Ubicación de la Zona de Inervación del Músculo Flexor Corto del Pulgar en Individuos Sanos de Ambos Sexos International Journal of Morphology
Guzmán,Rodrigo A; Bralic Echeverria,María Pilar; Cordero Garayar,José.

Ulnar and Humeral Heads Forming Separate Bellies: A Rare Case of Digastric Flexor Carpi Ulnaris Muscle International Journal of Morphology
Rao K. G,Mohandas; Bhat,Seetharama M; Venkataramana,V; Rodrigues,Vincent.
Proper knowledge of muscular variations is essential for both anatomists and surgeons. Variations of the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) are not very common. We are reporting an unusual case of FCU muscle with two bellies. The two heads (ulnar and humeral) of the muscle continued as two separate bellies and the tendons of which joined each other slightly proximal to the wrist before getting inserted to pisiform bone. Further, detailed literature review of variations of FCU muscle is done and the developmental basis for the variation and its surgical importance are discussed.

Oosthuizen,Maria Aletta; Pretorius,Etheresia; Oberholzer,Hester Magdalena; van der Spuy,Wendy Jeannette.
Engineered nanoparticles are designed to perform specific functions and therefore have specific properties that could potentially be harmful. Nanoparticles such as titanium dioxide have the potential to become transparent and are therefore widely used in cosmetic products and sunscreen. Research on the toxicity of nanoparticles is of utmost importance and numerous in vitro studies have shown that some of these particles could have adverse health effects. The current study aimed to investigate the in vivo effects of two different titanium nanoparticles at two different concentrations after inhalation by experimental BALB/c mice. This was done to determine whether these particles will cause an inflammatory reaction, visible as alterations in platelet and...

Benigno,Maria Ivone Mendes; Liberti,Edson Aparecido; Conde Jr,Airton Mendes; de Sousa Leal,Noélia Maria; Lopes Rodrigues,Karla Emanuelle; Mota,Vanessa Benigno; Amstalden,Eliane Maria Ingrid.
Twelve adult male Wistar rats (220 g average weight) were divided in 3 experimental groups: GI -15. GII 30 and GIII 60 days, after mandibular molar extraction, with three experimental animals and one control per group. Qualitatively, ultrastructural changes of protein filaments from myofibrils of these muscles and ipsilateral to the extractions were observed. Ultrastructure asymmetry and disorganization of Z line and I band, in the experimental group GII, of Medial Pterigoid muscle (MPT) were observed. The temporomandibular dysfunction, stimulated by the unilateral extractions of mandibular molars in rats may lead to modifications in the Z line and I band, which showed to be sensitive to this dysfunction. Changes in the MPT muscle, probably related to...

ULTRASTRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF PINEALECTOMY AND LACK OF LIGHT INFLUENCE OVER COLLAGEN IN THE ENDOMETRIUM OF RATS International Journal of Morphology
Pinto de Medeiros,Juliana; Wanderley Teixeira,Valéria; Aguiar Coelho Teixeira,Álvaro; Baratella Evêncio,Liriane; Evêncio Neto,Joaquim.
Some studies have shown that pinealectomized female rats present a large concentration of collagen fibers in the endometrium. The lack of light results in morphologic alterations in the uterine lamina propria and in the muscular layer, reducing thus the uterine weight. Therefore, this work aimed to analyze ultra-structurally the influence of melatonin in the remodeling of the collagen in the endometrium, in the estrus phase, in pinealectomized adult rats or submitted to lack of light. The experimental groups: I- sham-pinealectomized maintained in a clear/dark cycle 12/12 hours, during three months; II- pinealectomized rats maintained in a clear/dark cycle 12/12 hours, for three months; III- normal rats maintained in clear/dark cycle 12/12 hours for three...

Vicentini,Carlos Alberto; Muñoz,Mario Esteban; Vicentini,Irene Bastos Franceschini.
The aim of the present study was to analyze the ultrastructural aspects of spermatogenesis in Phalloceros caudimaculatus, during cell proliferation. The parenchyma is organized morphologically as lobular restricted spermatogonial testis. Spermiogenesis in this species is characterized by four morphological stages of development (spermatids S1 through S4). The mature spermatids and spermatozoa heads are situated at the periphery of the cyst surrounded by the cytoplasm of the Sertoli cells. The germ cell's ultrastructure and spermatogenesis in P. caudimaculatus are very similar to that of other poeciliids.

