Sea-ice detection for autonomous underwater vehicles and oceanographic lagrangian platforms by continuous-wave laser polarimetry ArchiMer
Lagunas, Jose; Marec, Claudie; Leymarie, Edouard; Penkerc'H, Christophe; Rehm, Eric; Desaulniers, Pierre; Brousseau, Denis; Larochelle, Patrick; Roy, Gilles; Fournier, Georges; Thibault, Simon; Babin, Marcel.
The use of Lagrangian platforms and of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) in oceanography has increased rapidly over the last decade along with the development of improved biological and chemical sensors. These vehicles provide new spatial and temporal scales for observational studies of the ocean. They offer a broad range of deployment and recovery capabilities that reduce the need of large research vessels. This is especially true for ice-covered Arctic ocean where surface navigation is only possible during the summer period. Moreover, safe underwater navigation in icy waters requires the capability of detecting sea ice on the surface (ice sheets). AUVs navigating in such conditions risk collisions, RF communication shadowing, and being trapped by ice...

High-resolution mapping of large gas emitting mud volcanoes on the Egyptian continental margin (Nile Deep Sea Fan) by AUV surveys ArchiMer
Dupre, Stephanie; Buffet, G.; Mascle, J.; Foucher, Jean-paul; Gauger, S.; Boetius, A.; Marfia, Christian.
Two highly active mud volcanoes located in 990-1,265 m water depths were mapped on the northern Egyptian continental slope during the BIONIL expedition of R/V Meteor in October 2006. High-resolution swath bathymetry and backscatter imagery were acquired with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV)-mounted multibeam echosounder, operating at a frequency of 200 kHz. Data allowed for the construction of similar to 1 m pixel bathymetry and backscatter maps. The newly produced maps provide details of the seabed morphology and texture, and insights into the formation of the two mud volcanoes. They also contain key indicators on the distribution of seepage and its tectonic control. The acquisition of high-resolution seafloor bathymetry and acoustic imagery maps...

Rapport des campagnes TURBIDENT Leg1 (Mai 2018) & Leg2 (Octobre 2018) ArchiMer
Pairaud, Ivane; Fuchs, Rosalie.
This report reviews the data obtained during Leg1 and Leg2 of the TURBIDENT oceanographic campaign (May-October 2018) carried out in the Iles d'Or (Toulon) area to the Banc des Blauquières (Cassis), within the framework of the ANR ASTRID Turbdident. The objective of this campaign was to acquire an innovative data set providing relevant information on the ocean surface layer under the illumination zone of the MIO HF radar, in particular sub-surface current profiles obtained using acoustic Doppler current meters (ADCP) operating in a stabilised manner below the surface from an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) from Ifremer, and temperature profiles obtained using low-cost thermistor lines developed in-house, in addition to more conventional measurements of...
