Release of dissolved amino acids by flagellates and ciliates grazing on bacteria ArchiMer
Ferrier-pages, C; Karner, M; Rassoulzadegan, F.
Release of amino acids was examined in the laboratory in the form of dissolved primary amine (DPA) by two marine planktonic protozoa (the oligotrichous ciliate, Strombidium sulcatum and the aplastidic flagellate Pseudobodo sp.) grazing on bacteria. DPA release rates were high (19-25 x 10(-6) and 1.8-2.3 x 10(-6) mu mol DPA cell(-1) h(-1) for flagellates and ciliates, respectively) during the exponential phase, when the ingestion rates were maximum. Release rates were lower during the other growth phases. The release of DPA accounted for 10 % (flagellates) and 16 % (ciliates) of the total nitrogen ingested. Our data suggest that the release of DPA by protozoa could play an important role in supporting bacterial and consequently autotrophic pico- and...

Free amino-acids in copepod fecal pellets ArchiMer
Poulet, Sa; Harris, Rp; Martin-jezequel, Veronique; Moal, Jeanne; Samain, Jean-francois.
By measuring water soluble extracts of free amino acids (DF AA) in the diets and faecal pellets of copepods using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), it was found that the molar composition of these molecules in the faeces produced depends on the type of food selected and reflects the hydrolysis of food proteins during digestion. On average, four amino acids (ASP, SER, GLY and LEU) together accounted for 63% of total DF AA in the faecal pellets of a variety of copepod species. The diversity of DFAA in copepod faecal pellets was higher than in sea water or in particles and phytoplankton cells ingested by copepods. These first results on DFAA in copepod faecal material indicate the importance of zooplankton faeces in the flux of dissolved nitrogen...

Relationship between sedimentary organic matter and benthic fauna within the Gulf of Lion: synthesis on the identification of new biochemical descriptors of sedimentary organic nutritional value ArchiMer
Gremare, A; Medernach, L; Debovee, F; Amouroux, Jm; Charles, F; Dinet, A; Vetion, G; Albert, P; Colomines, Jc.
The abilities of several biochemical characteristics of sedimentary organic matter to describe quantitative changes in benthic fauna were assessed based on several surveys carried out within the Gulf of Lion during the last decade. Two sets of high frequency samplings were carried out both inshore and offshore, together with an assessment of seasonal variability along a depth gradient, and a synoptic assessment of mesoscale spatial variability. The considered biochemical parameters were: total organic matter, organic carbon, nitrogen, total proteins, available proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, total and available amino acids. The considered faunal parameters were the abundance and the biomass of both meio- and macrofauna. Our results contribute to unravel...
