H. Milne Edwards's "Histoire Naturelle des Crustacés" (1834-1840) and its dates of publication Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Introduction. — By far the most important and fundamental carcinological publication of the first half of the 19th century unquestionably is Henri Milne Edwards's (1834-1840) "Histoire naturelle des Crustacés", which treated all species of Crustacea known at that time in an exceedingly clear and comprehensive manner. The work was published in three volumes of text and one atlas. The dates of publication of it have never caused any difficulty. It was generally accepted that volume I was published in 1834, volume II in 1837, and volume III in 1840. These dates have never been challenged, and on closer examination indeed prove to be correct. About the date or dates of the atlas authors were vague and usually cited 1834-1840, or 1840, or they cited the atlas...

John Ruskin as Zoologist Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A study is made of John Ruskin's work in the field of zoology. It is demonstrated that Ruskin's early interest in zoology was connected with his study of ornament, whilst his later studies are connected with his Oxford teaching and his social work. Ruskin's interest in zoology concerned groups frequently represented in art (particularly birds and snakes). Of these groups he studied, in a fragmentary way, the artistic morphology, the life-habits, the particular position to art and literature, and the mythological signification. Besides that, his natural history teaching was focussed on the protection of animals and respect for nature.

Frederik Petrus Koumans, 1905-1977, a biography and a tentative list of his biological papers Naturalis
Boeseman, M..
On Wednesday 27 April 1977, my predecessor as a curator of fishes at the Leiden Museum, Dr. F. P. Koumans, after a short illness, rather unexpectedly passed away at the age of 72. Considering his rôle as a staff member of the Museum and the importance of his contributions to science, the publication of a short biographical note and a list of his publications seems an obligation towards his former colleagues, if not a duty for me as his former pupil. Frederik Petrus Koumans was born on 21 January 1905 in the Hague, where he attended elementary and high school. After his high school examination in 1922, he studied biology at the nearby University of Leiden, where he obtained his masters degree in 1927, and his doctorate in 1931. There is no information...

Bruggen, A.C. van.
Willem Vervoort was born on 12 June 1917 in Schiedam. He read biology at Leiden university (19361941, interrupted by active war service) where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1946 under the supervision of Prof. Dr H. Boschma with a thesis entitled 'The Copepoda of the Snellius Expedition I'. In 1941 Dr Vervoort was appointed assistant, later curator of invertebrates at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, where he was in charge of the invertebrates minus arthropods and molluscs. He worked at the museum on hydroids and copepods until 1950, interrupted by two trips to Antarctica where he was cetacean biologist to the national whaling company (1946/1947, 1947/1948). In the period 1950-1959 Dr Vervoort was lecturer in histology/cytology in the zoology...

Who was Jacob Evertsen? Search for the identity of the godfather of some spotted groupers (Pisces: Serranidae: Epinephelinae) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
The vernacular name Jacob Evertsen given by the Dutch to East Indian spotted groupers was that of a sailor of the second Dutch expedition to the East Indies, and not of an admiral as so far generally assumed. The very few data known of the sailor Jacob Evertsen, are discussed.

Bibliografische aantekeningen over Jac. P. Thijsse's Vogeljaar Naturalis

Bibliographical notes on de Folin & Bérillon's Malacological papers concerning "La Region Extrême S.-O. de la France" and related publications by de Folin and Barrois Naturalis
Gittenberger, E.; Kosten, A.P.W.M..
Between 1874 and 1877 the marquis L. de Folin and F. Bérillon published several papers on the non-marine mollusks of the southwesternmost part of France. In this series of papers, for obscure reasons published under three different headings, various new nominal molluscan taxa are introduced. Their correct citing and dating is important therefore. Because these data cannot be found in the literature, we considered it useful to summarize the results of our bibliographical investigations. As a by-product of our studies some notes are given concerning certain papers by De Folin alone and a contribution which is attributable to Barrois. De Folin & Bérillon (1874-1877) published their "Catalogue", "Etudes" and "Contributions" in two journals, which are not...

Attention is drawn to some hitherto overlooked paragraphs on the north-eastern Brazilian fauna hid- den in a historiographic account of Count Johan Maurits' govenorship (1637-1644), published by Caspar van Baerle (Barlaeus) in 1647, a year before the publication of Marcgrave & Piso's famous Historia naturalis Brasiliae and based on the same sources.

Albertus Seba's „Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri...." (1734-1765) and the „Planches de Seba" (1827-1831) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
INTRODUCTION The present note is the result of an investigation into the correct date of publication of the third volume of A. Seba's great work "Locupletissimi rerum naturalium thesauri. ..". In my own studies on Crustacea I accepted the year 1761 as correct, following in this Engelmann (1846) and the title page of the copy of Seba's book that I consulted. Dr. M. Boeseman, ichthyologist of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, pointed out to me that in ichthyological literature the year of publication of this volume is practically always cited as 1758. Also Engel (1937) in his biography of Seba gave this later date. In trying to straighten this question out I obtained the most cordial help from Dr. Boeseman, Prof. Dr. H. Engel, former director of the...
