Farmers in those areas can grow rice once a year with rainfed water. They usually grow good quality rice varieties for consumption in family and neighborhood. “Khao Jek” is local rice variety widely grow in Den Yai and Pri Nok-yung of Hankha district. The cooked eating qualities have soft texture and aroma. It’s the most favorite variety of local farmers. Chai Nat Rice Research Center collected this variety in 2004 and continuously improved by pureline selection, observation, intra-station, inter-station, farmers’ field yield trial, yield stability trial and promising line test. Research was conducted in order to study the environmental effects on characteristic variation in the photoperiod sensitive rice varieties at Nakhon Si Thammarat Rice Research Center during 2011-2013. Rice varieties in the study were included Pathum Thani 1, Phitsanulok 2, RD31 and RD41. Results showed that rice grown in April having plant height, number of tillers per hill, number of panicles per hill and panicle length more than rice grown in January and July. The number of filled grains and yields were highest when grew in January. Rice grown in April had high percentage of unfilled grains. The influence of other climatic conditions did not show obviously effect on the growth of rice varieties in the study. Development of new CMS lines by backcrossing was conducted at Suphan Buri Rice Research Center during 2005-2011. The objective was to develop Thai elite breeding lines to be better varieties of CMS lines adapted to the environment in Thailand. The new CMS lines will be used for research project on hybrid rice production. CMS lines from IRRI were used as donor in repeated backcrossing of 6-7 generations to the recurrent parent, Thai elite breeding line. After seven generations of repeated backcrossing two new CMS lines, SPR06186A (IR58025A/7*SPR98015-59-1-2-2-2) and SPR06189A (IR73328A/7*SPR98015-59-1-2-2-2), were developed. Irrigated paddy fields are the rice growing areas having high yield potential.Two significant factors enhancing high yield are the well-adapted variety and good in rice production management. PSL05101-93-1-32 is a promising rice line derived from the 3-way cross of PSL00508-3-1-1-4/IR66738-118-1-2//IR67966-188-2-2-1 in 2005. It had as high yield as 965 kg/rai (6.03t/ha).The average grain yield was 730 kg/rai which was greater than PSL2, CNT1 and RD47 by 14, 13 and 7%, respectively. The maturity was 115 days after sowing by transplanting method. Plant height was 83-90 cm. This promising line is a non-glutinous long grain rice having straw-color husk. Development of local rice variety at Krabi Rice Research Center is an experiment under local upland rice breeding program in the southern region for compensating rubber trees and oil palms. One hundred and twenty rice varieties that farmers grow in the southern region were selected to study since 2008 until now. The aims of this study are to record the characteristics, categorize, investigate, select pure rice seed, compare production and test on using nitrogen fertilizer. The result showed that this variety, Dokkha, is photoperiod sensitive. It has 332 kg per rai, straight clum 150 cm plant height and 145 - 150 days maturity, green leaves, 8 seeds per panicle, straw colored husk, 20.74 % amylose content and susceptible to rice blast disease.
