Strategies for removal of indicator pathogenic bacteria from commercial harvested shellfish ArchiMer
Jones, S; Howell, T; O'Neill, K; Langan, R.
The Great Bay/Piscataqua River Estuary in New Hampshire and Maine has an abundant oyster resource in sewage-contaminated water. The only approved area in the Maine portion of the Estuary is Spinney Creek, where fecal indicator bacteria are present at reduced levels and Vibrio vulnificus is absent. Spinney Creek Oyster Company (SCOC) of Eliot, Maine, operates relay lagoons and a depuration facility for oysters harvested commercially from restricted areas of the Salmon Falls River in Maine. Oysters naturally contaminated with vibrios and fecal indicator bacteria were used to evaluate depuration and relaying as strategies for eliminating these bacteria from shellfish. Oysters and water were analysed for the presence of total and fecal coliforms, V....

ArchiMer
Fontaine, Bernard.
The author describes the interrelations between the gastropod genus Lora and the carngonid shrimps Sabinea . The mollusc lays under the abdomen of berried shrimps: Sabinea sarsi and sometimes S. septemcarinata. The eggs of the mollusc species and of the shrimp have a syncronous growth; at hatching time, young molluscs are fully of the mollusc reduces the egg-number of the shrimp.

Pellerin, M.
Informations gathered in the mangrove of the Fort-De-France bay of Martinique (F.W.I.) showed a decreased physiological condition of Crassostrea rhizophorae in the south part of the bay explained by the presence of zinc and by physico-chemical parameters modified in the wet season, such as decreased salinity and decreased levels of nutrients. Bioaccumulation of zinc, lead and cadmium was highly correlated to sediment contamination. Contamination by pesticides and organochlorides was found mainly in oysters from the North part of the bay, characterized by industrial activities and agricultural inputs.

Uptake and depuration of the opaque and translucent morphotypes Vibrio vulnificus and the effects of oyster passage on virulence ArchiMer
Groubert, T; Oliver, J.
Vibrio vulnificus is an estuarine bacterium which is known to be a significant human pathogen. It occurs in high numbers in oysters and other molluscan shelfish, where it is part of the animals' normal flora. V. vulnificus occurs in two colony morphotypes; the opaque, encapsulated variety is virulent, whereas the translucent, non encapsulated variety is avirulent. Studies were carried out to determine if the opaque and translucent morphotypes were taken up by oysters (Crassostrea virginica) at different rates, and whether UV - assisted depuration proceeded at different rates. Possible interconversion of the opaque and translucent morphotypes was also examined, as was the possibility that the virulence ofVibrio vulnificus would be modified following passage...

ArchiMer
Abgrall, J; Congar, R.
This study highlights the economic interrelations among all boats, focusing on two particular cases, on the one hand the French Channel trawler fleet (1978 to 1980), the Quebec trawler fleet (1974 to 1982) on the other. The present results show the extent of changes in vessel profit or loss productivity and the sacrifice owners and crew have to make in order to survive. Results also show the disparities of situations between the different sorts of vessels within a common bioeconomic environment.

Minet, Jean-pierre.
The systematic position and morphological characters of H.platessoides are presented. The geographical distribution, habitat and seasonal movements of the sp are described. Data on stomach contents and feeding behaviour are presented. Age and growth studies are also carried out and data on sexual maturity and reproduction are given. There are no significant morphological differences between the populations from the southern banks of Newfoundland and the Cap Breton are, however, biological and physiological differences between the 2 populations, especially in the diet, growth rates, spawning and sexual maturity. There are also differences in growth rates and size at 1st sexual maturity, between male and female.

Somniosus bauchotae sp. nov. (Selachii, Squalidae, Scymnorhininae) espece nouvelle de l'Atlantique N.O. ArchiMer
Quero, Jean-claude.
The author describes a new sp of squaloid shark of the gen Somniosus Lesueur, 1818 from the waters of the Bay of Biscay. The new sp S. bauchotae differs from S. microcephalus (Schneider, 1801), S. rostratus (Risso, 1826) and S. pacificus (Bigelow and Schroeder, 1944) by the shape of the 1st dorsal and of the pectorals, by the caudal peduncle with a distinct lateral ridge, by the much larger interspace between the tip of 2nd dorsal and caudal, and also the shape of dermal denticles.

ArchiMer
Moguedet, Gérard.
From a sedimentological point of view, the continental shelf of the French Guyana can be divided in three parts, parallel to the littoral: (1) the coastal zone where a very fluid mud is found; (2) a large band of sands which covers the rest of the continental shelf; (3) the zone of pelagic muds which corresponds to the lower part of the continental slope. The passage between the sands of the shelf and the littoral or pelagic muds is obtained by the intermediary of the muddy sands.
