REMOTE SENSING OF THE SEDIMENTATION PLUME OF THE RIVER SAN JUAN Gayana
Ballestero,Daniel.
The River San Juan (RSJ), in the border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica, is one the major rivers in Central America and drains the largest basin in the region (38570 km²) in terms of volume. Extending from Lago Cicibolca to the Caribbean Sea, the RSJ is an important source of freshwater, sediments, nutrients and pollutants to the continental shelf. Ecosystems degradation, contamination of water bodies and overexploitation of natural resources, particularly deforestation in the southern part of the basin, modified and incremented sedimentation processes in the basin and the coastal margin during the last few decades. Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer and Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor data, together with in-situ CTD, current meter, turbidity...

Zooplankton interactions with the oxygen minimum zone in the eastern south pacific Gayana
Escribano,Rubén.
Zooplankton in the coastal upwelling zone off the eastern South Pacific must cope with a shallow oxygen minimum zone. In this work, I summarize available information on the zooplankton species that interact with the OMZ in the upwelling region off northern Chile. Data are available from the MinOx cruise carried out in March 2000 and the ZOMEI cruise perfomed in October 2005, both onboard the R/V Vidal Gormaz of the Chilean navy. Nineteen species of copepods and 10 of euphausiids were analyzed in their vertical distribution and migrating behavior. Several abundante species appeared constrained by the OMZ and restricted to the upper 50m layer. However, other abundant species inhabit temporarily or permanently the OMZ contributing substantially to the...

Caracterización trófica de Orestias (Teleostei: Cyprinodontidae) en el Parque Nacional Lauca Gayana
GUERRERO,CLAUDIA J; POULIN,ELIE; MÉNDEZ,MARCO A; VILA,IRMA.

ALIMENTACION DEL CALAMAR ILLEX ARGENTINUS (CEPHALOPODA, OMMASTREPHIDAE) EN LA ZONA COMUN DE PESCA ARGENTINO-URUGUAYA Gayana
Bazzino,Gastón; Quiñones,Renato A.

ANALYSIS OF LAND SAT-5 TM IMAGERY FOR EXTRACTING AQUACULTURE FARMS INFORMATION IN THE KOREAN COASTAL WATERS Gayana
Shanmugam,P.; Ahn,Yu-Hwan; Hyung Ryu,Joo.
The objective of the present study is to compare certain conventional satellite image processing techniques with the recently evolved linear spectral unmixing method and to ascertain the best possible technique that can identify and position of aquaculture farms accurately in and around the Younggwang coastal region of Korea. Various conventional techniques existed to extract such information are spectral enhancement and classification. However, these techniques performed on the Landsat-TM imagery do not seem to yield accurate information about the aquaculture farms, and instead lead to misinterpretation and misclassification. A large discrepancy between the actual and extracted information results from spectral confusion and inadequate spatial resolution...

Marine biodiversity in Venezuela: Status and perspectives Gayana
Miloslavich,Patricia; Klein,Eduardo; Yerena,Edgard; Martin,Alberto.
Venezuela is among the ten countries with the highest biodiversity in the world, both in the terrestrial and the marine environment. Due to its biogeographical position, Venezuelan marine flora and fauna are composed of species from very different marine bioregions such as the Caribbean and the Orinoco Delta. The ecosystems in the Caribbean have received considerable attention but now, due to the tremendous impact of human activities such as tourism, over-exploitation of marine resources, physical alteration, the oil industry, and pollution, these environments are under great risk and their biodiversity highly threatened. The most representative ecosystems of this region include sandy beaches, rocky shores, seagrass beds, coral reefs, soft bottom...

Leaf litter decomposition from native and non-native species in a freshwater forested wetland of Chile Gayana
Gómez-Capponi,Francisco; Correa-Araneda,Francisco; Díaz,Ma Elisa; Olguín,Manuel; Encina-Montoya,Francisco; Figueroa,Ricardo.
ABSTRACT Decomposition of leaf litter is a fundamental process for the functioning of forested wetlands. The rapid increment of forest plantations has involved a greater contribution of leaf litter of exotic origin to these ecosystems. The decomposition rate between leaf litter of native and exotic origin in a forested wetland of the Mediterranean zone of Chile was compared, as well as the contribution of bacteria and macroinvertebrate to this process. It was determined that the decomposition rate of the leaf litter presented significant differences (p < 0.05) between species, being faster in those of non-native origin. This could be due to differences in ecophysiological aspects of the leaves like the presence of chemical compounds such as waxes or...

Effect of PHA and LPS on the Activity of Nonspecific Cytotoxic Cells and Macrophages of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Gayana
Gómez,Leonardo A; Cortés,Raúl; Smith,Carlos T.
This work studied the effect of the lectin phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) and bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on the activity of nonspecific cytotoxic cells (NCCs) and macrophages of peripheral blood in the rainbow trout. NCCs are cells of the innate immunity, homologues to Natural Killer (NK) cells of mammals, capable of eliminating cells infected with intracellular pathogens and also tumoral cells. Their lytic activity is mediated by the perforin/granzyme system and the Fas receptor-Fas ligand (FasR-FasL) system. Activity of NCCs was evaluated by their capacity to lyse HL-60 tumor cells. On the other hand, macrophages eliminate microorganisms by several mechanisms, including the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO). Results...

Marine biodiversity in Colombia: Achievements, status of knowledge, and challenges Gayana
Díaz,Juan M; Acero,Arturo.
Colombia is recognized as a megadiverse country on the basis of the number of terrestrial animal and plant species occurring within its boundaries. However, due to the circumstance that it possesses coasts on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, each of them exhibiting distinct geological, oceanographic, and climatic features, Colombia is perhaps the country with the highest marine biological diversity in South America and one of the most biodiverse in the New World. Although scientific research concerning marine biodiversity of Colombia has a very short history, considerable knowledge has been achieved in the last 10 years, particularly in regard to species inventories and ecosystem characterizations, including thematic mapping. Relatively...

S-CHLOROPHYLL SQUIRTS IN THE CHILEAN COAST: A SEAWIFS PERSPECTIVE Gayana
Marín,Víctor H.; Delgado,Luisa E..
Squirts can be defined as one-way jets, transporting coastally upwelled water to the deep ocean and terminating in a counterrotating vortex pair. These mesoscale oceanographic structures can export coastal biological production up to 200 km offshore. We describe, based on the analysis of SeaWIFS images, a squirt located in the northern Chilean coast (30° S). Our results show that the spatial structure of the velocity field, and the hammerhead shape, agree with previous conceptual models. We used the circulation data, resulting from feature-tracking analysis, to estimate the offshore export of coastal carbon production. We conclude that squirts represent a net carbon exporting mechanism accounting for 5% to 12% of coastal carbon production
