ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Martin, A; Maggi, Pierre; Berthome, Jean-paul; Langlade, Aime; Bachere, Evelyne.
Discolored waters and human diseases by shellfishes were dominant features of summer 1983 in south coast of Brittany. Vilaine Bay, the most damaged area, was successively affected by brown waters in early June, and diarrhetic intoxications by harvested mussels (July and August), just as DPS producing dinoflagellate (D. acuminata ) reached higher water or mussel guts concentrations than years before. Outspreading in the whole south coast of Brittany and possible relation with hydrological or biological parameters are analyzed.

Microflore et anchoitage. ArchiMer
Campello, Francois.
The author studies the microbial phenomena which occur during the maturation of French anchovies, some from the Basque, the others from the Roussillon coast. There are some differences in relation with the origin of the fishes. On a marine agar, the microflora of the Mediterranean ones is almost constant or in a light diminution while that of the Atlantic ones is climbing during 9 weeks before a decline. On an extremely salted agar and in the both origins the archaebacteria are increasing in number during 5 to 6 weeks and diminishing before. The complete ripening is obtained within 16-17 weeks. The limits of the significance of the microbiological analysis are discussed.

Morizur, Yvon; Charuau, Anatole.
Some trawlers from Lorient (France) are fishing for Nephrops at the North of 48th parallel. During the last years, the mesh size of their cod-end changed twice. It increased from 45 mm to 60 mm at the end of year 1978 and to 70 mm at the end of year 1979.'. Whereas the change to 60 mm seems to have no immediate- effect on Nephrops landings, the increase from 60 mm to 70 mm results in a loss in Nephrops landings of 30-40 %. That loss in Nephrops landings goes with an increase in some by-catches species as whiting, cod and hake.

Fishing effects on the diversity dynamics of demersal fish communities. Comparative analysis of the role of the interactions between specices in the Bay of Biscay and in the Gulf of Lion (France). ArchiMer
Blanchard, Fabian.
This work deals with the fishing effects on the diversity dynamics of demersal fish communities, focusing on the biotic interactions. Multispecies indices were used in order to characterise the demersal fish community dynamics of the Bay of Biscay and of the Gulf of Lions. These are the diversity indices, the temporal variability of the total biomass and of the slope of the number size spectra and the slope of the species-area curves (spatial segregation). The data were provided by yearly bottom trawl surveys EVHOE, CHALIST and MEDITS carried out in these two areas since 1983 by IFREMER for stock assessment. The differences between areas are related to a fishing index (mean value of the annual landings of demersal fish per surface area). Other areas are...

Plusquellec, A; Beucher, M; Legal, Y.
Sea water and mussels from a natural site (Concarneau - France) have been compared for fecal contamination by enumeration of their fecal Coliform and fecal Streptococci content. Mussels contain a significant concentration of bacteria, although this concentration differs for the two indicators. Enumeration of fecal Streptococci in bivalves leads to a reduction of the variability observed in sea water. Mussels allow a more efficient assessment of Salmonella in the marine environment than sea water itself.

Spitz, J; Quero, Jean-claude; Vayne, Jean-jacques.
The genus Pseudoscopelus Lutken, 1892 is easily distinguished from the other Chiasmodontidae by the presence of well-defined rows of photophores. Until 2005, eight species were known. Pseudoscopelus scriptus was the first described by Lutken in 1892, then P. sagamianus by Tanaka in 1908, P. stellatus by Beebe in 1932 and P. altipinnis by Parr in 1933. Later in 1934, Fowler described three new species: P. microps, P. cephalus, and P. obtusifrons. These three species, known from only one specimen each, have not been recorded since. Lastly, an easily distinguishable species, P. scutatus, was discovered by Krefft in 1971. In a recent review, Prokoviev and Kukuev (2005, 2006) confirmed the validity of all species and described a new one P. aphos,...

ArchiMer
Rodriguez, Carmen; Lopez, Francisco.
The formation of anomalies in the calcification of the shell in the flat oyster Ostrea edulis , is not a recent phenomenon. The authors used spat of oyster from France and Greece cultured in the Arosa Estuary, Galicia, Spain, through the punt or floating park system very spread in the Galician estuary. The calculation of different indices of condition show us that the formation of blisters increases the grade of the shell concavity and it does not affect the meat content of the oyster. The studies of crystallization in the calcareous layers that form the blisters, prove the "calcite", as the only type of crystal and the existence of disorder and disorientiation in the growing of the crystals.

