INTRODUCTION The first scientific description of the Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis), given by P. A. Ouwens, appeared only as late as 1912. During some time following this event, but little information on the species became available and no specimens were captured. Only in 1926, an American expedition to the island of Komodo, led by W. D. Burden, for the first time succeeded in capturing alive two Komodo Dragons and in transporting these to the U.S.A. Both animals were received at the New York zoological garden on 11 September 1926. One of the specimens, a male, died on 24 November 1926; the other, of unknown sex, died on 19 October 1926 (Jones, 1965: 92). On 14 October 1926, a male Komodo Dragon was received at the Amsterdam zoological garden. It was... |

Our herpetological collections contain only five specimens referable to the genera Bachia and Scolecosaurus, while the genus Bachia is represented in the Amsterdam Zoological Museum by eight specimens. Scanty though this material may be, some of the specimens proved to be of sufficient interest to justify the publication of these notes. At present thirteen species of Bachia 1) are known, viz., the twelve species listed in a key by Burt & Burt (1931, pp. 315-316) and Bachia anomala Roux (1929, p. 31). Perhaps Apatelus bresslaui Amaral (1935) must be referred to Bachia too. Roux (1929), Burt & Burt (1931) and Loveridge (1933) published notes on the variation of several characters, and these authors showed that the variation is greater than had been... |

INTRODUCTION Crinia darlingtoni Loveridge, 1933, was described from a series of four specimens collected by P. J. Darlington at the Queensland National Park, Macpherson Range, Queensland, and distinguished by the rudimentary condition of the first finger and the extremely small first toe. Loveridge noted that some specimens bore a resemblance to C. acutirostris Andersson in colouration but did not discuss the phylogenetic relationships of his new species. For a generic revision Parker (1940) examined a juvenile paratype and on the basis of a similarity in the condition of the prevomer, he associated C. darlingtoni with C. leai Fletcher, C. rosea Harrison and C. laevis (Günther). In the last species he also recognized two sub-species, C. l. laevis and C. l.... |

At the request of Dr K. P. Schmidt, Chicago, I recently examined the types of Psammophis antillensis Schl. This species as originally described was a composite, and it is, therefore, necessary to select a lectotype to restrict the name antillensis to one of the species involved. The difficulty is that Schlegel did not label his types as such, and that in most cases he did not mention how many specimens he actually examined. From the introduction to his Essai we know that Schlegel visited Paris, that the collections of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle were placed at his disposal, and that he was allowed to take the undescribed species with him to Leiden for further studies (Schlegel, 1837, I, p. XXIV). What happened in the case of Psammophis... |

In 1973 the Convention in International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was called to life as to regulate the international wildlife trade, and to prevent species becoming (economically and biologically) extinct. The trade in freshwater turtles and tortoises in Asia is so huge that it threatens the survival of many species. In 2006 and 2007, during three surveys at Chatuchak market in Bangkok, Thailand, we recorded a significant trade in non-native CITES-listed freshwater turtles and tortoises to be used as pets. We documented a total of 688 individuals of 19 species from different regions of the world, many of which are globally threatened with extinction. Most commonly recorded were three species of tortoise from Madagascar... |

The origin of frogs, salamanders and caecilians is controversial. McGowan published an original hypothesis on lissamphibian origins in 2002 (McGowan, 2002, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 135: 1-32), stating that Gymnophiona was nested inside the 'microsaurian' lepospondyls, this clade was the sister-group of a caudate-salientian-albanerpetontid clade, and both were nested inside the dissorophoid temnospondyls. We have investigated McGowan's data matrix and isagree with the scoring of 35% of the cells. All taxa and all but two characters are affected. In some cases, we have a different interpretation about correspondence between morphology and character states, or we delimit states differently (or use information that was unknown in 2002). In... |

