Modeling of the shrinkage kinetics of coffee berries during drying - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i3.7080 Agronomy

The effects of drying conditions on the shrinkage of Coffea Arabica L., cultivar Catuaí Vermelho, were studied. An exponential model derived from the kinetic model was used to describe the shrinkage kinetics. In addition, an equation was proposed to describe the relationship between the superficial areas and weights of the coffee berries. Coffee berries were dried at temperatures (T) of 35, 45, 55 and 65ºC and at relative humidities (φ) of 25, 35, 45 and 55%, forming 16 different sets of conditions, with an initial moisture content for all conditions of 2.27 dry basis (d.b.), dried until 0.11 d.b. Changes in the product dimensions were measured continuously during drying. Surface area-to-volume ratio values increased with moisture content decrease. The...

Mathematical modeling of the drying process of corn ears - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i4.7079 Agronomy
Corrêa, Paulo Cesar; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Botelho, Fernando Mendes; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Oliveira, Gabriel Henrique Horta; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Goneli, André Luis Duarte; Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados; Resende, Osvaldo; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Campos, Sílvia de Carvalho; Universidade Federal de Viçosa.
The objective of this work was to study and model the drying process of corn ears at different air temperatures. Thermodynamic properties associated with the drying process of this product were also determined. Corn ears with initial moisture content of 0.45 dry basis (kgw kgdm-1) were dried until they reached a final moisture content of 0.12 (kgw kgdm-1) at temperatures of 45, 55 and 65°C. Traditional models used to describe the drying process of several agricultural products were employed to fit the observed data of the drying process of corn ears. The effective diffusion coefficient (Def) was determined by means of an analytical solution of Fick’s second law. It was concluded that the Logarithmic model was the one that best fit the observed data...

The influence of organic matter from swine wastewater on the interaction and transport of alachlor in soil - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v35i3.16374 Agronomy

This study evaluated the effects of total and dissolved organic matter produced from two swine wastewater treatment systems, a biodigester and a manure lagoon, on the adsorption, desorption, and leaching of alachlor (2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide) in soil. It was used the batch equilibrium method to test adsorption and desorption, and the results are presented in Freundlich isotherms. It also used disturbed soil columns to evaluate the miscible displacement of alachlor in soil treated with total and dissolved organic matter. This assay was used to monitor the concentration of alachlor in the leached material, the amount of total organic carbon, and the pH. The addition of swine wastewater promoted greater adsorption and...

Mechanical properties of the rachis from macaw palm bunche Agronomy
Oliveira, Zenil Ricardo Cunha Rodrigues de; Santos, Fábio Lúcio; Valente, Domingos Sarvio Magalhães; Pinto, Francisco de Assis de Carvalho; Velloso, Nara Silveira.
Numerical implementation methods such as the finite element method can be used in machine design to study the dynamic behavior of the plant. Input parameters for using the finite element method should be set based on the geometrical, physical and mechanical system under study. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the mechanical properties of the rachis of macaw palm in the green maturation stage at an age of 180 days and at fruit maturation. The water content was calculated using the oven method of 105 ± 3°C for 24 hours. The modulus of elasticity for the rachis was determined by means of mechanical compression testing. The Poisson's ratios were determined from the results of the longitudinal and transverse deformation of rachis test bodies. The...

Description of the application method in technical and scientific work on insecticides Agronomy
Balan, Marcelo Gonçalves; Saab, Otavio Jorge Grigoli Abi; Ecker, Arney Eduardo do Amaral; Migliorini, Gustavo de Oliveira.
Chemical control is a viable and practically indispensable tool in the control and management of cultivated plant pests, but insufficient detail in documenting the methods used for applying phytosanitary products has been reported in the majority of scientific publications dealing with insecticide application. A survey of 200 scientific studies was conducted to examine how much basic information was provided on the application method. The amount of descriptive detail concerning the insecticide application method was found to be below the minimum requirements. In particular, there was insufficient detail concerning the spray droplet spectrum (no information in 173 studies evaluated – 86.5%), operating pressure (38 studies – 19%), solution concentration (52...
