Discolored waters and human diseases by shellfishes were dominant features of summer 1983 in south coast of Brittany. Vilaine Bay, the most damaged area, was successively affected by brown waters in early June, and diarrhetic intoxications by harvested mussels (July and August), just as DPS producing dinoflagellate (D. acuminata ) reached higher water or mussel guts concentrations than years before. Outspreading in the whole south coast of Brittany and possible relation with hydrological or biological parameters are analyzed. |

The author studies the microbial phenomena which occur during the maturation of French anchovies, some from the Basque, the others from the Roussillon coast. There are some differences in relation with the origin of the fishes. On a marine agar, the microflora of the Mediterranean ones is almost constant or in a light diminution while that of the Atlantic ones is climbing during 9 weeks before a decline. On an extremely salted agar and in the both origins the archaebacteria are increasing in number during 5 to 6 weeks and diminishing before. The complete ripening is obtained within 16-17 weeks. The limits of the significance of the microbiological analysis are discussed. |

The genus Pseudoscopelus Lutken, 1892 is easily distinguished from the other Chiasmodontidae by the presence of well-defined rows of photophores. Until 2005, eight species were known. Pseudoscopelus scriptus was the first described by Lutken in 1892, then P. sagamianus by Tanaka in 1908, P. stellatus by Beebe in 1932 and P. altipinnis by Parr in 1933. Later in 1934, Fowler described three new species: P. microps, P. cephalus, and P. obtusifrons. These three species, known from only one specimen each, have not been recorded since. Lastly, an easily distinguishable species, P. scutatus, was discovered by Krefft in 1971. In a recent review, Prokoviev and Kukuev (2005, 2006) confirmed the validity of all species and described a new one P. aphos,... |

Since 1988, the IFREMER Fisheries Resources Laboratory in Boulogne-sur-Mer is carrying out a pluriannual project in the Eastern Channel to estimate, directly and by age groups, the abundance and the recruitment of species of commercial interest. These data are obtained during an annual trawl survey (taking place in October) which gives indications about the fish populations distribution and allows to get biological informations needed for stock assessments. The present study aimed to analyse the distribution and the abundance of whiting (Merlangius merlangus). In the Channel, this species is one of the most exploited by the French small-scale fishery. The results showed that the whiting distribution was mainly restricted to shallow waters in October and... |

To provide updated information on the growth of Crassostrea gigas in Brittany, experimental stations on 8 sites (culture area) were monitored. Biometric measurements (length, width,...), meat composition (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates...), quality, survival and parasitism were observed after 7 months. A descriptive study by principal components analysis was conducted to find the most significative variables explaining the variability and classifying the sites. Six groups of station can be identified by their respective performances that have been screened in detail. An optimal strategy was discussed to establish a most efficient data network in Brittany. The yearly variations will be checked up and their correlations with environmental factors tested... |

Size fractionations in combination with precise oxygen measurements, determinations of bacterial cell numbers and chlorophyll a analyses were used in the Oosterschelde basin and Lake Grevelingen to establish the bacterial contribution to overall pelagic oxygen consumption rates. On computation, 101 and 59% of total respiration could be attributed to bacterial activity in winter in the basin and in the lake, respectively. In summer, the bacterial component of total activity was calculated to amount to 54 and 57% in the basin and in the lake, respectively. Microbial contribution to in situ overall activity may slightly be overestimated by growth of the bacteria observed during incubation of the samples in oxygen in the dark at in situ temperatures. |

The electrophoretic study of sarcoplasmic fraction soluble in water or in low ionic strength solutions can be applied to species identification; in this field isoelectric focusing (IEF) gives excellent results. In this paper thin agarose gels have been used in IEF for the determination of marine species. The preparation of these agarose gels and the running conditions are described. The use of agarose gel in IEF is a relatively new technique, different companies market several different agarose ampholyte systems; these products should be tested to find the most adaptable. |
