To apply the ultrasonic 3D reconstruction method to measure the anatomic image data of lacrimal sac in the normal adult Chinese population, providing imaging anatomical basis for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of lacrimal duct diseases. 80 volunteers without lacrimal duct diseases were enrolled. The GE Voluson E8 ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus was used, with gynecological intracavitary probe (frequency: 5 ~ 12MHz) for the examination and measurement. Each datum was repeated three times for the average value. Among the 80 eyes, the lacrimal sacs of 74 eyes exhibited the clear imaging, with the imaging rate as 92.5 %. the vertical diameter of lacrimal sac cavity (LSC): 13.3±2.2 mm; anteroposterior diameter: 6.0±1.1 mm; trans diameter: 4.9±0.9 mm; the... |

Twelve adult male Wistar rats (220 g average weight) were divided in 3 experimental groups: GI -15. GII 30 and GIII 60 days, after mandibular molar extraction, with three experimental animals and one control per group. Qualitatively, ultrastructural changes of protein filaments from myofibrils of these muscles and ipsilateral to the extractions were observed. Ultrastructure asymmetry and disorganization of Z line and I band, in the experimental group GII, of Medial Pterigoid muscle (MPT) were observed. The temporomandibular dysfunction, stimulated by the unilateral extractions of mandibular molars in rats may lead to modifications in the Z line and I band, which showed to be sensitive to this dysfunction. Changes in the MPT muscle, probably related to... |

Some studies have shown that pinealectomized female rats present a large concentration of collagen fibers in the endometrium. The lack of light results in morphologic alterations in the uterine lamina propria and in the muscular layer, reducing thus the uterine weight. Therefore, this work aimed to analyze ultra-structurally the influence of melatonin in the remodeling of the collagen in the endometrium, in the estrus phase, in pinealectomized adult rats or submitted to lack of light. The experimental groups: I- sham-pinealectomized maintained in a clear/dark cycle 12/12 hours, during three months; II- pinealectomized rats maintained in a clear/dark cycle 12/12 hours, for three months; III- normal rats maintained in clear/dark cycle 12/12 hours for three... |

The objective of this study was to describe some changes in spermatids differentiating events during spermiogenesis, leading to spermatozoa final formation. The animals were sacrificed with ethylic acid inhalation and, then, testis fragments were collected, fixed in Karnovsky and post-fixed in osmium tetroxide. After dehydration, the sections were stained with uranyl acetate 2%. It was observed in early spermatids at Golgi phase, formation of acrosomal granule contained in the acrosomal vesicle, spheroidal nucleus with rugous reticulum around it, and Golgi apparatus made up of lamellae and vesicular structures. At cephalic hood phase, the granule suffers flattening and the marginal fossa is formed. In both phases, it was possible to observe the presence of... |

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ultrastructural effects of lead on the kidney cortex of rats. Wistar Albino rats (180-200g body weight) were divided into a controlled and lead acetate-exposed group. Rats received lead acetate at 500 ppm in their drinking water for 60 days. Both groups were fed with the same standard food, but lead acetate was added to the drinking water. During the experimental period, blood samples were taken from the abdominal aorta of the anesthetised animals. At the end of exposure, body weight and blood lead levels were measured. The kidney tissue samples were prepared and analyzed by light and transmission electron microscopy. Cortical renal tubules show various degenerative changes with focal tubular necrosis... |

The present ultrastructural observations demonstrate the presence of six cell types in the pars distalis of non-pregnant and pregnant bats of Taphozous longimanus. In the pars distalis of T. longimanus, STH cells are round to oval with eccentrically placed nucleus, numerous secretory granules and well developed Golgi indicate a cell under vigorous synthetic activity while those filled with secretory granules with reduced Golgi complex suggest reserve or storage state of cells. LTH cell is characterized by the large secretory granules, dilated endoplasmic reticulum and numerous mitochondria in the cytoplasm which indicate that these cells are hypertrophied and synthetically very active during pregnancy. ACTH cells are found either singly or in groups and... |

Propineb is a fungicide with a propylene-bis-dithiocarbamate structure. Pregnant Wistar rats were exposed to 400 ppm propineb concentrations in 5 ml distilled water, 5 days per week until the end of pregnancy. The rats were treated with propineb for 16 days and the brains of litter rats were sacrificed at first day of birth after which their brains were collected. Ultrastructural examination of the brains of the fetuses and propineb-treated pregnant females revealed a variety of histopathological effects. We suggest that mitochondrial damage may be an effective factor for neuron necrosis. These results supported the proposal that the exposure to fungicides such as propineb and to other naturally occurring compounds which inhibit mitochondrial function, may... |

Leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions have a pivotal role in immune responses. In our study Ten adult wistar albino rats weighing 180-200 g were used to obtain tissue samples. The animals were sacrificed by decapitation under ether anesthesia. The lymph nodes of the animals were then quickly removed. Specimens were immersed in the zinc iodide-osmium tetroxide (ZIO) solutation by Niebauer et al. (1969) and kept in the dark for 2 hours in this solution from temperature for fixation/staining. Samples were processed according to routine plastic embedding tecnique. Semithin sections of 1µm thick were cut and stained with methilene blue-azure II for light microscopic examination. We used zinc iodide-osmium tetroxide staining tecnique to distinguish endothelial... |

Fine structures of the ovary during the oestrous cycle in African giant rats (Cricetomys gambianus Waterhouse) were described in the present study. Ultrastructural features of the germinal epithelium and the medullar of the ovary were similar at different stages of the oestrous cycle. During mid proestrus, there was disorganization of the inner layer of the granulosa cells of secondary follicles to form the antrum. At late proestrus/early estrus, antrum formation had advanced and there was evidence of reorganization of granulosa cells. Fine structures of the ovary during mid estrus include follicles with variably shaped mitochondria, profiles of Golgi complexes and dense concentration of ribosomes. The theca interna shared similar ultrastructure with the... |

Circovirus are viral agents that cause disease in avian species. The main clinical symptoms of the disease are immunosuppression and, in young birds feather disorders. In neonates, the disease is known as "black spot" and characterized by abdominal enlargement, hepatobiliar congestion and failure to thrive. Also, it wasobserved in adult infected birds with other symptoms and clinical signs, such as enteritis, sinusitis, rhinitis, tracheitis, bronchopneumonia, myocarditis, nephritis, splenitis, dyspnea, anorexia, depression leading to high mortality. In April 2008, 317 saffron finch were apprehended during an illegal commercialization and were forwarded to the Wild Animals Recovery Center of the Tiete Ecological Park. Subsequently, 101 (31.66%) died and 20... |

Papillomaviruses, belonging to the Papillomaviridae family, are small oncogenic viruses, causing papillomas and fibropapillomas in the mucosal and cutaneous epithelia of several animals. In bovine species, thirteen types (BPV 1-13) were characterized to date. In this study, the occurrence of papillomatosis in four outbreaks in cattle herds, coming from Brazilian states were registered. The papillomatous lesions were found located in the teats, udders, head and neck. Under the transmission electron microscope, by the negative staining technique, it was possible to visualized rounded-format papillomavirus, with icosahedral symmetry, characterized as "full" and "empty" particles, measuring on average 60 nm in diameter, in all the 40 samples observed of skin... |

The myxomatosis is a contagious worldwide disease caused by poxvirus which infects domestic and wild rabbits. In the present study we present two distinct outbreaks of myxomatosis when raising rabbits, one for commercial purpose of production of meat and skins and, another one for the commercialization of ornamental rabbits. The observed signs were ocular, auricular, nasal, testis lesions and many times scattered throughout the body of the animals. The lesions were characterized by formation of nodules that by palpation disclosed gummy or gelatinous aspect. At the transmission electron microscopy, all the skin and crust samples were analyzed by negative staining technique. A great number of particles with morphology similar to the poxvirus, some enveloped... |

Spermatogenesis and the spermatozoon ultrastructure follow a common pattern in terrestrial oligochaetes. However, many of their characteristics are distinctive of each species and they are of great importance for phylogenetic and taxonomic studies. Germinal cells were studied through conventional electronic microscope techniques in order to go deep on spermatogenesis, especially on the mature spermatozoon ultrastructure of Eisenia foetida. Spermatogenesis occurs in seminal vesicles and follows a pattern comparable to that of some other oligachaetes species. Spermatozoon ultrastructural details revealed that it is a filiform cell, with the acrosome placed in anterior position, followed by the nucleus, the midpiece and the tail which flagellum has a 9+2... |

The structural alterations that occur in the muscle fibers of denervated rat diaphragms were studied. Fifteen adult male albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) with a mean weight of 200 g and about 60 days of age were used. Chronically denervated diaphragms were obtained and the animals were sacrificed after 4, 8 and 12 weeks of denervation. The left antimere of the diaphragm was denervated by sectioning of the phrenic nerve and the right antimere served as control. Each antimere was divided into fragments, which were used for analysis transmission electron microscopy. During the initial phase of denervation (4 weeks), ultrastructural muscle modifications appeared in scattered fibers and in foci along these fibers. Muscle fibers with foci of less dense and... |
