Unusual Relation of the Median Nerve with the Accessory Head of the Biceps Brachii Muscle: An Original Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Mas,Nuket; Pelin,Can; Zagyapan,Ragiba; Bahar,Hakan.
During the laboratory dissection of the brachial region and the arm, an abnormal relation of median nerve with the accessory head of biceps brachii muscle has been observed unilaterally on the right upper limb of a male cadaver. Whereas the short and long heads have their normal origin, additional-excess third head originated from the anteromedial surface of the superior part of the humerus. Some fibers of this accessory head on the medial side arise from the deep fascia surrounding the brachialis muscle. The fibers then cross the median nerve superficially before joining the third head which has inserted into a common tendon together with the long and short heads. To have information of such variations is of importance either for anatomists or clinicians...

Unusual Relationship between the Piriform Muscle and Sciatic, Inferior Gluteal and Posterior Femoral Cutaneous Nerves International Journal of Morphology
Jacomo,A. L; Martinez,C. A. R; Saleh,S. O; Andrade,M; Akamatsu,F. E.
Piriformis muscle syndrome has been increasingly recognized as a cause of leg pain. Overuse, strain, or anatomical variations of the relationship between the nerve and the piriformis muscle are thought to be the underlying causes of the entrapment of the sciatic nerve. We report a variation not previously described which was found during a routine dissection. During routine dissection of the left gluteal region of an adult male cadaver we observed a high division of the sciatic nerve and the presence of an accessory piriformis muscle. The sciatic nerve divided beneath the piriformis muscle and the common fibular nerve passed over the accessory piriformis muscle, whereas the tibial nerve reflected anteriorly to pass between the accessory piriformis and the...

Unusual Third Head of the Sternocleidomastoid Muscle from the Investing Layer of Cervical Fascia International Journal of Morphology
Sirasanagandla,Srinivasa Rao; Bhat,Kumar M. R; Pamidi,Narendra; Somayaji,S. Nagabhooshana.
The abnormal origin, presence of additional head and layered arrangement of fibers are the reported variations of sternocleidomastoid muscle in the past. In the present case we report a rare unusual origin of third head of the sternocleidomastoid muscle in a 60 year-old male cadaver. This additional head originated from the investing layer of cervical fascia in the roof of the subclavian triangle close to the clavicle and traversed obliquely upward, forward and fused with clavicular head. The insertion and nerve supply of the muscle was found to be normal.

Upper and Lower Lip Soft Tissue Thicknesses Differ in Relation to Age and Sex International Journal of Morphology
Karaca Bozdag,Zekiye; Kurkcuoglu,Ayla; Ustdal,Ayca; Cam,Yener; Oguz,Ozkan.
This study was performed to determine age- and sex-related differences in lip thickness. Lateral cephalometric images of 220 healthy individuals were taken and the thicknesses of the upper and lower lips were measured. The measurements were performed in three different age groups. Our results indicate that the lower lip thickness, as well as the distance between the most anterior point of contact between the upper and lower lips and the most protruding point of the upper incisor teeth, differed between the two sexes. The lips of males were thicker than those of females. Receiver operating curve analysis was performed to determine the cutoff values to differentiate thickness between males and females. Our results showed that knowledge of upper and lower...

Use of Morphometric Analyses to Assess the Efficacy of the Technique of Resin Composite Bonded to Cervical Dentin with Additional Mechanical Retentions International Journal of Morphology
Kuramochi,Gisaku; Borie,Eduardo; del Sol,Mariano.
The structural changes and morphological derivatives of progressive dentin hypermineralization determine the bonding to its surface. A planimetric study and fracture volume estimate were conducted to assess the efficacy of resin composite bonded to hypermineralized cervical dentin with and without retentions by applying a shear test. Thirty-four premolars from adult patients were used to obtain a flat cervical dentin surface. The specimens were distributed randomly into two groups: 1) experimental, where hemispherical retentions were carved into the cervical dentin, and 2) control, where the flat dentin was maintained. Using a jig, a resin column was built into the dentin surface fitted with bonding in specimens from both groups, which were then subjected...

Use of Morphometric Variables for Differentiating Spanish Hound Breeds International Journal of Morphology
González,A; Luque,M; Rodero,E; González,C; Aguilera,R; Jiménez,J; Sepúlveda,N; Bravo,S; Herrera,M.
The term Podencos refers to a group of dog breeds from Spain and classification in Group 5 of dog breeds by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). The aim of this study was to compare traits morphometric breeds of Podencos; Canario, Ibecenco, Andaluz (small, medium and large) and Orito. Ten morphometric variables were measured in 385 animals (245 females and 140 males), head length, muzzle length, height at withers, rump height, body length, head width, rump width, chest depth, chest girth and the shin circumference. Morphostructural variables were more homogeneous in the Podenco Ibicenco and the Podengo Canario, because for many years there were gradually distinctive trait standards for each breed. The discriminate analysis indicated...

Using Standing Postures as a Practical Alternative to Gait Analysis for Assessing Normal Neuromotor Activity Variation of the Ankle Muscle Antagonists: A Soleus H-Reflex and EMG Activity Study International Journal of Morphology
Pineda,E. E; Sabbahi,M. A; Etnyre,B. R.
Soleus and tibialis anterior muscle EMG and soleus H-reflex are widely used to study ankle motor control during gait. Normally, the soleus H-reflex amplitude and EMG activity varies greatly through the course of walking. The examining of these events during walking requires space and resources that are generally found only in research oriented facilities, making difficult a more practical use. Earlier reports have suggested that normal variation of the soleus H-reflex and EMG could be determined from standing postures. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to examine and determine which standing postures would reproduce the normal neuromotor variation of the ankle muscle antagonists. A total of five postures were investigated. The results of this...

Using Standing Postures as a Practical Alternative to Gait Analysis for Assessing Normal Neuromotor Activity Variation of the Ankle Muscle Antagonists: A Soleus H-reflex and EMG Activity Study Comparing Patients with Hemiplegia to Healthy Subjects International Journal of Morphology
Pineda,Enrique; Sabbahi,M; Etnyre,B.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the soleus H-reflex amplitudes recorded in three standing postures between a group of patients with stroke and a group of healthy subjects. Nine ambulatory patients were compared with 10 healthy subjects. Measures were recorded during quiet standing (QS), heels raised (PO) and with the foot of the measured leg held just off the ground while standing on the opposite leg (SW). The results showed that patients, as opposed to the healthy group, did not inhibit soleus H-reflex in the SW posture. As opposed to evaluating ankle motor control during gait, the PO and SW standing postures appeared to offer a practical and objective method to assess soleus H-reflex when the purpose is to determine impairment (or...

Uterine Gland Microstructure in the Pregnant and the Non-pregnant Lesser Galago (Galago senegalensis) International Journal of Morphology
Njogu,Allan; Owiti,George Otiang'a; Oduor-Okelo,Dominic.
The histology and the ultrastructure of the uterine glands of the lesser bushbaby (Galago senegalensis) were studied in six specimens (5 pregnant and one non pregnant) which were fixed partly with bouin's fixative and part with 2.5% glutaraldehyde in 0.1 M cacodylate buffer. An overview of the main results revealed uterine glands in the non-pregnant uterus are rudimentary and scarce within the mucosa. In early pregnancy (first trimester) the uterine glands profiles appear in clusters. In late stage pregnancy (third trimester) the uterine gland profiles appear opposite chorionic vesicles. In the later stages of gestation maternal glandular epithelium consisted mainly of simple columnar epithelium. The cells had abundant flattened cisternae of granular...
