Biodegradation of wastewater pollutants by activated sludge coimmobilized with Scenedesmus obliquus Agrociencia
Ruiz-Marin,Alejandro; Canedo-Lopez,Yunuen; Campos-Garcia,Silvia del C.; Sabido-Perez,Mirna Y.; Zavala-Loria,José del C..
Wastewater treatment plants produce large quantities of biomass (sludge) that require about one-third of the total investment and plant operation costs for their treatment. With microbial immobilization and coimmobilization with microalgae, it is possible to handle high cell concentration in the column reactor and increase its efficiency. The experimental design consisted in immobilized and coimmobilized S. obliquus with activated sludge in alginate beads cultured under continuous light or photoperiods (12 h/12 h) in artificial wastewater medium to evaluate the growth, nutrients and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) removal. The results showed that the microalgae S. obliquus immobilized and coimmobilized in cultures under continuous light had higher growth...

Temporal variation of bacterial population and response to physical and chemical parameters along a petrochemical industry wastewater treatment plant Anais da ABC (AABC)
ANTUNES,THEMIS C.; BALLARINI,ANA E.; SAND,SUELI VAN DER.
Abstract: The petrochemical industry has played a considerable role in generation and release of waste in the environment. Activated sludge and facultative lagoons are commonly used for domestic and industrial wastewater treatment due to their low-cost and minimal need for operational requirements. Microorganisms present in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) are responsible for most nutrient removal. In this study, microbiological and physicochemical parameters were used to estimate changes in bacterial community in a petrochemical industrial WWTP. The activated sludge was the place with higher heterotrophic bacterial quantification. Denitrifying bacteria was reduced at least 5.3 times throughout all collections samples. We observe a decrease in the total...

The potential of denitrification for the stabilization of activated sludge processes affected by low alkalinity problems BABT
Hoffmann,Heike; Costa,Tatiana Barbosa da; Wolff,Delmira Beatriz; Platzer,Christoph; Costa,Rejane Helena Ribeiro da.
In this study, the problems provoked by nitrification of wastewater with low alkalinity were analyzed in a pilot sequencing batch activated sludge reactor (SBR). Decrease in pH resulted in disappearence of protozoa. De-flocculation of the activated sludge floc started below pH 6.5, resulting in enhanced effluent turbidity and loss of bacteria. Nitrification efficiency was affected below pH 6.2. The denitrification activity was not sufficient to keep up the pH, due to a low C/N ratio of the wastewater. Based on alkalinity and ammonia concentration of the wastewater and the necessary denitrification rate to prevent operational problems, was developed a prognostic diagram. The applicability of this diagram was tested for the SBR with excellent results. The...

Utilisation of respirometry to assess organic matter reduction of effluents from the Camaçari industrial complex (BA, Brazil) BABT
Oliveira,Carla A.; Araújo,Cristiano V. M.; Nascimento,Renato B.; Strotmann,Uwe J.; Silva,Eduardo M. da.
The treatment efficiency of industrial effluents, after biological treatment by activated sludge in aeration tanks (AT), was assessed through the utilisation of respirometry tests at the Cetrel's-wastewater treatment plant (WTP). Samples of the equalised effluent (EE), prior to treatment, and of the treated effluent (TE), after treatment, were analysed. Twenty bioassays batch were carried out to AT (AT-2, AT-3 and AT-4). Each test consisted of: a basic test, a basic test with peptone added, a test using EE and a test using TE. The data showed that there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) in the respiration activity between the aeration tanks. Regarding the specific oxygen uptake rate there was a mean reduction of 70.8% between the...

Influence of effluents from a Wastewater Treatment Plant on nutrient distribution in a coastal creek from southern Brazil BABT
Santos,Isaac Rodrigues; Costa,Ronaldo Cataldo; Freitas,Ubiratan; Fillmann,Gilberto.
The hypothesis that effluents treated through activated sludge process cause changes in nutrient biogeochemistry of receiving water bodies was investigated in Vieira creek, southern Brazil. Dissolved oxygen, suspended matter, and pH did not vary among the sampling stations. Nutrient, biochemical oxygen demand, and conductivity values were significantly higher downstream from the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) effluents. Further downstream, nitrate concentrations were higher due to ammonium nitrification, organic matter remineralization and/or the occurrence of unidentified sources. Per capita nutrient emission factors were estimated to be 0.16 kg P.yr-1 and 4.14 kg N.yr-1. Under pristine conditions, low N:P ratios were observed, which were significantly...

Fate of organochlorine 14C-dicofol in a lab-scale wastewater treatment BJM
Oliveira,Jaime L. M.; Langenbach,Tomaz; Dezotti,Márcia.
The fate of organochlorine 14C-dicofol in activated sludge process was investigated. Results showed that the major part of radioactivity remained adsorbed on biological sludge. Consequently, its final disposal deserves special attention. The small amounts of dicofol, biotransformed or not, which remained in the treated effluent could contaminate receiving bodies.
