Community structure of metazoan parasites of silverside, Odontesthes bonariensis (Pisces, Atherinopsidae) from Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Drago,Fabiana B..
The helminth communities of silverside, Odontesthes bonariensis (Valenciennes, 1835), from two Argentinean lagoons were studied and compared at component community and infracommunity levels. Nine helminth species were found: five digeneans (Austrodiplostomum cf. mordax, Ascocotyle (Phagicola) cf. diminuta, Ascocotyle sp., Thometrema bonariensis and Saccocoelioides sp.); two nematodes (Contracaecum sp. and Hysterothylacium sp.); one acanthocephalan (Wolffhugelia matercula) and one cestode (Cangatiella macdonaghi). Odontesthes bonariensis is a new host record for five parasite species. Richness, diversity and number of helminths in silversides from Salada Grande lagoon were higher than in those from Lacombe lagoon. This could be related with lagoon size,...

Neoechinorhynchus pimelodi sp.n. (Eoacanthocephala, Neoechinorhynchidae) parasitizing Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, "mandi-amarelo" (Siluroidei, Pimelodidae) from the basin of the São Francisco river, Três Marias, Minas Gerais, Brazil Zoologia
Brasil-Sato,Marília de Carvalho; Pavanelli,Gilberto Cezar.
Neoechinorhynchus pimelodi sp.n. is described as the first record of Acanthocephala in Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède. 1803, collected in the São Francisco river, Três Marias, Minas Gerais. The new species is distinguished from other of the genus by the three circles of hooks of different sizes, and by the eggs measurements. The hooks measuring 100-1 12 (105), 32-40 (36) and 20-27 (23) in length in the males and 102-142 (129), 34-55 (47) and 27-35 (29) in length in the females for the anterior, middle and posterior circles. The eggs measuring 15-22 (18) in length and 12-15 (14) in width, with concentric layers of texture smooth, enveloping the acanthor.

Ecological and reproductive aspects of Neoechinorhynchus pimelodi Brasil-Sato & Pavanelli (Eoacanthocephala, Neoechinorhynchidae) of Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède (Siluroidei, Pimelodidae) of the São Francisco River, Brazil Zoologia
Brasil-Sato,Marília de C.; Pavanelli,Gilberto C..
Ecological and reproductive aspects of Neoechinorhynchus pimelodi Brasil-Sato & Pavanelli, 1998, in Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, 1803 collected in the São Francisco river during periods of drought (July 1995 and 1996) and floodings (January 1996 and 1997) of this river basin are provided. In tropical regions where the amount of rainfall alters the hydrological regimen of limnological systems water temperature has not had an important role in infections of N. pimelodi in P. maculatus. Prevalence was somewhat higher during drought periods. Intensity of infection varied slightly between collecting periods. Mature male and female acanthocephalans were present in all periods. Females were predominant. Mature females were present in higher numbers...

Brasacanthus sphoeroides gen. n., sp. n. (Acanthocephala, Echinorhynchidae) from a coastal marine fish of Paraná State, Brazil Zoologia
Thatcher,Vernon E..
Brasacanthus sphoeroides gen. n.. sp. n. is described from the marine fish, Sphoeroides greeleyi (Steindachner), taken in Paranaguá Bay, Paraná State, Brazil. The new genus differs from Acanthocephalus Koelreuter, 1771, the nearest genus in the family Echinorhynchidae, by having very flat and variable lemnisci in both sexes and a uterine egg reservoir in the female. The species is characterized by its spherical body form and in having parallel or diagonal testes.

First record of Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae (Eoacantocephala, Neochinorhynchidae) on Colossoma macropomum (Characidae) in a fish farm in Roraima, Brazil Acta Amazonica
PEREIRA,Jeffson Nobre; MOREY,Germán Augusto Murrieta.
ABSTRACT Severe infections by the acanthocephalan Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae were reported in Colossoma macropomum in fish farms in northern Brazil. The occurrence of the parasite is recorded for the first time in the state of Roraima, Brazil, along with its parasite indexes. Fifty C. macropomum from a fish farm were analyzed. We collected a total of 13474 individual parasites. Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae had a prevalence of 100%, and mean intensity and mean abundance of 269.48. Significant positive correlations were observed between fish standard length, weight and relative condition factor and the number of parasites. Our results showed evident loss of body mass in the parasitized fish. Fish farmers in Roraima should be advised to manage the infection...

CARDIA,DANIEL F.F.; BERTINI,REINALDO J.; CAMOSSI,LUCILENE G.; LETIZIO,LUIZ A..
Abstract Abstract: This study presents the oldest record of Acanthocephala parasite eggs in coprolites preliminary assigned to Crocodyliformes, recovered in the region of Santo Anastácio Municipality, Southwestern São Paulo State. For this, a paleoparasitological investigation was carried out on 53 mineralized coprolites (complete or fragmented), with round shape or cylindrical shape of rounded or pointed ends, 0.2 - 3.9 cm in length x 0.1 - 2.4 cm in diameter, 3.7 grams in weight, and absence of food remains. Individual samples of the surface and internal portions of each coprolite were extracted by electric drill, dissociated with Cloridic Acid 10% solution, washed with Distilled Water, and filtered in granulometric screen Mesh / Tyler 325. After...

Recent Studies on Neoechinorhynchus curemai Noronha, 1973 (Acanthocephala: Neoechinorhynchidae), in Prochilodus lineatus Valenciennes, 1836, from Volta Grande Reservoir, MG, Brazil BJB
MARTINS,M. L.; FUJIMOTO,R. Y.; ANDRADE,P. M.; TAVARES-DIAS,M..
The present work described helminth parasites of curimbatá, Prochilodus lineatus Valenciennes, 1836 from Volta Grande Reservoir, MG, Brazil. Eighteen fishes with average 46.7 ± 1.1 cm length and 1,674.8 ± 75.6 g weight were collected. Of the analysed fishes, 15 were parasitized with acanthocephalans in the intestine, showing a prevalence of 83.3%. The helminth was identified as Neoechinorhynchus curemai Noronha, 1973 (Acanthocephala: Neoechinorhynchidae). It differs from other species in dimension of characters and morphology. From the original description of N. curemai, it differs from the biggest dimension of testis, elongated cement gland, nucleated lemnisci, eggs size, larger proboscis hooks length in the middle and in the third circle in males and...
