Three dwarf lycophytes from the Carboniferous of Argentina*) Naturalis

Impressions of the bark of two small lycophytes, Bumbudendron paganzianum gen. et sp. nov. and Bumbudendron nitidum sp. nov., are described from middle Carboniferous shales in the Sierra de Paganzo. Lepidodendroid leaf cushions with a well-developed leaf scar showing a single trace, and the presence of a fertile branch structure, invite comparison with Bodeodendron/Sporangiostrobus of the contemporaneous equatorial belt. The presence of an infrafoliar bladder provides the main distinguishing character. Small stem impressions with a thick cuticle are recorded of the simple lycophyte Malanzania nana gen. et sp. nov. which has false leaf scars corresponding to spiny excrescences. Dispersed scolecodonts from Cainozoic strata of Jamaica Naturalis

Scolecodonts found in Cainozoic palynological and palaeontological samples from Jamaica are compared with dispersed scolecodonts from Tertiary strata in France. The problem of delimiting species and genera is discussed in view of the variability observed in Recent polychaete annelids and of the dissimilar populations found in the two regions.

Gemellitheca gen. nov., a fertile pecopterid fern from the Upper Permian of the Middle East Naturalis

Pecopterid fronds bearing typically bilocular synangia, Gemellitheca saudica gen. et sp. nov., are described from the Unayzah plant bed in Saudi Arabia and the Gomaniimbrik Formation of the Hazro inlier in southeastern Turkey. The synangia are attached near the sharply incurved pinnule margin and extend across the whole or almost the whole half-width of the pinnules. Their apices lie near and in some cases over the midrib, and are curved abaxially away from it. The closest comparison is with Dizeugotheca Archangelsky & de la Sota, a Permian pecopterid with transversely placed fructifications which look very similar, but Dizeugotheca is described as having sori with sporangia consistently in groups of four, two of each group being largely overlapped by...

Catalogue of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic holotypes in the collection of plant fossils in the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum, Leiden Naturalis

This is an inventory of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic type material in the original palaeobotanical collections of the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum, Leiden, The Netherlands. In total 60 holotypes are documented and one is noted as missing from the collections. One new combination is made (Cinnamomum javanicum (Goeppert) nov. comb.) and several species are considered to be conspecific.

Tintinnomorphs from deep-sea sediments of the Banda Sea (Indonesia) Naturalis

Preservational circumstances, probably related to high productivity and high sedimentation rates, result in the occurrence of a wide variety of tintinnid palynomorphs in (sub-)Recent sediments of the Banda Sea. These organic (probably chitinous) remains include both loricae and cysts, as well as the stalked pouches in which the cysts were originally encapsulated. Collectively termed 'tintinnomorphs', these palynomorphs are described and classified in an informal scheme that may serve as a key to the recognition of 76 morphologically distinctive types.

Chitinous palynomorphs and palynodebris representing crustacean exoskeleton remains from sediments of the Banda Sea (Indonesia) Naturalis

Palynological residues from surface sediments in the Banda Sea (Indonesia) are characterised by the presence of chitinous palynomorph types that can be correlated with exoskeletons of crustaceans, notably calanoid copepods. A series of 27 palynomorph types are described and informally categorised. Also the quantitatively prominent transparent palynodebris and its diffuse degradation products are derived from crustaceans. Selective preservation of the chitinous remains is considered to be related to the effects of high plankton production and high sedimentation rate.

A revision of the Late Triassic Bintan fl ora from the Riau Archipelago (Indonesia) Naturalis

In 1951, W.J. Jongmans published the description of a small flora from Bintan Island in the Riau Archipelago of Indonesia, based on material from one fossil locality in the Bintan Formation (Late Triassic). The complete fossil plant collection from Bintan includes specimens from four localities, all of which were examined for the first time in this study. Twenty-one taxa were determined, compared to an earlier four, and three earlier determinations were revised. Of these 21 taxa, 14 were attributed to the Bennettitales, including eleven leaf species, one Williamsonia sp., and two other fertile and stem organs. The Early Jurassic male ginkgoalean inflorescence Stachyopitys preslii Schenk and its in situ pollen Naturalis

An early Liassic male inflorescence of Stachyopitys preslii with in situ pollen is described from a clay lens in the sandpit Küfner near Pechgraben, Bavaria, Germany. These male inflorescences have been known since the 19th century and are rather common in the early Liassic floras of Bavaria, but in situ pollen was hitherto unknown. Stachyopitys preslii is always found in association with the leaves and the female fructifications of Schmeissneria microstachys. The in situ pollen proved to be monosulcate, a pollen type commonly occurring in the Cycadophyta and Ginkgophyta. This strengthens the possible attribution of the parent plant of S. preslii (Schmeissneria microstachys) to the Ginkgoales.

