BRS 304. A fonte sulfato promoveu maior... |

The aim of this study was to evaluate the rate absorption of radio-labeled chromium oxide (51Cr2O3), used as biological marker in nutrition studies with Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. An experimental diet with approximately 58 µCi of specific activity of the element was encapsulated and fed daily to 35 adult Nile tilapia; a group of 35 fish was used as control feeding on a basal diet. At the beginning of the experiment five fish from each group were randomly selected and blood samples were drawn from control (BC) and experimental fish (BE). Fish were then euthanized by anesthetic overdoses and samples of the liver tissue (LT), renal tissue (RT), stomach without content (S), intestine without content (I), gills tissue (GT), muscle tissue (fillet; MT),... |

At the concentration used in this work (10 ppm), cadmium was efficiently removed from the environment by stationary yeast cells. While exponential phase cells showed low capacity of cadmium absorption, stationary cells removed 97% of the original metal in 24 hours. Total cadmium absorption shown by dry cells was lower than that of fresh ones, although both cells removed 50% of metal during the first hour of treatment. We also verified that only viable cells were capable of absorbing cadmium. Independently of the growth phase, cells showed high tolerance to 10 ppm CdSO4 and about 80% of cells remained viable after 24 hours exposure to cadmium. However, when stationary phase cells were previously dehydrated and then exposed to cadmium, they exhibited poor... |

ABSTRACT Seeds can absorb N from mineral supplementation, thus stimulating seedling development in soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merrill). This study aimed to evaluate the contribution to soybean seedlings of N derived from mineral supplementation in seeds with different nutritional contents. Seeds of the cultivar BMX Potência RR received mineral supplementation enriched with 2.5% excess 15N. The treatments were performed in seeds in two lots, one with high and one with low nutritional content. At 2, 6 and 10 days after sowing on paper towels, the seedlings were collected and separated into cotyledons, roots and shoots. Dry matter production, root length and root volume were assessed. Total N and 15N values were analyzed in the seedling organ tissues. The... |

In European waters, significant economic damages to wooden structures are caused by bivalves molluscs and crustaceans. Treatments like copper-chrome-arsenic mixtures (CCA) were designed to prevent settlement of these wood borer species. However, limited and conflicting evidence regarding the toxicity to non-target organisms are available in the literature. This report aims to provide insights regarding the CCA leachates' toxicity to an important aquaculture species, the blue mussel Mytilus edulis for which much information on normal and stressed physiology is available for purposes of comparisons. The mussels are usually considered as a particularly suitable species for biological monitoring (Smaal and Widdows, 1994). To address the CCA leachate issue, two... |

Subbottom profilers are commonly used to explore the first sediment layers below the seafloor. Recent narrowbeam profilers achieve improved performances in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and resolution. Thus, the potential of these systems for near real-time geoacoustic characterization of sediments is high and is worth being specifically explored. This paper presents several methods to estimate geoacoustic parameters such as the absorption, the reflectivity, and the impedance contrast. These procedures are tested against real data collected with the SBP 120 subbottom profiler during the CALIbration MEthodology for Recognition of the Ocean bottom (CALIMERO) experiment. It is shown that the absorption and impedance contrast estimates are fully... |

Four microalgae species (Rhodomonas salina, Thalassiosira weissflogii, Thalassiosira pseudonana and Pavlova lutheri) were evaluated to estimate their potential as food for Ostrea edulis (L.) reproductive conditioning. Best ingestion and absorption were observed with R. salina (3.44 and 1.59 mg g− 1 h− 1, respectively), followed by T. pseudonana (2.75 and 0.98 mg g− 1 h− 1) and P. lutheri (2.40 and 0.91 mg g− 1 h− 1). Oysters fed T. weissflogii exhibited the lowest ingestion and absorption values (1.40 and 0.68 mg g− 1 h− 1). Proximate composition (proteins and carbohydrates) and lipid content (fatty acids and sterols) analysed in four main tissues (gonad, digestive gland, muscle and gills) also differed significantly with diet. Protein ranged from 355 mg... |
