologically interesting, but also would help the improvement on the living conditions of the rural producers, promote income distribution and would cause an increase on the power supply, this way reducing the tariff. However, the problem arises in the acquisition of the energy generator, since even though they are interesting for the rural producers, these sources are majorly too expensive and end up being beyond their...

Power Flow Analysis and Self-recovery of Electrical Energy Distribution Network Using Artificial Neural Networks BABT
Avelar,Fabio da Silva; Fritzen,Paulo Cícero; Furucho,Mariana Antônia Aguiar.
ABSTRACT A computational model for self-recovery of electricity distribution network was developed to simulate it, emulated by the IEEE 123 node model. The electrical system considered has automatic switches capable of identifying a momentary failure in the line and finding the best reconfiguration for its reclosing. An artificial neural network (ANN), backpropagation, was used to classify the type of failure and determine the best reconfiguration of the distribution network. Initially, five power failure scenarios were simulated in certain different parts of the power grid, and power flow analysis via OpenDSS was performed. Next, the most suitable switching was observed within the shortest time interval to restore the power supply. With the purpose of...

Influence of ethanol concentration, addition of spices extract, and level of sweetness on physico-chemical characteristics and sensory quality of apple vermouth BABT
Joshi,Vinod K.; Sandhu,Danwant K..
The composition of apple base wine was found to be suitable for conversion into vermouth. The spices extract contained more TSS, tannins, esters, volatile acid but lower titrable acid than apple base wine. To optimize and develop apple vermouth with different ethanol concentrations (12%, 15%, 18%), sugar content (4%, 8%) and spices extract (2.5% and 5.0%) was prepared and was evaluated. Significant differences in physico-chemical characteristics and sensory quality amongst the vermouths having different levels of alcohol, sugar and spices extract were noted. Generally, increasing ethanol content decreased titrable acidity, tannins, macroelements and colour units while micro-elements, viscosity and total esters were increased. Increased sugar level affected...

Reduction of exchangeable calcium and magnesium in soil with increasing pH BABT
Miyazawa,Mário; Pavan,Marcos A.; Ziglio,Cláudio O.; Franchini,Júlio C..
A laboratory study was conducted with soil samples and synthetic solutions to investigate possible mechanisms related with reduction in KCl exchangeable Ca and Mg with increasing pH. Increasing soil pH over 5.3 with CaCO3 added to the soil and with NaOH solution added to soil/KCl suspension increased adsorptions of Ca and Mg. The reduction of Mg was greater than Ca and was related to the concentration of soil exchangeable Al. The decreases of soluble Ca and Mg following addition of Al in synthetic solution were at pH > 7.5. The isomorphic coprecipitation reaction with Al compounds may be the most possible mechanism responsible for the decrease of exchangeable Ca and Mg with increasing pH. Possible chemical reactions are presented.

International and Brazilian Versions of WHOQOL-DIS: (in)adequacy to its Underpinnings BABT
Cantorani,José Roberto Herrera; Pedroso,Bruno; Vargas,Leandro Martinez; Picinin,Claudia Tania; Pilatti,Luiz Alberto; Gutierrez,Gustavo Luis.
Abstract: The present article aims to analyze the WHOQOL-DIS (World Health Organization Quality of Life - Disabilities) structure to verify this instrument’s adequacy to the theoretical principles underlying its construction. The methodology consists in an analysis of the WHOQOL-DIS underlying theory, prompting questions about the adequacies of this theoretical model. The procedure is complemented by a syntax analysis in order to verify the relevant questions for the score calculation. The obtained results show that the subjects “participation” and “autonomy” are not objectively present in the international version, although they are considered in the theories as justifying elements for the instrument’s creation. In the Brazilian version, there are...

Resistance of oxidative stress in biofilm and planktonic cells BABT
Jakubowski,Witold; Walkowiak,Bogdan.
This work studied the susceptibility of biofilm produced by E. coli to oxidative stress, and compared the components of free radicals defences: level of glutathione, catalase and dismutase activities in planktonic and biofilm located cells. Results showed the diversity of responses to oxidative stress in bacterial cells in log or stationary phases in both planktonic and biofilm forms. The bacteria were exposed to free-radical donors (H2O2, tBOOH, menadione, SIN-1 or peroxynitrite) in a wide range of final concentrations, from 0.5 to 10mM. Different level of toxicity of individual donors, independence of cell type (planktonic forms or biofilm) and phases of growth were observed. The highest oxidative stress resistance was observed for the cells in...

