Agostini-Costa,Tânia da Silveira; Wondraceck,Danielle Cristina; Rocha,Wesley da Silveira; Silva,Dijalma Barbosa da.
Pereskia aculeata Mill. (Ora-pro-nóbis) is a native cactaceae from tropical America, whose leaves have high protein content. In Brazil it is found in all territorial extension between the states of Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul. Most studies have focused on chemical characterization of the leaves of this specie. The objective was to assess the carotenoids profile and the total polyphenols present in the fruits of P. aculeate. Carotenoids were determined by HPLC-PAD (high performance liquid chromatography - photodiode array detector), total polyphenols were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu and vanillin methods. Trans-β-carotene was the main carotenoid, followed by α-carotene, lutein and other minor carotenoids. It was found 64.9 ± 1.1 mg.100g-1 of gallic acid...

Evaluation of some oxidative-stress and antioxidant markers in goats during estrous cycle under Egyptian environmental conditions R. Bras. Zootec.
Teama,Fatma Edrees Ibrahim.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to explore the impact of thermal stress on hormonal level and antioxidant activity in goats during various phases of the estrous cycle in the Egyptian summer. Forty cycling does were allocated to two groups (20 animals each) divided by season (mild/hot). Daily meteorological, rectal temperature, and respiratory rate data were recorded in the two seasons. The estrous cycle of the goats was synchronized by two intramuscular injections of 5 mg of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) at 11-day intervals. Blood samples were collected every two days and the levels of total antioxidant, malondialdehyde, and β-carotene were estimated. Total protein, albumin, cholesterol, triglycerides, progesterone, and thyroxine (T4) hormones were...

New opportunities for developing tomato varieties with enhanced carotenoid content Scientia Agricola
Leiva-Brondo,Miguel; Valcarcel,Mercedes; Martí,Raúl; Roselló,Salvador; Cebolla-Cornejo,Jaime.
ABSTRACT The development of varieties with a high content of antioxidant compounds, such as carotenoids, has become a major focus in the marketing of tomato. Several mutants have been used in the development of high pigment varieties, but the significant influence of the environment on carotenoid content and the presence of negative side effects in vegetative growth and yield have limited the success of these variants. Consequently, the identification of alternative sources of variation in the quest for high carotenoid content is ongoing. In this study, 12 accessions of Solanum lycopersicum (including the former var cerasiforme) and S. pimpinelifolium have been evaluated in three different environments: open field and glasshouse cultivation at two sites....

Pacheco,Sidney; Peixoto,Fernanda Marques; Borguini,Renata Galhardo; Nascimento,Luzimar da Silva de Mattos do; Bobeda,Claudio Roberto Ribeiro; Santiago,Manuela Cristina Pessanha de Araújo; Godoy,Ronoel Luiz de Oliveira.
In order to generate simple, efficient analytical methods that are also fast, clean, and economical, and are capable of producing reliable results for a large number of samples, a micro scale extraction method for analysis of carotenoids in vegetable matrices was developed. The efficiency of this adapted method was checked by comparing the results obtained from vegetable matrices, based on extraction equivalence, time required and reagents. Six matrices were used: tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), carrot (Daucus carota L.), sweet potato with orange pulp (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.), pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch.), watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai) and sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) flour. Quantification of the...

Metabolic responses and β-carotene production by the unicellular green alga Dunaliella salina exposed to leaf extracts Acta Botanica
Einali,Alireza; Mazang-Ghasemi,Sahar; Valizadeh,Jafar; Noorozifar,Meisam.
ABSTRACT The present work investigated the effects of aqueous extracts of eucalyptus ( Eucalyptus globulus) and elderberry ( Sambucus ebulus) leaves on β-carotene productivity in Dunaliella salina, a green microalga. Leaf extracts from eucalyptus have greater amounts of phenolics and flavonoids, as well as greater ferric reducing antioxidant potential than elderberry. The extracts of both species greatly inhibited growth of algal suspensions. However, chlorophyll and β-carotene concentration increased in cells treated with leaf extracts, and the highest values were detected in 1 % eucalyptus and 2 % elderberry extracts. Fresh weight, total sugar, and protein content significantly increased following exposure of cells to different doses of leaf extracts....

Ultrasonic pretreatment of carrot slices: Effects of sonication source on drying kinetics and product quality Anais da ABC (AABC)
YILMAZ,BURCIN; CAKMAK,HULYA; TAVMAN,SEBNEM.
Abstract: In this study effects of ultrasonic pretreatment with different sonication sources on drying behavior of carrot slices were evaluated. Fresh carrot slices were pretreated with ultrasonic probe at 65, 75 and 85 W or ultrasonic bath at 10, 20 and 30°C for 3, 5 and 10 min before air drying. Water gain % and solid loss % of pretreated samples were calculated and color values, β-carotene content and rehydration ratios of dried samples were determined. Drying behavior of the pretreated samples was evaluated and the drying data were fitted to thin layer drying models. Constant drying rate period was not observed for the carrot slices; however two definite falling-rate periods having different slopes were obtained. Drying time was significantly reduced...

Characterization and shelf life of β-carotene loaded solid lipid microparticles produced with stearic acid and sunflower oil BABT
Gomes,Graziela Veiga de Lara; Borrin,Thais Ribeiro; Cardoso,Lisandro Pavie; Souto,Eliana; Pinho,Samantha Cristina de.
Solid lipid microparticles were tested as microencapsulation systems for protecting β-carotene from degradation. Blends of long-chain (C18) solid lipids (70% stearic acid) and sunflower oil (30%) were used to produce lipid microparticles encapsulating the carotenoid. Polysorbate 80 (4%) was employed to stabilize the stearic acid microparticles. The concentration of β-carotene was monitored using spectrophotometry, the particle size distribution was measured by laser diffraction, the crystal structure was determined by wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and the thermal behaviour was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) over a period of seven months. All of the systems had an average particle size smaller than 5 µm. To avoid β-carotene...
