Ultrastructure of the Myelinated and Unmyelinated Nerve Fibers of the Tongue Mucosa of Albinus Rat (Wistar) with Aging International Journal of Morphology
Grisolia,D. F.; Ogawa,K; Motoyama,A.A.; Kronka,M. C.; Carneiro Jr.,J. T.; Duro,C. C.; Watanabe,I.
The purpose of this paper was to study the sensory myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers found in the subepithelial lamina propria of tongue mucosa of aging rats. It was used the silver impregnation, transmission electron microscopy methods and morphometric measurements. The results revealed that subepithelial nerve fiber bundles of the anterior, medium and posterior regions of tongue were arise from deep muscular layer of tongue. The nerve fiber bundles were verified inside of the connective tissue of lamina propria. These nerve fibers branched several times and into the connective tissue papillae they form a single or ramified sensory nerve endings. The fungiform and vallate papillae contain numerous nerve terminals. The fine structure demonstrated...

Extraoral Ligature of Lingual Artery: Anatomic and Topographic Study International Journal of Morphology
Lins,Carla Cabral dos Santos Accioly; Cavalcanti,Jennecy Sales; do Nascimento,Daniela Lira.
The lingual artery constitutes one of the branches of the external carotid artery, which is responsible for the vascularization of the tongue and neighbour regions. The hemorrhage caused by a lesion of the lingual artery can occur during a dental procedure (surgical accidents by the use of an instrument or rotating disc), by trauma, biopsy and dental implant. In some cases is difficult to stop the hemorrhage of injured vase, so is necessary to realize the extraoral ligature of this artery. Hence, this work studied the anatomic aspects of the lingual artery, by forty-eight dissections of twenty-four corpses settled in formol 10%, aiming to detail the origin, pathway and anatomic relations of the lingual artery in the region of anterior trigone of the neck,...

Communication Between the Mylohyoid and Lingual Nerves: Clinical Implications International Journal of Morphology
Fazan,Valeria Paula Sassoli; Rodrigues Filho,Ornar Andrade; Matamata,Fernando.
The mylohyoid muscle plays an important role in chewing, swallowing, respiration and phonation, being the mylohyoid nerve also closely related to these important functions. It has been postulated that the mylohyoid nerve might have a role in the sensory innervation of the chin and the lower incisor teeth while the role of the mylohyoid nerve in the mandibular posterior tooth sensation is still a controversial issue. Although variations in the course of the mylohyoid nerve in relation to the mandible are frequently found on the dissecting room, they have not been satisfactorily described in the anatomical or surgical literature. It is well known that variations on the branching pattern of the mandibular nerve frequently account for the failure to obtain...

Muscle Fibre Types and Connective Tissue Morphometry in Frontal Muscle of Norfolk Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) International Journal of Morphology
Hebling,André; Scabora,José Eduardo; Esquisatto,Marcelo Augusto Marretto.
The frontal muscle is formed by a complex of contractile elements which compose the set of facial muscles responsible for the expression of emotions. In view of its functional characteristics the frontal muscle consists of a mixture of high (type I) and low oxidative (type II) muscle fibres. The objective of the present study was to determine the area, diameter, and relative volume occupied by each fibre type in frontal muscles of Norfolk rabbits using nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide tetrazolium reductase (NADH-TR) histochemistry combined with morphometry. In addition, the connective tissue area (endomysium) and the number of blood vessels per fibre were evaluated. Female rabbits ranging in age from 6 to 8 months and weighing 2.8 to 3.1 kg were used....

Estudio Comparativo entre Soluciones Conservadoras con y sin Formol en Placenta Humana International Journal of Morphology
Wolff,Daniel; Villa,Pablo; Neirreitter,Alejandra; Ruibal,Cecilia; Ugon,Gustavo Armand; Salgado,Guillermo; Cantín,Mario.

Regression Equation from Dual Energy X Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) for Estimating Muscle Mass Segment International Journal of Morphology
Rodríguez Rodríguez,Fernando Javier; Almagiá Flores,Atilio Aldo; Berral de la Rosa,Francisco José.
Anthropometric methods used to estimate muscle mass (MM) do not specify values for body segments, a critical fact for individuals practicing physical activities or clinical diagnosis. In this study, 60 recreational athletes are anthropometrically evaluated and also undergo dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Linear regression statistics is subsequently used to establish the constants allowing the obtaining of the segment MM. Three equations were obtained, one for the upper members: MMUL = (0.533*FAP) - (0.176*RAP) + (0.42*WP) + (0.282*SRL) - 19,985; a second equation for muscle mass of the lower members: MMLL = (0.186*H) - (0.158*LTTL) - (0.024*LTL) + (0451*LP) 24.535; and the third one for the muscle mass of the trunk TrMM = (0.026*W) + (0.046*H) +...

An Unusual Anatomical Variation of the Levator Scapulae Muscle International Journal of Morphology
Varjão Lima,Gabriel; Cabral,Richard Halti; Andrade,Danilo Leite; Lacerda,Nayara Soares de Oliveira; Araújo,Vital Fernandes; Masuko,Telma Sumie.
Clinical and surgical importance of the levator scapulae muscle (LSM) requires a better knowledge of its anatomic variation mainly because of the possibility of new findings related to the embryologic development. This article reports a case of a left-sided LSM with atypical attachments in a 58-year-old preserved Caucasian female body. The muscle presented a bifurcation at its midpoint downward path. Its medial band attached to the anterior aspect of the left rhomboideus major muscle while its left band was fixed in the superior angle of the scapula after releasing a muscle expansion to the serratus anterior muscle. The morphometric analysis revealed LSM maximal width of 3.6 cm, bifurcation point located 6.6 cm apart from the C1 vertebral attachment;...

Anatomical Study of Position of the Rib Head for Placing Anterior Vertebral Body Screws in a Chinese Population International Journal of Morphology
Li,X. H; Xu,D. C; Li,Z. J; Wang,X.
Instrumentation of anterior vertebral body screws has become an important approach for treatment of unstable fracture or curvature of the spine, but little attention has been paid to the starting point of placing the screws and variability of the rib head position. We analyzed the variability of rib head position in a Chinese population in terms of the spinal canal and vertebral body using computed tomography (CT). Images from transverse CT scan of the T4-T12 vertebral bodies of 30 normal individuals were 3D reconstructed, and analyzed for measurement of parameters, which included: 1) distance between the left (or right) anterior border of the rib head and the posterior (or anterior) margin of the vertebral body [L(R )ARHP(A)VB], 2) left (or right)...

Illanes,Julio; Orellana,Cupertina; Fertilio,Bárbara; Leyton,Victor; Venegas,Felipe.

Morphometric Study of the Eyeball of Three Breeds of Goats in Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
James Olukayode,Olopade; Hyelduku Danladi,Kwari; Isabella Onome,Agbashe; Silas Kalu,Onwuka.
A comparative study of ocular morphometry was done in goats in Nigeria using the three major breeds. The result showed that the circumferences (mediolateral and anteriorposterior) were fairly constant between the breeds. The mean relative eyeball weight ranged from (0.39 0.59) x 10-3. Asymmetry was observed between the right and left eyeball weights and circumferences in all breeds and there was disparity in the asymmetry. It was also observed that heavier eyeball weights did not always correspond to a wider circumference. Female WAD and RS goats had significantly heavier (p < 0.05) eyeball weights than the males but that was not the case in the Sahel breed. Animals above one year had consistently higher values in most of the parameters examined on...
