Phenology, fruit set and dispersal of Cordia multispicata Cham., an important weed shrub of abandoned pastures in eastern Amazonia Rev. Bras. Bot.
Vieira,Ima Célia Guimarães; Silva,José Maria Cardoso da.
ABSTRACT - (Phenology, fruit set and dispersal of Cordia multispicata Cham., an important weed shrub of abandoned pastures in eastern Amazonia). The reproductive ecology of the distylous tropical shrub Cordia multispicata was studied in an abandoned pasture in Paragominas County , Pará state, Brazil. It is a common species in the Amazon basin where it occurs as a weed in open and disturbed habitats. C. multispicata has many flowers per inflorescence (85 ± 12) but 84% abort before fertilization. Flowering occurs throughout the year. Fruits are small, with a red fleshy pericarp (skin-pulp) attractive to birds. Fruit set is lower during the dry season (less than 30%) and higher during the rainy season when there are many visits of insects to the flowers....

Effects of experimental lightgaps and topography on enrichment plantings in a central Amazonian secondary forest Acta Amazonica
BENTOS,Tony Vizcarra; NASCIMENTO,Henrique E. M.; VIZCARRA,Marisângela dos Anjos; WILLIAMSON,G. Bruce.
ABSTRACT Enrichment plantings into secondary forest are an important option in restoring species diversity and ecosystem services. However, little attention has been given to environmental requirements for species performance. This study evaluated the effects of lightgaps and topographic position on the growth and survival of four native tree species (Pouteria caimito, Garcinia macrophylla, Dipteryx odorata and Cynometra bauhiniaefolia) planted into a 26-year old secondary forest originating from abandoned pastures in the central Amazon Basin. Artificial lightgaps and control plots under closed canopy were uniformly distributed on plateaus and bottomlands near water bodies. Seedlings were planted randomly into the plots and monitored for 28 months....

Allelopathic evidence in exotic guava (Psidium guajava L.) BABT
Chapla,Tatiani Elisa; Campos,João Batista.
The allelopathic activity of the leaf aqueous extract of guava (Psidium guajava L.) on seed germination and root growth in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) was studied in an experiment consisting of four replicates with 10 seeds each and extract concentrations of 5, 10, and 20%. Guava allelopathic activity occurred during the germination and growth of lettuce roots at 20% extract concentration, as shown by ANOVA. This result suggested the allelopathic potential of the species. Therefore, the success of P. guajava in invading environments could be partially due to allelopathy. Further studies using other plant parts and field experiments should be conducted.
