Physiological and behavioral responses to Cu exposure were measured in the Baltic clam Macoma balthica from the Gulf of Gdansk, southern Baltic Sea. The burrowing activity, mortality rate, glycogen content, condition index and free amino acid (FAA) composition were analysed as indicators of stress in a series of field and laboratory studies. M. balthica exposed to Cu showed clear Cu-concentration related differences in burrowing activity and mortality rate, but no consistent differences in the condition index, glycogen content, and free amino acids. The clams from a less polluted area reacted more strongly and were more sensitive to additional stress as compared to organisms from a more polluted region. The effect of Cu on the ecophysiology of Baltic clams... |

A sea water recirculating flume was especially designed in the framework of this study. It improves physiological and ecophysiological evaluation of a 25 oysters (c. gigas) set fed on PSP toxic A. minutum cultures and then detoxified with commonly used aquaculture species (I. galbana, T. suecica, S. costatum, T. weissflogii). Chlorophyll a levels are kept steady in each case and adjusted in order to reach the same food value in each tank (0,5 mg/l TPM). When exposed to the mildly toxic species A. minutum (0,5 pg.eq.STX.cel-1) oysters depict a reduced clearance rate, food uptake and shell-valves activity (compared to non-toxic algal diets). The same physiological parameters do not show any significant differences when oysters are exposed to the control al... |

An ecophysiological deterministic model of growth, reproduction and interactions between the bivalve and its estuarine environ ment was established for the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas. The environmental variables used in the model are: total particulate matter, particulate organic matter, particulate inorganic matter, chlorophyll, phaeopigments, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. Rates of clearance, filtration, ingestion, absorption and respiration along with efficiencies of retention, selection and absorption are modelled with endogenous (dry weight of the animal, energy allocation between growth and reproduction) and exogenous variables (temperature, food quality and quantity). The model simulate the temporal evolution of two compartments: somatic... |