Ultrastructural Changes in the Placental Membrane in Pregnancies Associated with Diabetes International Journal of Morphology
Verma,Ranjana; Mishra,S; Kaul,Jagat Mohini.
Placenta is the most accurate record of the infant prenatal experience. If the placenta is examined minutely after delivery, it provides much insight into the prenatal health of the baby and the mother. The weight of placenta is higher in diabetic pregnancy in comparison to the normal pregnancy. To study the cellular changes that might contribute to more weight of placenta in diabetic pregnancies, light microscopic and electron microscopic analysis was performed. Twenty singleton pregnancies complicated with Gestational diabetes mellitus (12 controlled on diet, 8 controlled on insulin) were selected and compared to control group. Tissue sections were processed and analyzed. The placenta of diabetic pregnancies showed no abnormality on gross observation but...

Ultrastructural Characterization of the Pars Distalis of the Indian Female Sheath-Tailed Bat, Taphozous longimanus (Hardwicke) International Journal of Morphology
Nerkar,Archana A; Gadegone,Mohan M.
The present ultrastructural observations demonstrate the presence of six cell types in the pars distalis of non-pregnant and pregnant bats of Taphozous longimanus. In the pars distalis of T. longimanus, STH cells are round to oval with eccentrically placed nucleus, numerous secretory granules and well developed Golgi indicate a cell under vigorous synthetic activity while those filled with secretory granules with reduced Golgi complex suggest reserve or storage state of cells. LTH cell is characterized by the large secretory granules, dilated endoplasmic reticulum and numerous mitochondria in the cytoplasm which indicate that these cells are hypertrophied and synthetically very active during pregnancy. ACTH cells are found either singly or in groups and...

Ultrastructural Effects of the Propineb on Brain of Fetuses During Rat Pregnancy International Journal of Morphology
Ekinci,C; Tahaoglu,A. E; Yavuz,D; Deveci,E; Aktas,A; Yilmaz,T; Yumusak,Ö; Yükselmis,O.
Propineb is a fungicide with a propylene-bis-dithiocarbamate structure. Pregnant Wistar rats were exposed to 400 ppm propineb concentrations in 5 ml distilled water, 5 days per week until the end of pregnancy. The rats were treated with propineb for 16 days and the brains of litter rats were sacrificed at first day of birth after which their brains were collected. Ultrastructural examination of the brains of the fetuses and propineb-treated pregnant females revealed a variety of histopathological effects. We suggest that mitochondrial damage may be an effective factor for neuron necrosis. These results supported the proposal that the exposure to fungicides such as propineb and to other naturally occurring compounds which inhibit mitochondrial function, may...

Ultrastructural Features of Ovary of the Female African Giant Rat (Cricetomys gambianus, Waterhouse) During Oestrous Cycle International Journal of Morphology
Akinloye,Adebayo Koyuum; Oke,Bankole Olusiji.
Fine structures of the ovary during the oestrous cycle in African giant rats (Cricetomys gambianus Waterhouse) were described in the present study. Ultrastructural features of the germinal epithelium and the medullar of the ovary were similar at different stages of the oestrous cycle. During mid proestrus, there was disorganization of the inner layer of the granulosa cells of secondary follicles to form the antrum. At late proestrus/early estrus, antrum formation had advanced and there was evidence of reorganization of granulosa cells. Fine structures of the ovary during mid estrus include follicles with variably shaped mitochondria, profiles of Golgi complexes and dense concentration of ribosomes. The theca interna shared similar ultrastructure with the...

Ultrastructural Study of Spermatogenesis in Eisenia foetida (Annelida, Oligochaeta) International Journal of Morphology
Rolando,A.; Romanini,M. C.; Mugnaini,M. T.; Bozzo,A.; Pastorino,I.; Soñez,C. A..
Spermatogenesis and the spermatozoon ultrastructure follow a common pattern in terrestrial oligochaetes. However, many of their characteristics are distinctive of each species and they are of great importance for phylogenetic and taxonomic studies. Germinal cells were studied through conventional electronic microscope techniques in order to go deep on spermatogenesis, especially on the mature spermatozoon ultrastructure of Eisenia foetida. Spermatogenesis occurs in seminal vesicles and follows a pattern comparable to that of some other oligachaetes species. Spermatozoon ultrastructural details revealed that it is a filiform cell, with the acrosome placed in anterior position, followed by the nucleus, the midpiece and the tail which flagellum has a 9+2...
