Host specificity and phylogenetic relationships among Atlantic Ovulidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) 16
Reijnen, B.T.; Hoeksema, B.W.; Gittenberger, E..
Ovulid gastropods and their octocoral hosts were collected along the leeward coast of Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. New molecular data of Caribbean and a single Atlantic species were combined with comparable data of Indo-Pacific Ovulidae and a single East-Pacific species from GenBank. Based on two DNA markers, viz. CO-I and 16S, the phylogenetic relationships among all ovulid species of which these data are available are reconstructed. The provisional results suggest a dichotomy between the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific taxa. Fully grown Simnialena uniplicata closely resembles juvenile Cyphoma gibbosum conchologically. Cymbovula acicularis and C. bahamaensis might be synonyms. The assignments of Caribbean host species for Cyphoma gibbosum, C....

Contrasting responses of two xerophilous land snails to fire and natural reforestation 16
Santos, X.; Bros, V.; Ros, E..
Land-use change is considered the main disturbance in landscapestructure and composition, directly affecting faunal distributionand species richness worldwide. Wildfires and natural reforestation alter habitat structure in terms of vegetation cover and also in soil composition and moisture; these processes hence trigger habitat transformations that act as opposing forces at small spatial scales. We have explored the contrasting effects of wildfires and natural reforestation on two land-snail species of the genus Xerocrassa, which are endemic in the western Mediterranean. Snails were sampled in pine and Holm oak forest, stony bare slopes and burnt sites. Both species followed a similar pattern: they were present in more than 75% of the stony bare slope...

Notes on the Moluccan Megapode Eulipoa wallacei (G.R. Gray, 1860) following the rediscovery of two major nesting grounds 16
Dekker, R.W.R.J.; Argeloo, M.; Jepson, P..
Two nesting grounds of the Moluccan Megapode, Eulipoa wallacei (G.R. Gray, 1860) located on the islands of Haruku and Halmahera, Indonesia, are described. Together they provide nesting opportunities for more than half of the estimated world population of this endangered megapode. Further information is given on six additional nesting grounds. Data are presented on size and origin of the megapode populations using these sites, egg-laying season, behaviour, and measurements of birds and eggs in relation to their breeding strategy of using solar heat for the incubation of their eggs.

Comments on some new occurrences of heteromorph ammonites in the Lower Cretaceous (late Valanginian — early Barremian) of the Eastern Alpine and Western Carpathian systems 16
Vasícek, Z..
New records of heteromorph ammonites from the Silesian Unit of the Outer Western Carpathians (Czech Republic) are represented especially by small pyrite steinkerns with suture lines preserved. A lesser proportion of them belongs to representatives of the subfamily Bochianitidae from the Valanginian. Among the most interesting is Baculina rouyana d’Orbigny. Another group consists primarily of lower Barremian Leptoceratoidinae. In addition to commonly occurring species of Hamulinites and Leptoceratoides, an Eoheteroceras assemblage is often found, represented partially by new elements. Heteromorphs from the Northern Calcareous Alps (Austria) come from marly Hauterivian limestones. Ptychoceras meyrati is present through most of the Hauterivian. Well-dated...

A new record of ‘Achatina’ vassei Germain, 1918 (Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Achatinidae) from Mozambique – an unsolved problem 16
Bruggen, A.C. van.
'Achatina vassei Germain', 1918, of which so far only the holotype is known (figured), is now recorded from Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique (Sofala Province) north of the road Beira-Mtare (Zimbabwe). The systematic position is still unclear because of the lack of anatomical data; this taxon is probably a restricted-range species centred on the plateau of Central Mozambique. A list of the terrestrial molluscs of the ‘Greater Gorongosa Ecosystem’ from the literature and specimens in the Leiden Museum is added; Curvella whytei E.A. Smith, 1899, is recorded as new for Mozambique.

Barros, J.L. de.
During recent years a group of Brazilian malacologists has contributed substantially to our knowledge of Brazilian Bulimulidae. The second author has been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to visit some of these specialists twice and to establish a close cooperation. This paper is the second in our joint series treating several species in greater detail. The first paper in this series is by Breure & Dos Santos Coelho (1976). The genus Babylonia revisited (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Buccinidae) 16
Gittenberger, E.; Goud, J..
Taxonomic and biogeographic data on Babylonia and Zemiropsis, published after the 1981 monograph on Babylonia by Altena & Gittenberger, are summarized and new data are added. Babylonia and Zemiropsis are characterized and considered most closely related genera. Babylonia lani spec. nov. and Babylonia umbilifusca spec. nov. are introduced as new to science. Babylonia leonis Altena & Gittenberger, 1972, described from pliocene-pleistocene deposits, is reported as an extant species. The enigmatic “Babylonia” rosadoi is considered a Zemiropsis species on the basis of both shell morphology and distribution.

Vertigo substriata Jeffreys, faunae neerlandicae nova species, een zoogenaamd glaciaalrelikt 16
Sunier, A.L.J..
Kuijper, W.J..
The molluscs of the brackish waters in the Netherlands (Mollusca) The Netherlands is a river delta rich in brackish waters. The organisms in these waters need to be adapted to extreme conditions, especially large fluctuations in chlorinity. However, several species occur optimally in this habitat. In this paper a review is presented of the molluscs living in brackish waters in the Netherlands. All available data from literature, collections, literature and databanks were compiled for this cause. In The Netherlands a large variety of brackish waters can be found, like lakes, canals, old creeks, shallow pools, lagoons, estuaries and dykes. This paper focusses on the waters on the landside of the dikes. All species found in these waters are treated here....

Darüberhinaus stellte mir Dr. Zilch, Frankfurt a.

Notes on Micractaeon, a monotypic genus of African land snails (Gastropoda Pulmonata: Ferussaciidae?) 16
Bruggen, A.C. van; Winter, A.J. de.
Micractaeon kakamegaensis Verdcourt, 1993 (type loc. Kenya, Kakamega Forest), is a synonym of Pseudopeas koptawelilense Germain, 1934 (type loc. Kenya, Mt. Elgon); the proper name is therefore Micractaeon koptawelilensis (Germain, 1934). New anatomical data are supplied, more or less confirming classification in the family Ferussaciidae. The shell is subject to some considerable variation in size, shape and sculpture. The species appears to be widely distributed in various types of forest in tropical Africa (Ghana, Cameroon, eastern and south-eastern Zaïre, Kenya, Malawi, and eastern Zambia); hypsometrical distribution is generally from c. 950 m to c. 2300 m, although in Ghana it has been collected at altitudes of between < 250 and c. 700 m.

The Netherlands Nudibranchiate Mollusca 16
Engel, H..
In preparing a small Handbook of the Netherlands Opisthobranchiate Mollusca (Fauna van Nederland, Afl. VIII, Sijthoff, Leiden, 1936), in cooperation with Miss Tera van Benthem Jutting, the present author studied, as his part of the work, the Nudibranchia. As some results of his studies might be of more general interest, they are given here. The southern North-Sea is rather poor in animal life and it is always interesting to note, what species can live under the rather bad ecological conditions it affords. The number of species diminishes further as one enters the Waddenzee or (before 1932) the Zuiderzee. Though as a rule the sandy Dutch coasts are not suitable for Nudibranchs, there are found some on the stone-covered dikes and quays, on the wooden...