A study has been made of the receptaculite Tetragonis sulcata d'Eichwald, 1860 in Upper Ordovician erratics from the northern Netherlands. D'Eichwald's original description is reviewed, giving a wider conception of the morphological diversity of receptaculites. Tetragonis sulcata is placed in the family Tetragonaceae Rietschel, 1969 (nomen correctum), together with Lepidolites dickhauti Ulrich, 1879. The aim of this study was to reconstruct the living receptaculite organism by documenting homologies between Tetragonis sulcata and receptaculites described in the literature. Is the Jongmans collection cultural heritage or a scientific collection? Naturalis

Wilhelmus Josephus Jongmans (1878-1957) was a Dutch botanist who became involved in palaeobotany at an early stage in his career. He became head of the department of the geological survey for coal winning in Limburg (‘Geologisch Bureau voor het Mijngebied’). He accumulated the bulk of the fossil plant collection now kept in the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum. A great deal of this collection consists of Carboniferous material gathered during the period of coal exploitation in the south of the Netherlands, but it also reflects the research interests of its collectors and keepers and consequently is a reflection of the state of the art in palaeobotany since approximately 1920. Qasimia gen. nov., an early Marattia-like fern from the Permian of Saudi Arabia Naturalis

The marattialean fern Qasimia schyfsmae (Lemoigne) gen. et comb. nov. is described from the Late Permian plant bed at Unayzah in central Saudi Arabia. Although no organic matter is preserved, impregnation of the compressions by iron minerals at an early stage of diagenesis has partly mineralised the synangia and spores. The impressions in a fine-grained shale preserve epidermal cell outlines, including those of the stomata. Qasimia resembles Marattia closely in its bivalved synangia and in its monolaesurate spores with a warty or spiny ornament. Macrofloral remains from the Lower Cretaceous of the Leiva region (Colombia) Naturalis

Lower Cretaceous plant fossils are described systematically from marine deposits near Villa de Leiva (Boyaca region, Colombia). Specimens originating from the same localities kept at the Florida Museum of Natural History (Gainesville) were included in the systematic description. The plant fossils belong to the Pteridophyta, the Cycadophyta, the Coniferophyta, and to taxa of uncertain affinity which, following previous authors, are referred to the angiosperms. Two new species of Coniferophyta are described, viz. Cupressinocladus hoedemaekeri sp. nov. and Brachyphyllum winklerprinsii sp. nov. Rare conifers from the type area of the Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous, southeast Netherlands) Naturalis

Two conifer twigs from the type area of the Maastrichtian are described as Brachyphyllum sp. 1 and Brachyphyllum sp. 2. They might belong to the Cheirolepidiaceae, Podocarpaceae or Taxodiaceae. Brachyphyllum sp. 1 occurs with the conifers Brachyphyllum patens (?Cheirolepidiaceae) and Elatidopsis cryptomerioides (Taxodiaceae), the seagrass Thalassocharis bosqueti and the ammonite Baculites vertebralis in the upper part of the Kunrade Chalk in the Kunrade area, while Brachyphyllum sp. 2 probably originates from the lower part of this deposit.

Wood-remains from the Lower Pleistocene of Tegelen (The Netherlands) Naturalis

Wood-remains of the Lower Pleistocene type locality of the Tiglian have been described and identified. The resulting flora is compared with Recent European forest-vegetations and a strong affinity with flood plain forests has been established. Also a comparison with flood plain forest vegetations of North America, East Asia and the Pontic area is made. The Tegelen wood-flora can at best be compared with the floras found in N. E. Asia and in the Pontic area. The climatic implications of this comparison and of the floristic composition of the Tegelen wood-flora are discussed.

Composition and palaeogeographic position of the Early Permian Jambi flora from Sumatra Naturalis

A preliminary taxonomic revision of the Early Permian Jambi flora results in a lower number of taxa, a number of new determinations and several new combinations (Dicranophyllum molle (Jongmans & Gothan) comb. nov., Oligocarpia posthumii (Jongmans & Gothan) nov. comb., Callipteridium strictinervis (Jongmans & Gothan) comb. nov.). Cones containing the bicuspidate seeds Tobleria bicuspis are recorded for the first time. The exact stratigraphic position of the Jambi flora is unknown, but brachiopods and fusulinids indicate an Early Permian age. Comparisons with the East Asian Permian floras of the Cathaysian realm indicate that the Jambi palaeoflora can best be compared to a relatively xeric Cathaysian flora, possibly indicative of relatively high...