Molecular systematics of the Phyllachorales (ascomycota, fungi) based on 18S ribosomal DNA sequences BABT
Wanderlei-Silva,Denise; Ramalho Neto,Eduardo; Hanlin,Richard.
In order to evaluate the monophyly of the Phyllachorales from a molecular standpoint and elucidate its phylogenetic relationships with other orders, a segment of the 18S rRNA gene from several representatives of the Phyllachorales, including species of Glomerella, Phyllachora, Coccodiella (=Coccostroma), Sphaerodothis, Ophiodothella, as well as Magnaporthe was sequenced. Maximum Parsimony analysis revealed that the Phyllachorales was a polyphyletic assemblage of taxa. None of the other members of the Phyllachorales, which produced either a clypeus or stroma, clustered with Glomerella. Of the taxa examined, was Coccodiella the closest relative of Phyllachora. Magnaporthe was closely related to the Diaporthales. Our 18S rDNA data highly supported Glomerella...

Protective effect of sodium selenite against the genotoxicity of aflatoxin B1 in human whole blood cultures BABT
Geyikoglu,Fatime; Türkez,Hasan.
This study was designed to investigate the effects of selenium and aflatoxin on human whole blood cultures (WBC) in relation to induction of sister-chromatid exchange (SCE). The results showed that the frequency of SCEs in peripheral lymphocytes was significantly increased by the direct-acting mutagen AFB1 (at doses 5 and 10 µM except for 1µM) compared to controls. When sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) was added alone at a molar ratio of 5x10-7 and 1x10-6, cells did not show significant increase in SCE frequency. Whereas, SCE rates induced by the various AFB1 concentrations could be significantly reduced by the presence of Na2SeO3 in a clear dose-related manner. These results indicated that selenite and AFB1 mutually antagonized their ability to cause DNA damage...

Effects of light and temperature on seed germination in Cecropia hololeuca Miq. (Cecropiaceae) BABT
Godoi,Simone; Takaki,Massanori.
Seeds of Cecropia hololeuca were submitted to regimes of constant and alternating temperatures, associated with photoperiods of white light, "shade light" and continuous darkness under controlled conditions in laboratory. Seeds did not germinate at constant temperatures of 10°C to 20°C and above 35°C. Seeds only germinated in the darkness when the temperature was alternated. "Shade light" inhibited germination. We concluded that the regime of alternating temperatures suppressed the light effects on seed germination of this species.

Assessment of genetic diversity in Cattleya intermedia Lindl. (Orchidaceae) BABT
Machado Neto,Nelson Barbosa; Vieira,Luiz Gonzaga Esteves.
Orchids are valuable pot plants and Cattleya intermedia is a promising species underused in breeding programs. Recently, breeding work with this species produced superior plants that are believed to be not the true species owing to the morphological differences from wild plants. The aim of this study was to estimate the level of genetic diversity and interrelationships between wild and bred Cattleya intermedia collected at three different Brazilian states and from commercial breeders with RAPD markers. A total of 65 polymorphic bands were used to generate a genetic distance matrix. No specific groupings were revealed by the cluster analysis as bred materials were not different from wild plants. The genetic differentiation (F ST = 0.01626) was very low...

Monitoring the effect of pyrene on the germination and radial growth of the wild and mutant strains of Rhizopus arrhizus UCP402 BABT
Shiosaki,Ricardo Kenji; Albuquerque,Clarissa Daisy da Costa; Okada,Kaoru; Fukushima,Kazutaka; Campos-Takaki,Galba Maria.
The physiological mutant of Rhizopus arrhizus was obtained in the pyrene resistance gradient test. Comparative studies were carried out about the behavior of the germination process and the radial growth of the mutant and wild strains of R. arrhizus UCP 402. Sabouraud Sucrose and Yeast Malt Broth cultures containing pyrene (10 mg/L) induced the germination process of the sporangiospores of the wild and mutant strains of R. arrhizus. The radial growth of the strains was inversely proportional to the pyrene concentration in the culture medium. The results showed an adaptation of R. arrhizus UCP 402x (mutant) in the pyrene (50mg/L) and suggested a higher ability of application in the removal of pyrene from the contaminated areas.