The Spanish sand racer (Psammodromus hispanicus) has been recently split into three distinct species: P. hispanicus, P. edwardsianus, and P. occidentalis. Some morphological differences have been reported but there is as yet no description allowing unambiguous identification of the three species. Here, we describe differentiation in body measurements, scalation traits, and colour traits as well as in the degree of sexual dimorphism. Our results show that P. edwardsianus can be easily distinguished by the presence of a supralabial scale below the subocular scale, which is absent in the other two species. Psammodromus hispanicus and P. occidentalis can be distinguished by the number of femoral pores, throat scales and ocelli, and the relative width of the... |

INTRODUCTION The Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie material of Brachyorrhos albus (L., 1758), which had been on loan to Dr. S. B. McDowell, New York, was returned to us with the remark that reg.no. RMNH 48 from Java certainly did not belong to that species. Dr. McDowell suggested it might be an Atractus, and following his suggestion I examined this specimen. It soon became evident that Dr. McDowell had been right and that the specimen did belong to Atractus trilineatus Wagler, a species only known from Trinidad, eastern Venezuela and western Guyana (Hoogmoed, 1979: 275). HISTORY The specimen concerned (RMNH 48) belongs to the oldest part of the collection of the RMNH. It turned out to have been investigated by many ancient authors and it was discovered... |

A new species of toad, related with Bufo calamita Laurenti and B. viridis Laurenti, is described from the southern part of Morocco. Combining the data of the available specimens with literature records it was established that the new species probably ranges from the Sous valley southwards to Cape Bojador in the Spanish Sahara. The species seems to be restricted to semi-arid habitats. Tadpoles which probably belong to this species are described. Keys for the identification of adult toads and for the tadpoles are given. |

The systematic status of the snakes recorded from the area has been reinvestigated, often in the light of new material. Allometric growth is shown to occur in several species and taxonomic errors arising from its previous non-recognition are rectified. The same feature is also used to determine the respective ontogenetic levels of closely allied forms. The fauna of the Sokotra group is shown to have greater relationships with the Palaearctic and Oriental regions than with the Ethiopian and to consist of mainly primitive types; they are assumed to have been isolated in the islands since the mid-Miocene. The mainland fauna, though predominantly Ethiopian, contains a strong northern admixture and this element predominates in the northern coastal plain which... |

Amphibian diversity and distribution patterns in Sinaloa state (north-western Mexico) were assessed from the Global Amphibian Assessment database (GAA-2010). A geographic information system (GIS) was used to evaluate diversity based on distribution maps of 41 species, associated with environmental data. The highest α and γ-diversities were identified in the south-eastern portion of the state, in mountain zones with a warm sub-humid climate, whereas the greatest β-diversity (multiplicative formulation) was aggregated in patches in the western portion of the state in mountains with temperate climates. A cluster analysis and Mantel test showed a strong association of Sorensen’s dissimilarity (additive formulation of β-diversity) with climate and soil moisture... |

X. NOTES ON THE NEWLY DESCRIBED GENUS CACOPHRYNE DAVIS Recently Davis (1935) pointed out that the toad known in literature as Bufo borbonicus (Tschudi) or Nectophryne borbonica (Tschudi) does not belong to either of these genera, and that it even does not belong to the Bufonidae, for the species differs from the true toads (Bufonidae) in two important characteristics, as it lacks Bidder's organs and does not possess testes of an elongated shape. Moreover the pectoral girdle proved to be firmisternal instead of arciferal. A new genus, Cacophryne, in the family Atelopodidae, was erected for this species by Davis, and this author (1935, p. 90) mentions that possibly some other species at present included in the genus Bufo, i.e., Bufo penangensis (Stol.),... |

In this paper we list seven species of caecilians known to occur in Surinam. An eighth species, the aquatic Typhlonectes compressicaudus, is likely to be found in Surinam, but there are no voucher specimens. We report the rediscovery of the rare Rhinatrema bivittatum, now known from four specimens, one each from Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, and Surinam. Microcaecilia taylori, described as a new species from Sipaliwini, is characterized mainly by a complete lack of secondary annuli, a feature which necessitated rediagnosis of the genus Microcaecilia. A Microcaecilia from the Lely Mountains differs from all known specimens of the genus by its larger size. The specimen is either a geographic variant of Microcaecilia unicolor, or it is an undescribed... |
