| ATP-content and adenylate energy charge (AEC) ratios were determined in two polychaete species (<i>Nereis diversicolor</i> and <i>Nephtys</i> sp.), sampled in ten stations along the heavily polluted Western Scheldt estuary (N. Belgium, S. Holland). The samples were taken between 27 December 1982 and 6 January 1983. <i>Nereis diversicolor</i> was also sampled in an unpolluted brackish water pond, and subjected to artificial stress by drying the organisms on filter paper.