Carpentier, Andre.
Since 1988, the IFREMER Fisheries Resources Laboratory in Boulogne-sur-Mer is carrying out a pluriannual project in the Eastern Channel to estimate, directly and by age groups, the abundance and the recruitment of species of commercial interest. These data are obtained during an annual trawl survey (taking place in October) which gives indications about the fish populations distribution and allows to get biological informations needed for stock assessments. The present study aimed to analyse the distribution and the abundance of whiting (Merlangius merlangus). In the Channel, this species is one of the most exploited by the French small-scale fishery. The results showed that the whiting distribution was mainly restricted to shallow waters in October and...

Lebec, C; Mazurie, Joseph.
To provide updated information on the growth of Crassostrea gigas in Brittany, experimental stations on 8 sites (culture area) were monitored. Biometric measurements (length, width,...), meat composition (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates...), quality, survival and parasitism were observed after 7 months. A descriptive study by principal components analysis was conducted to find the most significative variables explaining the variability and classifying the sites. Six groups of station can be identified by their respective performances that have been screened in detail. An optimal strategy was discussed to establish a most efficient data network in Brittany. The yearly variations will be checked up and their correlations with environmental factors tested...

The use of size fractionation for determining the bacterial contribution to overall pelagic oxygen consumption rates. ArchiMer
Laanbroek, H; Verplanke, J.
Size fractionations in combination with precise oxygen measurements, determinations of bacterial cell numbers and chlorophyll a analyses were used in the Oosterschelde basin and Lake Grevelingen to establish the bacterial contribution to overall pelagic oxygen consumption rates. On computation, 101 and 59% of total respiration could be attributed to bacterial activity in winter in the basin and in the lake, respectively. In summer, the bacterial component of total activity was calculated to amount to 54 and 57% in the basin and in the lake, respectively. Microbial contribution to in situ overall activity may slightly be overestimated by growth of the bacteria observed during incubation of the samples in oxygen in the dark at in situ temperatures.

Biosystematique du complexe Solea vulgaris du golfe du Lion (poissons, teleosteens, soleides). Genetique, morphology et etude meristique. ArchiMer
Quignard, Jean-pierre; Pasteur, Nicole; Shehata, Suzanne.
A study of biochemical genetics morphology demonstrates that the two subspecies Solea vulgaris typica and S. v. aegyptiaca are sympatric and sexually isolated in the Golfe du Lion. These two taxa are therefore distinct species. S. vulgaris appears relatively homogenous genetically as well as morphologically in the Atlanto-Mediterranean area; S. aegyptiac shows some morphological variations but no important genetic differentiation in the different regions of Mediterranean.

Parlier, Emmanuel.
Coastal fish populations settle more or less frequently, at various stages, estuarine systems. Tidal marshes are one of the components of these mosaics of habitats. The first part of this work describes fish assemblages through the utilisation of these systems by fishes analysed in order to propose a revised functional classification of ecological guilds. T h i s new classification is used to compare fish communities of four estuarine systems in the western coast of France: the Mont Saint- Michel Bay, the Saint-Brieuc Bay, the Loire estuary and the Aiguillon Bay. The second part aims at characterizing the nursery function as defined by Beck et al. (2001). Acombinative approach based on gut content analysis, and stable isotope analysis shows that Yo Y s e a...

Morizur, Yvon.
Total mortalities were determined in several Nephrops stocks according to two methods using length distributions with growth parameters : Beverton and holt's Method, end Ssentongo and Larkin's method. We applied these two formulae in conditions which differ from those in which they were established. Therefore validity of methods was certified by simulated length distributions. Apparent- natural mortality values of 0.2-0.3 were obtained from, length distributions of quasi-inexploited stocks. Real mortality differs from apparent mortality in effects of behaviour. Kodels used in Nephrops assessments are discussed.

Durand, Patrick; Landrein, Annie.
The electrophoretic study of sarcoplasmic fraction soluble in water or in low ionic strength solutions can be applied to species identification; in this field isoelectric focusing (IEF) gives excellent results. In this paper thin agarose gels have been used in IEF for the determination of marine species. The preparation of these agarose gels and the running conditions are described. The use of agarose gel in IEF is a relatively new technique, different companies market several different agarose ampholyte systems; these products should be tested to find the most adaptable.
